Reflection, a small and minuscule word in the English language that can do so much. Many reflect every day, some subconsciously, others knowingly. However, the fact is that every individual reflects in some way, shape, or form. One may ask, ¨What is the definition of reflection? The meaning?¨ This question is not simply answered. Every individual may have a slightly varied definition of the word. Some may think of it as looking at the past and creating goals. Others may see it as serious thought or consideration. Personally, I describe reflection as the act of looking back, to the past, on specific events and making judgments on those instances. As I approach the end of my Middle School career and advance further towards High School, reflection …show more content…
In this essay, three previously completed writing projects will be analyzed, dissected, and reflected upon. The documents and the overarching reflection will depict how I have grown and improved as a writer throughout my Middle School career, and how I can improve in the future.
As a student advances throughout his or her education, their literature and writing skills drastically advance and improve. In my case, accuracy, figurative language and proficient use of transition words have been areas of improvement and strength in my writing. Throughout eighth grade, I have created three literary works that highlight my strengths and improvements. These three literary works are Meaningful Word Essay (8th grade), Persuasive Essay, Gun Control (8th grade), and Personal Narrative (8th grade). In these documents, my writing strengths and past improvements are apparent. One of which, the use of figurative language is a focal point. In the personal narrative, I utilized onomatopoeia to engage a reader and improve the narrative. The onomatopoeia reads, “BUZZZZZZ-BUZZZZZZ-BUZZZZZZ.”

Three areas of weakness in my writing include the use of redundant information, frequent use of passive voice, and lack of being concise and straight to the point. The document titled Personal Narrative depicts a use of passive voice. In this document passive voice is apparent more than once and therefore, shows a weakness that needs to be corrected in the future. I plan to begin to use less passive voice and substantially more active voice in order to better engage a reader and strengthen subsequent papers. This will better my writing as a whole. Additionally, my past literary works illustrate a weakness in being concise. In Persuasive Essay, Gun Control this is apparent. In this work, there are 5 pages full of information. This makes for a bulky, not concise, and not straight to the point piece of literature. As this bulk of information illustrates, my writing in the past has been relatively not concise. In the future, I plan to spend significantly more time on my writing pieces. This will allow me to create shorter, more detailed, and stronger writing pieces. Thus, allowing me to become a better writer in the future. Lastly, a weakness of mine pertaining to writing is including redundant information. In Persuasive Essay, Gun Control this can be seen. In this particular essay, there is one paragraph with two separate quotes. One of which is three and one half lines long. As this illustrates,
Reflection is an everyday process and is very personal matter. Jasper (2003) suggests that reflection is one of the key ways in which we can learn from our experiences. Reflective practice can be defined as process of making sense of events, situations and actions that occur in the workplace (Oelofsen, 2012).
After analyzing many of my written works, I highlighted my writing weaknesses along with notable strengths. Evident in my earlier works, my vocabulary was more basic and was not as powerful unlike my more recent essays. Seeking to improve, I started utilizing words I learned during the year
I 've always liked writing. Even before I knew how to write I would make up stories and pretend to write them down. Each year in high school I 've written a multitude of essays on varying topics. I have selected three of these writings from each of my years in high school to examine as part of this rhetorical analysis of my writing history. As I 've grown older, my writing style has changed and I 've learned more about the world and developed my own personal writing voice more and more.
What is reflection? Reflection is defined by Wilkinson (1996) as an active process whereby the professional gains an understanding of how historical, social, cultural, cognitive and personal experiences have contributed to professional knowledge and practice.
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
For project three, the objective was to create a multimodal composition about my writing process. Throughout the poster, I talked about how my writing has changed as well as how it has stayed the same since I began English 101. I also spoke on the struggles I went through with writing in high school. Through my poster, I was able to convey how a deeper understanding of the writing process in high school can help mediate these struggles and better prepare one for their intro Writing class in college.
While attending writing class, I learned about the 4 steps in writing, bases for revising, organizing, and connecting specific information, and I also learned about the different types of essays such as descriptive, narrative, process, cause and effect and argumentative essay. I have been a student at Milwaukee Area Technical College for 1 semester, and over the course of my enrollment I have grown and learned more that I knew prior to attending this writing course. Participating in this writing class has taught me so much more than stuff about literature and language, it has taught me another way of expressing myself. I have learned here how to write and express myself, how to think for myself, and how to find the answers to the things that I don 't know. Most importantly I have learned how important technique, outlines and organization are. My goal in this paper is to inform writers about how my writing skills have improved.
ffer and Rubenfeld (2000) define reflection as “ contemplation upon a subject, especially one’s assumptions and thinking for the purposes of deeper understanding and self-evaluation.”
Now that I have completed the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth course Crafting the Essay, I feel I have tremendously grown as a writer. Even after submitting the first assignment, I looked back at a position paper I wrote for school that I received an A+ on, yet I saw several flaws I wished I had changed.
Way before marijuana was ever used as a popular recreational intoxicant, it was used as a widespread industrial product. Originally brought over to America by British settlers, marijuana hemp was prized for its versatility. It was also used to make a lot of things like, paper, rope, and cloth. In fact, it has been established that both George Washington was not only the father of the United States and a cannabis plantation owners, but also a user of the plant for relaxation and merriment (Schwartz, 2008). There are way more cons than pro’s.
Robert R. , in his poem “The Following Are Some of the Feelings That Most Will Never Know”, explains his experience in the Iraq War and how he is affected by it emotionally and mentally. Robert mentions how the traumatizing events he went through in Iraq, are now many years later still causing him pain and suffering: “ The war is over for me/ I don't understand why I panic or break out into sweats/ or fits of anger” ( Robert 4-6). During day to day life , he is often reminded of the terrors he experienced in the Iraq War, and exemplifies symptoms such as fear and anxiety. These symptoms not only affect him, but also his how he acts towards his family. Robert describes it as “ dissociation”, due to the fact that he feels different and disconnected
Too much sugar and body fat can place you at a higher risk for AD. Blood vessels can become restricted due to stroke or from health conditions, such as obesity and diabetes. Metabolomics study by Dumas et al suggested that intestinal microbiota may similarly play an active role in the development of complex metabolic abnormalities, such as susceptibility to insulin resistance and fatty liver disease [75]. Subsequent examination of germ-free versus conventional mice on high-fat diet revealed that both insulin sensitivity and cholesterol metabolism are metabolic targets influenced by the intestinal microbiota [76]. Complementary clinical studies further demonstrated that elevated circulating levels of the gut flora metabolite within subjects
According to Howston-Jones (2013) reflection is not something that is out of the ordinary for everyone to do in their everyday lives. Reflection is the act of looking back on a situation, event or incident critically and making sense of it to learn from it and alter our actions to gain better outcomes should the same incident arise again (Capelhow, Crouch, Fisher & Walsh, 2013). As new experiences happen to everyone, everyday; it would be right to consider reflection as an ongoing process within everyone’s life, a process that is repeated, honed and a skill to be developed (McKenna, 1998).
If I had a time travel machine, I would love to go back to our class’s first meeting. It was such a memorable day. I was so nervous that my first piece of writing seemed less than mediocre as I reflected on what I had written that day. While being happy that my name was randomly chosen to be added to the class, I was very scared of this class. The last time I wrote an essay was two years ago, and before this class I had forgotten how to write one. I believe good writing requires lots of practice, and I have not practiced my writing for a long time. In addition, my reading was not even up to par since I only read books required for my classes. I did not
