Hey Marquitta, I really enjoyed reading your post. I agree with you when you say that poverty is looked upon as the lowest part of life because it is. Society today is so caught up on their lives, and how they can get ahead, that they forget about the forgotten. The forgotten could be that neighbor who needs food, to the homeless man you see every day on your way to work, or that side of town that is living in poverty. I love how you state that Mike experience showed what it truly means to rely on God, and that is so true. Most of the time, people only rely on God doing the bad times, but we should always rely on him doing the good, and the bad times.
The sociological perspective that is employed in the article “Rethinking American Poverty” by Mark R. Rank is Conflict Theory. The conflict perspective views society as comprised of various groups and interests competing for power and resources. Unlike other perspective, conflict theorists focus more on the negative side of the society. This perspective is used in this article because the author wanted to show the reasons why America has the highest rate of impoverishment even though America is the wealthiest country in the world.
According to the Census Bureau 25.6 percent of White Center residence live in poverty, which is greater than the national average. A leading cause of poverty is not having access to higher education. I believe this is a problem because children are the ones affected most by poverty. According to the Census Bureau, 42.4 percent of children in White Center under the age of 5 and 49% of 16 to 17 year olds live in poverty. The families that face the most poverty are single female households with no husband present, at 51.3 percent. Unemployment is a leading cause of poverty. The unemployment rate at White Center, WA 26% higher than the national average. I believe this is a problem that needs to be addressed because housing prices in the Seattle
Living in America, citizens should be well aware of the poverty issues that strike the country everyday. With the poverty rates increasing, Americans are pleading the government for aid in providing food and shelter for their families. In “Poverty in America: Why Can’t We End It,” author Peter Edelman, asserts that poverty can be fixed if the people have interest to do so. He includes statistics and reasons that explain the rise of poverty in America and possible solutions to the problem of poverty. Edelman stated that although the numbers of poverty have declined, there are still 15 million more people who are poor today. The government has also taken action to decrease the numbers of citizens in need of aid and keep 40 million people out of poverty by giving: Social Security, food stamps, cash assistance and programs. The author explains that even though there are still individuals who need aid, the numbers would have been double without government assistance. Edelman
In an article written by Angus Deaton, he discusses the issues behind poverty and why it is persistent in the United States. In the beginning of his article, he presents data from the World Bank which states that 3.2 million out of 769 million of the world's poorest people are living in the United States and are living off of less than $1.90 a day as of 2013 (Deaton). Some of the arguments he mentions that may contribute to the United States high poverty rate include where our poverty line is set, the quality of our necessities, and our government aid.

Poverty has always been with us from beggars outside the gates of Jerusalem to the mentally ill homeless woman in the park. America is known for our huge difference in culture and class. This is due partly to the dynamics behind the political decisions of this country. The president himself admits that America is more unequal than it’s been since the great depression and many of his own supporters say he has failed. America now has, by many standards, the lowest social mobility of all of the high-end countries, meaning that a child born into poverty is likely to grow up as a poor adult. This is surprising for a country that not only prides itself as being a middle class society, but as the society where anyone can make it and where
America is said to be one of the greatest countries in the world. Advanced technology, thriving agriculture, the so-called land of opportunities all obtainable in our beautiful America. So why then do we still have people going hungry every night? Why does such a disparity exist between a person who has an abundance of food and routinely discards food that is perfectly edible and one who digs for those same scraps in trash bins? At times, these people are living within a few miles of each other.
Americans associate poverty as a negative thing, and find themselves working in many ways to decrease and eliminate poverty. However,The Poverty Elimination Act will only help those in poverty, who earn a paycheck. In fact, the bill is very likely to hurt those in poverty rather than help them. The bill eliminates Entitlement programs such as, welfare programs, which are funded by the government, and in return gives people who are in poverty and earning a scheduled paycheck, negative income tax. The bill leaves out 5.5% registered unemployed citizens and many more unregistered citizens who cannot find a job or is physically and/or mentally incapable of working without access to food or shelter. Again, this bill only affects the working class
Poverty, the state of being extremely poor, exists all over America! There are several different types of poverty, and the causes of poverty. Most people think of poverty as just somebody who is homeless and has no job, somebody who has no money to support the basic needs of life, and wears ragged clothing and lives under a bridge. What people don’t know is there are people living in poverty that have jobs and make money but live so poorly that they are categorized with people that live in absolute poverty.
Many reforms in the UnitedStates have been passed to help fight against the “War on Poverty”; but it has not been effective in eradicating poverty in the U.S. There are about 46 million people who are living in impoverished conditions and poverty continues to be a social issue in this country (Heritage Foundation, 2011) In the beginning, our country was formed under the belief that “this land is the land of opportunity and if we worked hard enough the American Dream can be gained” (Schwarz, 1997). People immigrate to this country today in hopes of becoming rich so they could gain a better life. In spite of coming to this country for a better life, many are faced with the lack of skills and money to succeed. In the end, most will end
Whatever happened to the idea of “women and children first”? This concept has been slowly diminishing throughout the years. In today’s society, poverty can be seen in the faces of women and children across the globe. The overwhelming majority of the poor consists of women and children. As of 2013, one in seven women live in poverty (Robbins and Morrison 2014: 1). The poverty of women and children is a global problem, but it is also a problem that hits home. Poverty exists in our hometowns and neighborhoods across the United States. This problem is not just in low-income countries like much of Africa or the third world countries we see on commercials. It is also prevalent in high-income countries like our own. Poverty may have a women’s face,
As a young adult in 2017, I wonder how the United States will advance in the next twenty years, fifty years, or when I leave the Earth two hundred years from now. America has developed tremendously in the last century. For instance, numerous diseases and infections have been eradicated. There are nearly three hundred twenty-five million people in the United States today with nearly eighty-five percent of Americans having access to the internet. However, with these advancements, my generation will have deal with America’s dilemma of the distribution of wealth in this country.
Poverty in Developing and Less Developed Countries The world includes less developed countries and developing countries. Less developed countries are countries considered to be poor and often contain many people who are in absolute poverty. Developing countries are countries like India, which are gaining in wealth. There are two types of poverty within the world.
The issue of poverty in the United States seems to lie on the grounds of race education and family structure. As expected I found that educational levels paralleled poverty levels. Unexpected , research was found to prove that race did in fact play a substantial role in poverty. Family structure along with other influential factors either locked an individual into poverty or provided a means for escape from the continuing cycle. Other factors contributing to poverty was the location of homes or neighborhoods and the accessibility to better paying jobs.
The 2015 Statistical Analysis Poverty Level Data report shows in the United States, there was an increase in which families’ are able to provide food per person within their household. After the devastating financial and economic crisis in 2008, families have been in financial detriment for years trying to maintain consistency in providing food, support, and shelter. Not until the government 2015 report, there were clear evidence of a sufficient rise in food surplus in low income families since 2008. According to the governmental statistical report, 14% of households were suffering from food deficiency. In other words, 17.5 million households, approximate one out of every seven homes could not provide nourishment on a regular basis. This estimate is down from the last statistical data recorded in 2011 at 14.9%.
