Tim Burton is known for directing movies that pertain to dark, gothic, eccentric and quirky fantasy. His newest 2016 movie, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is filled with fun, unusual characters who work well together. Each one is eccentric in their own way and their quality adds to the suspense and thrill part of the fantasy. I myself compare it to Harry Potter. Both main characters discovered a hidden world beneath the one in which we live. Harry Potter found witches and wizards while Jacob found the world of peculiars. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is an adaptation of the novel by Ransom Rigg which was published in 2011 and titled the same as the movie. It is an eerie fantasy about a teenage boy who set out to discover the truth in the strange bedtime stories that his grandfather told him as a child. The movie presents itself as an engrossing and well-paced mystery. It is very quick to find its feet and pulls the viewer in from the very beginning. There are many twists and turns at every corner. It is definitely a movie that allows you to experience the excitement of uncovering the mystery at the same rate as the main character does. Jacob …show more content…
He also meets the children: Emma, who is lighter than air and must wear lead shoes to keep her grounded; Fiona, who has the ability to make plants; Horace, who is able to see the future through his dreams; Claire with a big vicious looking mouth behind her head; The twins who have the ability to turn things to stone; Browyn, the super strong girl; Milliard, who is invisible; Olive who starts fires so must constantly wear gloves; and my favorite Enoch, who is capable of bringing things to life. Jacob instantly recognizes them all from his grandfather’s stories and pictures. He is curious about how his grandfather knew them and begins questioning them
Jacob met Miss Peregrine finally! He learns that she is a ymbryme, which means that she can transform herself into a bird and manipulate time to create a safe place for her and her peculiar children. I feel like this book is getting weirder by the second. I really am not into the mythical kind of things in some books, but I still feel like it has a good plot and a good storyline and theme. Ransom Riggs continues to impress me by his writing.

Jacob’s roles in the book are shown through the use of symbols, posture, and facial expression. One role is that he is being protective over Emma. He has his hand in front of her, like he is trying to keep her safe. In Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Jacob say that his “grandfather had trampled her poor, pining heart, and the wound was still raw, even these many years later. [He] thought of putting [his] arm around her” (Riggs 233). He doesn’t just want to protect Emma from the monsters but he also wants to protect her feelings. In the tableau Jacob shows he is very focused. As he faces Dr. Golan he said that he
His family lived on an island in the late 1900’s they weren’t just normal after all. They had powers, Jacob still didn’t believe his grandpa then one night he went to go visit his grandpa with one of his close friends. They got to the house and Jacobs grandma has been killed by some animal of some sort. His grandpa told him about how he could see the monsters and he isn’t safe
His acute stress disorder from the incident keeps the words constantly on his mind, and when he goes to help his family finally clean out his grandpa's house so it can be sold, his aunt Susie finds a book, The Selected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson with Jacob's name written in it, saying it's for him. She gives him the book for his sixteenth birthday, shortly after she found it. As Jacob holds the book in
Overall I found the movie to be quite interesting and exciting at times but a bit slow in others. The story itself was very clear to me and didn’t cause any confusion. It had a good flow also, just as you were on the verge of falling into boredom with a scene they switched it up on you to keep you
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs, is a story full of suspense and mysteries that are unexplained and is a story about a boy named Jacob who had seen his Grandfather die and took special therapy for it that lead him to a house on the island that was filled with Peculiar Children. Here he fell in love with a peculiar child named Emma. He also saved the children from a dangerous wight, and a horrific hollow. Through relationships, symbols, and characters, the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children tableau shows the viewer the dangerous, confusing, and mysteriousness of the story as a whole.
Jacob believes “loving your mom is mandatory”, because she is the one who raised you, but that doesn’t always mean she’s true family (63). His grandfather was his only real family until he met the orphans, but he only truly recognized it after they risked their lives to save the ymbrynes. During their fight to get Ms. Peregrine back, Millard was shot, but the orphans were unable to let themselves leave him behind. Jacob asked before they ran, “You up for this?”, and without hesitation Emma replied “Absolutely” (317). However, because of his wounds, Bronwyn stayed to care for him as the others took off.
Jacob used to think that he was normal until he found his grandfather was killed by a Hollowgast. Once he found out his grandfather was killed by something unusual, he knew that he wasn’t normal anymore.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, however, I did have some small issues with the film. The movie was entertaining with a fun plot line and quality
Humans would consider the Peculiar children as freaks, and will not accept them for who they are. Miss Peregrine is really caring
As the New York Times review of the movie put it, “the movie is a hodgepodge of borrowings and half-cooked ideas flung together into a feverishly edited jet-setting exercise in purposeless intensity.” The movie does its job of being a spy thriller with plenty of twists, turns, and intense action sequences. However, it struggles to obtain a lasting impact through the bigger picture ideas it pushes that end up being nothing more than interesting dialogue to the average
Supernatural is a key topic in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Without the paranormal this book would be completely different because the topic is what builds the story. There are many themes in this novel that are clearly shown. However, a major theme in the novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, is supernatural which is evident through the characters of Barron, The Hollows, and Miss Peregrine. Barron’s character displays the supernatural in a significant way.
The pictures in the book “Miss peregrine's home for peculiar children” shows how they affect the story and represent the children and his grandpa shows him the pictures of the children when he was a child. This is a part of the story because the pictures would be used as evidence they are real and were with his grandpa during world war II.
