In the first video “Mr. Keating's Unorthodox teaching”, the teacher uses a variety of processes and content, in very unconventional ways, to maintain the student’s attention by moving from one activity to the next; while, maintaining focus on the same lesson (359). This was an active learning or hands-on classroom because of the group activities requiring participation. This style of teaching brought the students into the center of the lessons and gave them a different understanding by observing the lesson from a different perspective by using differentiated instruction (368). This brought the whole class as a group together under instruction by the teacher doing whatever it took to bring the class to an understanding of the lesson. In the
Strategic staffing is important for any company. CanGo has several projects already started, with new ones being developed; a good staffing strategy is going to be a key element for the near future. The staff that CanGo has is unproductive, the staff they need is non-existent. The ASRS systems are a good idea, it would free up staff for other areas, but it would also take staff away from already important projects.
e.) Education/ pg.488: is a group’s formal system of teaching knowledge, values, and skills. This video clearly shows how the three children did in school. They wanted to balance between getting an education and working. In one of the beginning scenes of the video, it showed Zulema in a meeting with her advisor. She was asking her what her future plans were after high school. Zulema knew that her situation may not get better. This is a typical situation where an immigrant child who is a part of a child labor would not be able to finish the grade they are in. Some many make it to high school, but nothing beyond that point. They know their place and would not be able to leave their family to carry on without them. The children in the video
The person I choose to share to two videos with and talk to was my mom. Some of the statistics flashed across the screen astonished us. The fact that 43 percent live with basic sanitation was shocking to me. To Americans basic sanitation is something that is expected. If we go into a public restroom and see remnants of another person’s fecal matter we are up hauled and disgusted. To think the almost half the world does not even have a clean toilet. To me, it was a real eye opener.
The video begins with visual representations of a culturally responsive classroom. This includes a print and color-rich environment, learning centers, and clear rules, procedures and protocol. All of these things were present in the classroom, and the teacher clearly excelled at getting her students to understand and follow procedures and protocol. They responded instantly to “attention grabbers,” seating expectations, and lesson instructions. One of my favorite sayings she used was “bottoms up, heads together.” This signified that the students were to move forward in their chairs and meet as a group to discuss. This forces the students to be more involved in the process, rather than sitting back and possibly zoning out. I will definitely
There are so many opportunities and lessons I have been taking away from this observation experience. First, being the importance of structuring a classroom
Use of differentiated instruction and technology to enhance learning outcomes. The teacher used an agenda and timer to maximize the time available for instruction. The teacher used cultural activities and technology to bring in multiple perspectives on the delivery of the content. The teacher also displayed promoting high expectations by repeatedly telling students what she expects of them. The teacher successfully addressed behaviors when they transpired. The management of classroom space and resources effectively for student learning was challenging. Many hurdles can play parts in managing classroom space; such as, arranging student desks with inadequate space. Adequate space, no safety issues, and less behavioral problems provided confirmation of how the teacher managed the space and resources for effective student learning. What if student’s inappropriate behaviors didn’t exist, would productive learning opportunities still be a measured component of the
I observed that the students were very concentrated on following this strategy, and show that they engaged. When the teacher asked them question, they promptly answered based on this strategies. I didn’t hear any voice or noise. They knew what to do.
In the documentary, it is shown repeatedly in each of the classes that teachers are challenging their students, providing opportunities for students to engage in teamwork, and allowing students to be creative. It is mentioned in the documentary that teachers want to create a space for meaningful learning. In a math class, students were working together as a team to design a house. This was a creative way for students
Some of the traits the video described as good critical thinking skills were asking questions, seeking new solutions, being curious, and admitting to lack of knowledge and understanding. Critical thinking is about having skepticism, examining assumptions, challenging reason and uncovering biases. My favorite point was questioning sources, even if it seems valid, it is important for the critical thinker to uncover the truth for themselves rather than just believe in the words of another, no matter how prestige their background maybe.
She was faced with the challenge of teaching a wide range of learner pathways while striving to maximize the learning for all her students grades first through eighth. While what my grandmother faced over eighty years ago is an obvious exaggeration in differentiation; the reality is that each class room in our schools is a microcosm of that environment. Each student learns through different pathways and it is the role of each teacher to maximize their learning potential by differentiating their instructional practices. Hence, the teachers of my school must strive to connect students and academic content through a responsive instructional practice that is reflective of the needs of their students (Tomlinson, C., Brimijoin, K., & Narvaez, L.,
Turks Moors and Englishmen during the age of discovery, by Nabil Matar, presents the complex interactions between Muslims and Englishmen. To examine these interactions, Nabil Matar uses a variety of resources such as memoirs of captives, Arabic Chronicles, North African history, and the writings of Englishmen whom were living in Morocco and Egypt. Majority of these resources depict the negative conceptions of Native Americans that were implied on the Turks and Moors by the Englishmen. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Englishmen were portraying the Native Americans as homosexuals, vile, and atrocious people. This negative perception made them believe that it was their moral duty to conquer and civilize these people. In order to conquer and rule over the Muslims in North Africa and Middle East, they adopted the same strategy. Matar is able to show the shifting attitude and attributes of the English in dehumanizing the once dominant Muslims of North Africa and Levant. Matar considers the importance of the English-Muslim-American triangle was in setting the platform for colonialism and racism through the writings and practices that were produced during the English Renaissance.
Hitler told the German people what they wanted to hear--that someone was going to save them from the economic disaster of the Weimar Republic and the Versailles Treaty. Through propaganda and a plethora of lies, he managed to oust Hindenburg from power and install "his" people into the Reichstag, who eventually gave him full power to rule indefinitely as he wished. “it is everyone duty to reflect on what happened. Everybody must know, or remember, that when Hitler and Mussolini spoke in public, they were believed, applauded, admired, adored like gods. They were "charismatic leaders" ; they possessed a secret power of seduction that did not proceed from the soundness of things they said but from the suggestive way in which they said them, from
Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.
With knowledge gained from previous experience, I knew that the students I would be teaching were comfortable with a variety of learning methods, but work more effectively when a practical or group task is set. I shall therefore tailor my resources to promote this type of learning within my teaching group.
Effective differentiated instruction reflects where the students currently are in their educational stage and not where a teacher wishes them to be. This step is important; placing students either too high or too low in the instruction can be adverse to the teacher’s goal of helping all students. Developing lesson strategies for students that are too demanding may have a negative effect on performance and reinforce negative emotions concerning learning. Likewise, developing lesson strategies that do not challenge students to perform at their best can also have a negative effect. Some students that are not engaged by a teacher's instruction are left adrift waiting for new or more stimulating material. Engaging students in the learning strategy is the key ingredient in producing active learners.
