Most women, are extremely apprehensive of doing things alone, whether it be walking down the street or going to a public restroom. From a young age, women have been taught to use the buddy system, in which they always make certain they have a friend with them when doing anything. As these women get older the buddy system becomes imprinted in their minds, and they begin to understand why this is such a requirement. The world is afflicted with people, more commonly men, who when they see a female alone, they see her as a vulnerable object, waiting to be taken advantage of. This has made the sexual assault of women a very common occurrence in society.
The Office On Violence Against Women defines sexual assault as “any type of sexual contact or

The main notion a feminist has is that women are equal to men. Heather Milkiewicz, who writes about her concerns on gender issues, states that, “A widespread feminist movement aimed at achieving equality could be the key to achieving mutual respect within and amongst the sexes” (80). By Milkiewicz saying that she implies that women should get the equal rights and equal respect that men receive, which is ultimately common sense, and a feminist movement could be a great way of doing so. If men and society as a whole can see women for what they are, equals, it could ultimately lessen the sexual assault of women, and in the long run end it. Feminism is a great thing, that has been and will continue to be a very progressive and positive part of society. However, feminism is not making the progress that needs to be made against sexual assault. In today’s time, as it was in the past, feminism is met with a lot of negativity and backlash. This has led to feminism itself not being taken serious, leading to it being mocked and joked about. Another downfall could be that similar to a great deal of social movements, it may not last forever, and could lead to the brief pausing of sexual assault, instead of stopping it altogether. After being around for so many years if feminism had made more and better advances in the problem discussed here, it could be a great solution. However, …show more content…
For women the world can be a scary place to live in. They solely rely on the trust and faith in other people to somewhat keep them safe, whether it be a friend using the buddy system or trusting strangers to not take advantage of them. Feminism has helped with combating this crime, but the progress has not been what would necessarily be hoped for. Unfortunately, the more in-depth studies and psychiatric evaluations of what makes someone become a sexual predator is something that would take time and funding. However, these studies and evaluations could be the best step in the right direction, eliminating the cause of the main problem. The main goal is that someday, women of all walks of life, can do a simple task alone without the fear and constant paranoia that a predator could be standing around any
4.) The term feminism means the support of women rights to have equality of both male and females and the social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. I agree that women should have equal opportunities to men. I think equality is a positive thing for society. We should all be respected and treated equal regardless if you're male of female. Feminism is a positive thing in my opinion.
Frustratingly, these days, some people still treat sexual assault as an “okay” thing, making comments such as “she was asking for it” and that she was “equally responsible” for the situation. This is exactly the sort of mindset that is contributing to the startling statistics today.
“Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behaviour that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape.” (Unknown, 2016)
Sexual assault is defined as any sexual activity involving a person who does not or cannot (due to alcohol, drugs, or some sort of incapacitation) consent. Women are overwhelmingly the victims of sexual assaults, while men are almost always the perpetrators. National reviews in the United States assess that one in six women has
What is sexual assault? According to the United States Department of Justice it is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.
One in five women and one in seventy-one men will be raped in their lifetime. This type of statistic is nauseating. Senator Sanders states in his article “Man-and-Woman”, “Many women seem to be walking a tightrope now. Their qualities of love, openness, and gentleness were too deeply enmeshed with qualities of dependency, subservience, and masochism.” Within this article, sexual abuse and gender normalities are the big topics. Some men see women as an object or a toy that they can play with. However, women are needed so much more than just to fill the desires of a man. Another problem that not only grown women, but young girls face everyday is the event of cat calling. The Huffington Post’s Joan Marie states, “The first time I was catcalled, I was ten, at a family friend’s barbeque in a swimsuit, It was a drunk dad, who thought he was funny.” The woman in this article explains that she still remembers every inch of her body feeling hot with shame as everyone at the party looked at her. Women are blamed for these types of incidents. The man should have been the one who was ashamed, as a father of a child close to her age. Women continuously blame themselves for the traumatizing things that are said and done to them. Furthermore, there needs to be more support for women and help them to understand that they have a right to their body and it is not something to be ashamed
In America, 1 out of 6 women fall victim to rape at some point in their lives—completed or not (“Victims of Sexual Violence” 1). However, this is only one form of sexual assault that women are forced to face. Groping and other non-consensual, sexual acts are also examples of sexual assault (“Sexual Assault” 1).. Many perpetrators of sexual assault roam free, practically unaffected and likely to commit another similar act, while the woman could feel the effects of this event for her entire life. This problem affects women from around the globe—and it’s time that we put an end to it, because if we don’t, who will? If boys were to be taught how and how not to treat women in their early years, sexual assault would not be as prevalent, thus, women, including us, would not have to worry as much about enduring this kind of torment.
