Avatar and Sociological Perspective Sociology is the scientific study of social behavior, its origins, development, organization, and institutions. This was created by C. Wright Mills. The sociological perspectives are about human behavior and their connections to society as a whole. Lots of books, TV shows, and movies, can be related to sociological perspective. A movie that I think demonstrates the sociological perspectives is Avatar. The first sociological perspective is symbolic internationalism. This is the use of symbols to connect things in everyday life. People often attach meanings to symbols. An example of this would be how humans interpret hand shakes. The conflict theory focuses on the different conflicts that are in our society. This theory is often linked to Karl Marx, who was a sociologist who believed in “survival of the fittest”. An example of this would the racism seen in modern day society. It is usually one side against another. Avatar is about a paraplegic marine, named Jake, that must choose between his real life, and the distant world of Pandora. While in Pandora he quickly falls in love with one of the female aliens. The military wants to mine the land for precious metal, and they use Jake to gather intel. While Jake is starting to bond with the native tribe, his colonel gets impatient and starts the extermination of Pandora. This leaves Jake to either take his commands, or fight for Pandora. In Avatar there is obvious evidence of the conflict theory. Conflict theory is the conflicts that we see in societies. The people of Pandora have very different cultural beliefs than human, which lead to the high tension between the two. There are also very different religions on Pandora than there are on Earth. Avatar demonstrated racism, with the aliens being the minority, and the humans acting as the “bad guys”. This film demonstrates the conflict between man vs nature.
