Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist and first hand witness of mistreatment of African Americans from the mid-1950s until April 4, 1968 when he was assassinated. He was a black man who grew up during a time of segregation and injustice. King Jr. came from a loving and structured home in which his father was an influential role model and a had a big impact on his future professions. Religion was also a large part of his life and was one of the biggest influences for his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. In this contextual analysis I will be summarizing the historical context of King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech” and how it impacted his social standing and life's work. I will be exploring how Martin Luther King Jr.’s upbringing set the stage for his civil rights activism involvement and allowed him to become one of the most famous African Americans in the twentieth century.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15 , 1929 and died on April 4, 1968. He was born Michael Luther King Jr. but decided to change his name to Martin. Both Martin Luther’s grandfather and father were pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Martin Luther carried on the tradition and served as pastor from 1960-1968 (Nobel Prize, 1). Most people tend to associate MLK as standing for African American rights, but I don’t exactly agree with this. He was so much more than that. His entire philosophy stands on not just the foundation that African Americans are equal or segregation is wrong, it stands on love and acceptance. This is a lesson he taught to everyone in America and countries around the world. Love is a lesson every race can learn. This is why I believe Martin Luther King Jr is the most influential person in history.

King is also known for his two powerful works of writings that include his most famous nineteen-sixty three speech, “I Have A Dream”, and his letter that he written from a Birmingham Jail. He is also, out of all of the most powerful leaders in history, the only leader that isn’t a president of a country that has his own national holiday that celebrates is legacy across the United States of America. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a caring and passionate leader and symbol for change, provided inspiration to encourage the integration of the American society, with the inequality for the colored people. To fully appreciate MLK’s legacy, one has to understand his importance during the American Civil Rights Movement. The American Civil War was growing, which could have very likely led to the fall of the strongest nation in the world.

MLK was an important activist during the civil rights movement. He is most known for his non violent protest and his speeches. Most people don't really know that he had much about his speeches they usually only know one of them but he actually delivered 450 speeches a year.

Since January 20, 1986, Martin Luther king has received his own holiday, which is called Martin Luther king day. He is the only African American to be commemorated in this way. Now in days people have looked up to him as a great person and many young children look up after him. He has been through the ups and down but he only focused on going up. Most people known him for his “ I Have a Dream”

Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent his entire life trying to better the lives of the African-American people. He is considered an iconic symbol of social justice and one of the greatest American Civil Rights leaders of the 1960s. All of the things that he is known for all started with his childhood. At a young age he was taught that god created all persons of equal worth and that everyone should be treated with dignity and with respect. He saw injustice and segregation at a young age, later in life Martin Luther King Jr. sought for the equality and human rights for all Americans.

Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C on August 28, 1963. The speech is one in which has gained much recognition over the years and virtually won Dr. King the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent approach towards racism. Mahatma Gandhi was one of King’s prominent inspirations for his nonviolent movement. Gandhi, decades before Dr. King, practiced non-violence acts and civil disobedience. The will and strength that Gandhi possessed while advocating for peace and non-violence during the terrible events that had taken place in India moved Dr. King to find the path he had to take during his own strides to create a better America, primarily for African Americans. King, worked with a few civil rights and religious groups who helped organized the March on Washington. This was for jobs, and freedoms. This was to help shed the light on African Americans injustices. Around 1964, The Civil Rights Act was passed. Martin Luther King Jr. was most famous for his speech, “I Have a Dream” his speech was called for peace and equality that many would consider a masterpiece. On April 4, 1968 King was assassinated. King will always be remembered for his speeches. On the third Monday during the month of January is a U.S. holiday to honor him. King, had a vision of changing the world in a positive way.

The Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King The Civil Rights movement is still identified by people across the world with Dr Martin Luther King. His day of birth is remarked with a national holiday in the United States and there are many historic sites dedicated to MLK across the nation. His funeral in Atlanta on 9th April 1968 was attended by political leaders from around the world and later in 1977 King was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom which stated that MLK was “the conscience on his generation” who…”saw the power of love could bring down segregation”.