What does it mean to be a Feminist? Does it automatically mean you hate men or does it mean you're an activist for women's rights? Contrary to popular belief, feminism is not about establishing a superior gender. It is about fighting for equality and destroying the social, cultural and historical norms set upon women throughout the world. The Twenty-first century has brought change and growth to female empowerment. Although, in many parts of the world women are given the same rights as men, they are still treated and viewed inferior to men. G.I. Jane perfectly illustrates the struggle women have gone through, even when given “identical” opportunities as men.
Women engage in all forms of criminal activity (Mallicoat, 2012) which includes sexual offenses. However in our society they are less likely to be labeled as criminals compared to men and even more unlikely to become sexual predators. With only about 0.5% of sexual predators (Kemshall, 2004) being women, the public concern of these perpetrators is low. Due to the fact that there are such low levels of women sexual predators that are reported, identified, and prosecuted, this does not necessarily mean that these incidents should be ignored or barely mentioned. Unfortunately very few cases are addressed or reported. There is the matter of gender stereotypes that also come into play, which limit the overall identification of
Feminism is a living word. There can never truly be a one set definition for the word as the term has often shifted meanings to correspond to the time period. Feminists fight for the rights that men have under the United States Constitution and to have the right to not be discriminated against. Any action against any woman, intentional or not, goes against the principles that many women and men stand for.
When considering women’s most feared types of victimisation when alone on the streets—sexual assault and murder, (State Government of Victoria 2015), it is statistically more likely that these things will happen in an individual 's place of residence; 55% of Australian murders and 60% of reported sexual assaults in 2011 occurred in the victim’s home, with only 16% and 7% occurring on the streets, respectively. (Australian Institute of Criminology 2014a). In addition, assault on the street in 2011 was nearly three times higher in male victims than females, with only 8% of all assaults against women happening on the street, compared with 22% of for men. Of course there are risks involved with being alone in certain places at certain times, and it is a matter of basic common sense regarding safety, however the concept of ‘stranger danger’ is not statistically what needs to be feared: it is the people we know that are more likely to be a risk. (Australian Institute of Criminology
Sexual assault involuntary sexual act in which a person is physically forced to engage against their will, or any non-consensual sexual touching of a person. Sexual assault is a form of sexual violence, and it includes rape, groping, forced kissing, child sexual abuse, or the torture of the person in a sexual manner. This can
Feminism has not changed today, but its focus has changed. Many women today have good education and employment opportunities just like men, as the early feminist fought for them. Now, after getting all these, men are now discriminating them and at times abusing them in order to undermine their hard work and potentiality. Men are doing all they can to undermine the success women have been able to acquired, however, today’s feminism is struggling to protect women and girls from domestic violence, sexual harassment, and rape as well as discrimination.
Using (Koss and Achilles (2008) definition of sexual abuse/rape as an unwanted act of oral, vaginal, or anal penetration committed through the use of force, threat of force, or when incapacitated, ( James and Gilliland, 2017, p. 242).
To admit or to label oneself as a feminist is to accept a whirlwind of judgment from those around you. It is without a doubt that the word “Feminism” or “Feminist” turns heads, and not necessarily for the right reasons. Many have resorted to mocking, disagreeing, and/or hating Feminism without even having a good grasp of what it is. The stigmas that feminists face are that they are radical, extremist, liberal, lesbians who hate men, refuse to shave and enjoy burning bras (Lee).Conversely, feminists are principally advocates for social justice and equality as well as aim for the establishment of equally divided power between the sexes. It is obvious that many are unaware of and uneducated on the misogynistic injustices plaguing our world and the toxic environment we all live in- both women and men. Feminism is a positive concept that works to eliminate injustices between both sexes and to establish the value of women, thus should be treated as such a concept instead of being a forbidden idea.
