I have worked for the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services (WVDRS) for over three years as a Rehabilitation Service Associate. During that time I have been given the opportunity to work with the clients that we serve on a regular basis. However, the practicum experience provided me with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the rehabilitation process and what it means to work as a team with individuals to achieve goals. The practicum experience also gave me insight on the processes involved in providing individuals information and assistance in finding solutions to help overcome or work through challenges encountered on a daily basis.

Neal didn't know anyone in Portland. He never knew anyone in any city he traveled to on business. His accounting firm shipped him all over New England to teach tax prep to new hires at subsidiary offices. Each trip drove him farther and farther north, deep into the land of brick mill buildings. Some were repurposed and modernized, others sat idly waiting for the 19th century to come back in style. The people were more or less the same. Neal stared down at the faded black marks on his hands. There are black, green, blue, and red dry-erase markers in every conference room in America. None of them work, black is best in any case, and the erasers are never to be found. His hands were coated in faded black marker residue. His cuticles were black, and regardless of how he scrubbed, they stayed that way.
Evaluating and treating a client in an appropriate manner is an integral part of being an occupational therapist. Applying my basic knowledge of the practice framework and occupational therapy models I have chosen to evaluate the video featuring J.D. Through the viewing of this video and applying my knowledge I will evaluate the client’s performance skills and patterns, his expressed needs and wishes for therapy, and identify an applicable occupational model.
I was astonished that occupational therapists made a discernible difference in my grandmother’s life to return to doing the things again she cherished in life. My grandmother was able to do the daily activities without relying on someone else’s assistance. Consequently, I realize that I want to become an occupational therapist because I want to create a positive impact on a person’s life, the way the occupational therapist did for my grandmother. Therefore, I am sure that occupational therapy is a career that I want to pursue. I would like to give an effectual treatment for patients, as my grandmother, go from not being able to do things to being able to do daily tasks again. I would like to gain abilities and effective techniques to help people of all ages who need me and make a difference in their lives. I would like to help disabled and sick people do their daily routines again such as getting dressed, driving and writing. Besides, I am so motivated by the diverse nature of the work and the consequences of meaningful activities that help people improve their qualities of life in order to actively participate in

The implications for further research and practice is the recognition, in practice, that evidence-based services produce greater successful vocational rehabilitation, and that this might offset the negative effects of local unemployment rates. Further research, at specific locations, would be needed to enhance these findings and determine the best possible labor markets for PWDs, concurrent with their desires, and if those can actually be interwoven into a successful Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).
