Metallica is considered one of the first metal bands of the early eighties. They are a part of the big four, the other three include Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. The metal genre is proven to have the biggest fan base over any other genre. In this article I will only be talking about their early years and going up to their first four albums. Most diehard Metallica fans will argue that their first four albums are true Metallica and after that they went mainstream to try and branch out to other audiences.

In 1983, Metallica recorded their first album Kill ‘em All. Metallica recorded its second studio album,Ride the Lightning, at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was released in August 1984 and reached number 100 on the Billboard 200. Although Mustaine was kicked out he still received credit for writing "Ride the Lightning" and "The Call of Ktulu". Metallica’s third album Master of Puppets was recorded in March of 1986 at the same studio. On September 27, 1986, during the European leg of Metallica's Damage, Inc. Tour, members drew cards to determine which bunks on the tour bus they would sleep in. Burton won and chose to sleep in Hammett's bunk. At around sunrise near Dorarp, Sweden, the bus driver lost control and skidded, which caused the bus to overturn several times. Ulrich, Hammett, and Hetfield sustained no serious injuries; however, bassist Burton was pinned under the bus and died. Burtons death was unexpected and led the band to not know what to do. The same year they recruited bassist Jason Newsted. Metallica's first studio album since Burton's death, And Justice for All, was released in 1988. In 1989, Metallica received its first Grammy Award nomination for And Justice for All in the new Best Hard Rock/Metal Vocal or Instrument

It was on March fourteenth that Metallica played their first gig at radio city Anaheim in California. On June fourteenth the Metal Massacre LP was released and it was Metallica's first appearance on an official record. The first release of the LP contained a few mistakes including band’s name being miss spelt Mettallica and Lloyd grants name being misspelled as Loydd Grant.

In 1973, Al Atkins and Chris Campbell left the band because they weren’t happy with the band’s lack of money. Sue Halford mentioned her brother, Rob Halford, as an exchange for Al, welcoming him into the band soon after (Bowe 33). This seemed to turn things around for Judas Priest. In 1978, the band began to change up their look. Instead of satin bloused, bell-bottoms, and wide-brimmed hats, they wore black leather and metal studs (Bowe 40). After the release of “Hell Bent for Leather” in 1979, they brought in handcuffs and whips, completing their look. After this, many heavy metal bands had began to take on the look as well (Bowe 42). CREEM magazine decided to put Judas Priest on the cover in August 1981 (Bowe 47). Judas Priest’s only concert appearance was a huge charity concert in Philadelphia and London in 1985 to help people in Africa that were starving, and the name of this organization was Live Aid. In that same year, many heavy metal artists got criticized for their lyrics (Bowe 53). From all the stress of the Reno trial and constant touring and recording, Rob Halford wanted a break from the band, officially leaving in 1992. As their story continued, each band’s sound and style took different paths. This in turn gained both bands each a different kind of fanbase and amounts of success. Metallica was an easy pick because they are currently the most successful metal band in the world in terms of awards and money (http://www.metalinjection.net/editorials/5-reasons-metallica-remain-the-greatest-band-ever). It will be interesting to find out how a non-commercial genre like metal can achieve commercial music-like success and status.
Since the beginning of time, many bands and artists have helped shape the way people live. Thirty Seconds to Mars, with lead singer Jared Leto, is a very successful pop-rock band. Starting in 1998, the members of this band did not have it easy. Neither did Ludwig van Beethoven who grew to be one of the most successful composers of all time. Taking in the world and challenges around them, both of these artists overcame many obstacles to become what they are known for. Their fans have followed and have been inspired by them. The band Thirty Seconds to Mars and Ludwig van Beethoven came from two different eras and have rough times in their youth but overcame to succeed in the music world.
