This case study was to done to theorize the effective ness on two motor therapy methods MIT and TCM for children with CAS. It looked at the influence of both MIT and TCM had on children with speech and sound production as well as sequencing abilities. this study follows a little girl who's 4;7 years old as she gets diagnosed with CAS. This study applies two motor intervention methods MIT and TCM. The first treatment has several phases which starts off with a baseline period, treatment free period, second treatment, and follow up. these treatments consisted of 6 weeks each except for the follow up which consisted of 12 weeks. the 6 week periods were composed of 18 sessions which were 30 minutes long the choosing for this procedure was done by
I spoke with Mr. Naranjo many times since the last reporting period regarding scheduling of occupational therapy and also the MRI. Once the MRI and x-ray were done he declined going back to Dr. Branch for a follow-up appointment on 1/31/8. He has requested to see his primary care doctor’s office.
The claimant had a physical therapy evaluation on 10/23/2017. It was noted that the claimant had complaints of right shoulder pain after he lifted a tire. He heard and felt a pop on his shoulder. He did have an immediate pain and continued to work. He reported that the pain had decreased and only had minimal discomfort with reaching movements or laying on his shoulder. Objective findings showed a normal active range of motion of the shoulder. There was tenderness in the right distal supraspinatus tendon attachment. He was diagnosed with a right supraspinatus tendonitis.
As part of my Master's in Occupational Therapy (OT), I have been tasked with presenting a community profile experiencing occupational injustice in order to establish their occupational needs through an interactive poster and this written project brief. The community identified is middle-aged Irish men living the London borough of Ealing. This brief will communicate a critical analysis and justification for using occupational therapy as an agent for change with this particular community in mind. A variety of sociocultural factors will also be explored, which are negatively impacting the health and well-being of this community. Occupational justice (OJ) can be defined as "the right of every individual to be able to meet basic needs and to have equal opportunities and life chances to reach toward her or his potential but specific to the individual's engagement in diverse and meaningful occupation."
Fine motor skills refer to the ‘small muscles’ in the hands. Proper development of these muscles is crucial for children to succeed academically in writing and self help skills. According to the National Childcare Accreditation Council (NCAC), “Fine motor skills form an important foundation for the acquisition of many other skills, including literacy, numeracy, self-help and the ability to perform many everyday tasks” (2008). Children start to develop motor skills from birth, and the ways in which children’s muscles develop will later affect their motor function. Caretakers often look for the typical milestones that infants develop; however, infants acquire development at different rates benefiting child growth. From birth through the early grades (preschool to second grade) children are constantly using their fine motor skills to eat, dress themselves, and in social settings such as school. These skills link to infancy development and are factors in knowing how well children will succeed. The following sub-topics address fine motor development and the importance of occupational therapy interventions:
To whom it concerns: Gavin has been receiving therapy services since he was 9 months old. His progress with physical and occupational therapy has been consistent and appropriate based on his diagnosis. Of course, cerebral palsy is a vast and differing disease, but Gavin has made functional gains that have exceeded my expectations. His first year of life was rough. He had a stage 4 brain hemorrhage, and bilateral pneumothoraces.
A physical therapist comes to see you about a 60-year-old female patient recovering from a stroke. She needs information about mobility training, and best practices in using walking aids (such as walkers or canes) versus leg braces (orthotics) to stabilize ankle and leg strength so the patient can learn how to walk again.
When an individual suffers an injury to one side or limb of the body, it forces the other side to work harder to compensate for the trauma. Typically when such injury occurs, the individual stops using the affected limb as much and relies more on the non-affected limb . This limits the degree of improvement in function of the affected limb and can lead to long term disability. CIM therapy uses this concept by improvements in neuroplasticity of one limb by eliminating the movement of another. Overtime, this will lead to the limb that is used most frequently to have improved dexterity and function; in this case the limb affected by stroke (Taub, 1993). The subjects for this study were post-stroke patients and an unaffected limb was restricted with a sling for 90% of the day for two weeks with an allocated 6 hours of therapy per week where they would perform different activities with the non-sling arm. Effectiveness was measured by the speed and precision of movement and compared to the Wolf Motor Function Test. The patients indicated that after the intervention, they found that they were using the effected arm more on a daily basis and they had an increased functional use of the limb as well (Taub, 1993). After a 1 year follow-up, statistically significant differences were shown in all measured categories thus indicating the long term effectiveness of treatment. This research is significant because it shows that autonomous motor learning occurs when the body is forced to compensate for injury. In stroke patients, limbs associated with the affected portion of the brain maintain functional ability reduction. If the subject is forced to utilize this affected limb to a greater extent, their functional ability will improve. This treatment is also beneficial because it does not require expensive equipment or the administration of pharmacological drugs. A meta analysis of 30 randomized control trials
Physical therapy has come a long way in the last couple of decades, literally transforming the way pain, functional limitations and recovery from surgery is treated. But just as with any other healthcare provider, it’s the people behind the front door - and their treatment philosophy - which makes the critical difference in the patient experience.
