On the night of his grandfather’s death, Jacob learned that his bedtime stories were more than just fairy tales. With the help of a few nightmares, Jacob was able to travel beyond his expectations, even though he doubted himself along the way. In Ransom Riggs’ novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, we learn the importance of the Portman’s gift through Lucifer’s Fall, Jacob’s identity, and a family’s love.
The tale of Lucifer and his army is one of the most well-known stories of rebellion in the physical and spiritual worlds. As the story went, they didn’t agree with God’s ways, and their rebellion caused them to suffer His wrath. Eventually, they were sent out of heaven and shunned of the Lord’s presence, creating what we now call demons/ devils. A similar tale happened in this peculiar world. However, as a fictional story, things were a little different, starting with the “Ymbrynes…[who] create temporal loops in which peculiar folk can live indefinitely”(151). Their resemblance in the book is very close to God: a “motherly being” who guards her children against rebels like the devils, or hollowgast. Jacob believes “loving your mom is mandatory”, because she is the one who raised you, but that doesn’t always mean she’s true family (63). His grandfather was his only real family until he met the orphans, but he only truly recognized it after they risked their lives to save the ymbrynes. During their fight to get Ms. Peregrine back, Millard was shot, but the orphans were unable to let themselves leave him behind. Jacob asked before they ran, “You up for this?”, and without hesitation Emma replied “Absolutely” (317). However, because of his wounds, Bronwyn stayed to care for him as the others took off.
