On the night of his grandfather’s death, Jacob learned that his bedtime stories were more than just fairy tales. With the help of a few nightmares, Jacob was able to travel beyond his expectations, even though he doubted himself along the way. In Ransom Riggs’ novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, we learn the importance of the Portman’s gift through Lucifer’s Fall, Jacob’s identity, and a family’s love.
The tale of Lucifer and his army is one of the most well-known stories of rebellion in the physical and spiritual worlds. As the story went, they didn’t agree with God’s ways, and their rebellion caused them to suffer His wrath. Eventually, they were sent out of heaven and shunned of the Lord’s presence, creating what we now call demons/ devils. A similar tale happened in this peculiar world. However, as a fictional story, things were a little different, starting with the “Ymbrynes…[who] create temporal loops in which peculiar folk can live indefinitely”(151). Their resemblance in the book is very close to God: a “motherly being” who guards her children against rebels like the devils, or hollowgast. This group of “Disaffected peculiars...believed

Jacob believes “loving your mom is mandatory”, because she is the one who raised you, but that doesn’t always mean she’s true family (63). His grandfather was his only real family until he met the orphans, but he only truly recognized it after they risked their lives to save the ymbrynes. During their fight to get Ms. Peregrine back, Millard was shot, but the orphans were unable to let themselves leave him behind. Jacob asked before they ran, “You up for this?”, and without hesitation Emma replied “Absolutely” (317). However, because of his wounds, Bronwyn stayed to care for him as the others took off. Their trust in each other is not only what kept them alive, but also
Jacob’s father was an extremely talented carpenter whose skills allowed him many privileges similar to those of a white man. He was allowed to work at his own trade as well as manage his own affairs with the condition that he pay two hundred dollars a year to his mistress and supporting himself. He wished to pay for his children with his earnings and tried many times, however, he was never successful. She also had a brother that was two years younger than her that she adored. While she loved both her father and younger brother, she had a special bond with her mother and maternal grandmother. She had a loving, nurturing, and supportive relationship with the both of them. While she knew she was a slave, she was shielded from the reality that she and

Tim Burton is a very famous director that has many exceptional works. Some of his greatest include: Beetlejuice, The Nightmare before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie’s Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, (most all of them have Johnny Depp in them). There is a lot of talk going on right now about Tim Burton’s new movie, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”. Tim Burton is an incredible director with award winning films, so what makes this one any different? Burton’s newest movie is having quite the battle on Twitter. There has been an outrage because of the all-white cast in the movie. Everyone acting in the movie is white, except Samuel L. Jackson. Many people have been tweeting about how wrong Burton was for being so discriminating
1. What is the NIBIN? NIBIN is the National Integrated Ballistic Identification Network that was created by the FBI and the ATF in 1999.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is a very thought provoking read throughout. However, one line in particular really made me think. Our main character Jacob is talking to the museum curator Martin Pagett, when the latter of the two says, "Though I imagine we're killing ourselves right now in all manner of ways that'll seem insane to people in the future." (p. 94) This statement rang really, really true.
This sends Jacob off on a journey, just off the coast of Wale in the United Kingdom, where he discovers the ravages of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Jacob then examines the hallways and bedrooms of the home only to find out that the kids who once lived there were not just strange they were peculiar. After finding out that they are alive, Jacob comes to realize what
Gothic Elements Gothic literature has been around for centuries and is still around today. The elements of gothic literature has still the same concept but some switched up or added to the list of gothic elements. People get really worked up or really into these stories to find the truth or even hidden truth behind everything. The three gothic elements I am going to be talking about are death, revenge, and mystery.
To Begin, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a prime example of a mystery novel because " the story focuses on an investigator or investigate team. Mysteries are often written as a series, following the investigator through several cases" (Saricks 198). Jacob has been thinking of the ways to visit the abandoned house and finally decided to go and found some interesting finds. When Jacob got to the mysterious house he examined the home "I went room to room, examining their contents like an archeologist... In modest library, the creep of moisture had bowled the selves into crooked smiles.
Hiding in plain sight, belittled for their differences, and ridiculed for trying to be normal, the peculiar children are outcasts of society. In the present, we see these peculiarities as gifts. In the 19th century, however, these gifts are seen as nothing more than unfortunate curses. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children is about an adolescent boy named Jacob whose grandfather died in a rather obscure way. This book revolves around Jacob’s grieving process as he searches for answers about his grandpa’s death. While traveling to his grandfather’s childhood home, Jacob finds a little more than he anticipates during his expedition. In this journal I will be evaluating, questioning and predicting.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney is a good example of contemporary realistic fiction. The content of the book was presented honestly and the story exposes personal and social values central to our culture while at the same time revealing how overt expression of those values may have changed. The story allows readers to draw personal conclusions from the evidence and I feel the author took into consideration that today’s young readers are in the process of growing toward adult sophistication. The language and the syntax reveal the background and the nature of characters and situations. The story is about a young boy and his best friend and the troubles they encounter growing up.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a wonderful book. Jacob Portman, the main character, receives a frantic call from his grandfather when he is at work. Jacob thinks his grandfather did not take his medication and continues working. When he finished, he went to see his grandfather. What he sees is horrifying.
It sometimes can be hard to tell the difference between nightmares and reality. Most of the time it is fake, but sometimes it can be real. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is about a teenage boy trying to learn if his grandfather’s stories of the past were true or made-up. Jacob is scarred when he finds his grandfather attacked in the woods behind his house at night; he is even more terrified when he looks up and sees a monster. He goes to the island his grandfather was an orphan on, and he searches for clues of Grandpa Portman’s mysterious past. Throughout this journal, I will be questioning, evaluating, and visualizing.
The children are known as peculiar so this means that their powers are what they’re identified and defined by. In their world, the more different you are the better. Trust plays a big role also, Jacob really trusts his grandfather when he passes away. His grandfathers last words were to go to an Island and Jacob did just what he told him to do. Also, the children and Miss Peregrine had to learn to trust Jacob when he first arrived to the home. A girl named Emma didn’t trust Jacob at first, but thats when love came in to play. It turned out Emma dated Jacobs grandfather a long time ago and she got her heart broken by him. Emma ends up opening up to Jacob and the two fall in
In the book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Jacob (the main character) loses his grandfather to “monsters” which were people who were in the Nazi. Jacob’s grandfather’s last words were explaining things about his childhood for Jacob to go and see. He was saying things about who ran the orphan house and where it was located. Jacob did not understand what he was