The role of an occupational therapist in an acute care setting is stabilising the patients’ medical status and improve their functional abilities and safety to prevent any physical or cognitive complications. Occupational therapy has a crucial role in reducing hospital readmissions through early mobilisation, restoring functions, preventing any further decline via conducting functional and cognitive assessments and coordinating the discharge planning (Rogers et al., 2016). One of the cognitive assessments that were used in the acute hospital is the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) which was designed in 1996 as a brief cognitive screening tool to detect mild-moderate cognitive impairment. It Assesses different cognitive domains including
After analyzing the potential solutions, it is highly recommended to the city council that the absolute best solution is to create a rehabilitation clinic. As stated before, this clinic will provide controlled doses of heroin, partnered with an education course on the drug, and supply clean needles for drug use to prevent the spread of disease amongst users. The courses provided by the clinic will serve as one way to do away with the stigma given to those addicted to heroin and in turn, draw more people to the clinic for rehabilitation. As stated before, only 1% of the 8.9% of americans that use drugs attempt to enter recovery. To de-stigmatize heroin use and increase this percentage, the clinic will also serve as a community center. It will
Those students are always in for a long road of speech therapy as well as, problems with reading. I am interested in new research in the area because these students are typically of average intelligence but struggle in school immensely because of their disorder. According to the webinar on Childhood Apraxia of Speech, CAS is defined as a neurological childhood speech sound disorder in which the precision and consistency of movements underlying speech are impaired. The main features of the disorder consist of inconsistent errors lengthened, disrupted coarticulatory transitions, and inappropriate prosody. Motor performance is the generalization of learned behaviors while motor learning is the retention or generalization of learned behaviors. Motor learning is the problem that children with CAS encounter. Phonological awareness is important for students with CAS because they have difficulty with reading and spelling. The training of sounds can be done while also training speech sound production. A new therapy technique for CAS is using ultrasound biofeedback to establish a motor skill at the syllable or word level. The benefits of ultrasound are that the student can visually see the elevation of the tongue or retraction on hard to form sounds such as /r/. The disadvantage is that most clinicians do not have access to ultrasound at a reasonable cost to
1.What is physical therapy? Physical therapy is difficult sometimes it just depends on which one you would like to do. There are many different types of Physical Therapy. There's Orthopedic Therapy, Pediatric Therapy, Wound Care therapy, Cardiopulmonary Therapy , Sports Therapy and many more. Ever since I was a little kid,I loved working or helping elderly people there tons of fun once you get to know them. My mom has worked in nursing homes since I was born she would take me and my brother to work all the time and I would ask people if they needed help because it was fun. I knew I wanted to do something to help the elderly get better or help them feel like they are at home.I choose this career because I love working with people especially elderly people. So far I think this is a good career and it's meant for me.
“I reined my horse to the precipitous brink of a black and lurid tarn that lay in an unruffled luster by the dwelling, and gazed down--but with a shudder even more thrilling than before--upon the remodelled and inverted images of the grey sedge, and the ghastly tree-stems, and the vacant and eye-like windows” (Poe). In the exposition of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the narrator travels to the house of his boyhood friend, Roderick Usher, and in an attempt to rectify the rise of negative emotions, gazes at a small lake, at the reflection of the eerie house surrounded by dead trees. Like the narrator, who uses unorthodox methods to obtain a clearer image,
Culturally Relevant Education was created to reach out to students and to focus on educational needs. However, it has served well with higher education. It has become a benefit for students while gaining successful knowledge. Different higher education classes and programs are becoming more diverse. This encourages the professors to develop better teaching strategies and methods that are more effective with student learning. This specific pedagogy is helping our educators prepare for student engagement since diversity is becoming a big deal. Culturally relevant pedagogy and multicultural education must be more than a feel-good or obligatory addition to teacher preparation (Lynn, 2014, para.4). The main goal for educators is simply to
Nursing and physical therapy deal with a lot of helping people recover from incidents that might of have happened to them or even give them the knowledge to help them prevent from that incident to happen again. It could've have happened during an athletic sport or even just trying to recover from a big surgery. I have been in one of these situation before. I had to go to physical therapy because of a dislocation during my football game. Ever since I recovered from my incident something just clicked in my mind and all I thought about was helping people. What better way to help people with injuries is to help them recover from them. My reasons why you should accept me into your University is because I am a hard worker, I take my learning seriously, and I am always on time.
