Poverty, in a very basic sense, is the state of inability to purchase necessary and desired items. However, poverty is much more complex than this single definition (Kirst-Ashman, 2010). Poverty can also be characterized in terms of relativity, that is in comparison to the living standards of the majority in a society. Here in the U.S. the government calculates a poverty line to define an income level that families and individuals must live under to be considered impoverished (Giddens, Duneier, Appelbaum, Carr, 2009). I would also define poverty as the need for programs and benefits to acquire necessities and in terms of the physical, emotional, and psychological effects it creates.
Hey Marquitta, I really enjoyed reading your post. I agree with you when you say that poverty is looked upon as the lowest part of life because it is. Society today is so caught up on their lives, and how they can get ahead, that they forget about the forgotten. The forgotten could be that neighbor who needs food, to the homeless man you see every day on your way to work, or that side of town that is living in poverty. I love how you state that Mike experience showed what it truly means to rely on God, and that is so true. Most of the time, people only rely on God doing the bad times, but we should always rely on him doing the good, and the bad times.
Poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing and shelter. However poverty is more than not just having money. In addition to a lack of money, poverty is about not being able to participate in recreational activities; Not being able to send children on a day trip with classmates or to a birthday party, and not being able to pay for medications in times of illness. The poorest people will also have less access to health, education and other vital services. Problems of hunger, malnutrition and disease afflict the poorest in society. The poorest are also typically marginalized from society and have little representation or voice in public and political debates, making it even harder to escape poverty. Poverty is a direct threat to society and equal rights in America.
World poverty is a complex global issue that varies depending on where you live. Many Americans in recent years acquiring the needs for shelter, food, and clothing is becoming more difficult to obtain the necessities of survival. Unless there is a cultural and behavioral change in our society regarding world poverty, poverty rates will continue to rise. Poverty is affecting thousands of people in the United States; this impact is changing the quality of life for families. These effects on families can be described in four dimensions. First, defining poverty and understanding the poverty rates. Secondly, opportunities are limited (inequality) for wealth, income, and education, creating poverty. Thirdly, evaluate the causes of poverty through one theoretical perspective. Finally, providing ideas for solutions and ways on changing political policies to reduce or end poverty in the United States.
When poverty is pervasive in an area, it affects everyone in that area. Poverty-stricken people often feel hopeless and believe that their situations will never improve. It is our duty to ensure that changes do take place for these individuals. The condition of poverty does not have to be a permanent one. No one should have to go to bed hungry because of poverty. No one should be denied adequate medical care because of poverty. No one should have to be homeless or live in poor conditions because of poverty. Poverty affects every society in which it exists. Because of this reality, it is vital to explore the solutions that will led to the end of poverty. It is then vital to put those solutions into action so that this horrible condition can be ended as soon as possible. This resolution will only lead to positive results for our entire world’s

One can easily identify the fact that poverty is generally considered as one among the most serious problems in human life. But the mainstream society provides less importance to this serious problem because human life did undergo transformation from empathy to disinterestedness. The western nations are comparatively safe from poverty and related issues, but the third-world nations are under the threat of the same. The problems related to global poverty is unimaginable because it forces human beings to do anything, just for survival. Still, world nations, especially the developed nations, can play the most important role in alleviating poverty from the world. End poverty by 2015. This is the historic promise 189 world leaders made at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 when they signed onto the Millennium Declaration and agreed to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are an eight-point road map with measurable targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world's poorest people. World leaders have agreed to achieve the MDGs by 2015.

In our world, there are currently 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty. These individuals manage to live on the equivalent of what you can purchase in the United States for $1.25. Imagine what can be bought for $1.25 in an average city; perhaps a single soda, a small coffee, half of a gallon of gas, or a single hot dog from a corner. There is a misconception that one can purchase more with the same amount of money in an impoverished country than in the United States. In reality, this number has been adjusted for purchasing power. This means that no matter where one is in the world, $1.25 is sufficient for an individual to be able to make two simple meals.
