Hordy wanted Motown to be the “sound of young America,” so he instructed his artists to focus on universal things, such as loss and romance. He made songwriters use spiritual songs for inspiration so they had a sense in what he wanted; it allowed records to attract to both, black and white, audiences. Bill Barol noted, “Motown was instantly recognizable on a car radio or hi-fi: it was sweet, soulful, polished but emotional. And always, without fail, there was the beat” (Barol).
