Introduction
According to (American Cancer Society: Cancer Facts & Figures 2013), Skin Cancer has remained as the most common type of cancer in the United States over the years. For instance the report estimate that in 2013 over 2 million people in the United States were likely to be diagnosed with skin cancer while another estimate of one million people would be diagnosed with Melanoma skin cancer (American Cancer Society: Cancer Facts & Figures 2013). This therefore means that Melanoma skin cancer is the most common type of skin cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society also suggests that a lot of money estimated to be around a minimum of $8.4 billion is spent annually in the treatment of skin cancer related illnesses which is a huge amount of money (American Cancer Society: Cancer Facts & Figures

In addition, the risk factors of contracting skin cancer are likely to be on the increase particularly due to the effects of the Green House Effect resulting from global warming due to the high levels of industrialization currently being experienced around the world (Moy, R., & Famenini, S. (2013). This therefore means it will be inevitable for the relevant public health authorities to come up with effective skin cancer prevention strategies.
This paper suggests that there are four strategies that are likely to have the greatest impact on the prevention of skin cancer: (1) UVR prevention education for early childhood to juveniles. This is meant to impact knowledge on the need to wear a hat as well as use sun screens right from an early age and it increases the awareness levels within the community. (2) Prevention of sun exposure at
CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION: SKIN
Often times , most people do not think twice about the dangers of skin cancer . The leading cause of skin cancer is too much exposure to the sun. Skin cancer can be prevented , as well as treatable with the help of suns
The National Skin Cancer Awareness Program represents the new public health approach. This is because it has been created to prevent and reduce the incidence of skin cancer among teenagers and young adults. It takes into account the social determinants that influence a person’s health. For example, due to the sun’s very strong UV rays, Australia is a very hot country and
This article accounts the Surgeon General’s mission to prevent skin cancer in the United States because it has become a major public health problem. This “Call to Action” has five major goals to support prevention, other methods of protection, reduce indoor tanning damage, increase the public’s knowledge, and strengthen research. It gives information about laws that have been applied in a majority of the states, including Indiana, that restrict indoor tanning. This emphasizes how serious skin cancer is becoming and how UV tanning could be a factor if government actions are being taken.
There are three main types of skin cancer. These are malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. While melanoma is the most life-threatening of the three, it is also the most
In 2011, there was an estimated 65,647 patients diagnosed with melanoma, and 9,128 deaths from melanoma in the United States.[1] Rates for new melanoma of the skin have been rising on average 1.8% each year from 2002 to 2011.[2] It has been estimated that 1 in 75 persons born in the year 2000 will develop melanoma of the skin during their lifetime.[3] Like most cancers, the outcome of melanoma depends on the stage at diagnosis, which makes the early detection and treatment of melanoma important.[4] However, in the United States approximately 80% of biopsies performed in a primary care setting are benign.[5] Technologies such as RCM may have the ability to reduce invasive diagnostic procedures such as a biopsy or excision associated with
In "The Chrysanthemums," by John Steinbeck, the protagonist, Elisa, elicits her frustrations of the gender roles society has developed. This is done throughout the story, and is illustrated through the characters personalities, setting, themes, and symbols. Elisa is a woman who values equality immensely however since she is not a male, she does not have as fulfilling of a life in regards to being able to pursue a career or any outside activities the same way a man could of the time. She also values sexual fulfilment although her and her husband, Henry, lack it. Elisa and Henry have a functioning, yet passionless marriage, and tend to more often times than not, treat one another more like siblings rather than spouses.
Melanoma is very common it is the fifth most common cancer for men and the seventh for women. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer a severe type of skin cancer. Skin cancer is a very serious thing because skin is the largest organ in the body and it protects us from many things. Ultraviolet radiation or UV light is what cause skin cancer it comes from the sun and tanning beds(Cosmetic Procedures: Sun Exposure and Skin Cancer).
The third factor that plays a major role in causing skin cancer is the Ozone layer. It helps protect people from ultraviolet radiation. However, the ozone layer is shrinking and this is due to man-made products like sprays and combustion of cars that are emitted in the atmosphere. This process is allowing more ultraviolet penetration to the earth thus increasing risk of skin cancer (Bair, 1991, P. 367,368). Ultraviolet radiation are the chief causes for skin cancer because the UV radiation
Cutaneous melanoma (hereafter referred as melanoma) is a worldwide public health concern. In developed countries melanoma ranks as the sixth most frequently diagnosed cancer overall [1]. In the United States, melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in men and seventh most common cancer in women [2]. The incidence of melanoma, the most commonly fatal form of skin cancer, is increasing faster than any other potentially preventable cancer in the United States [3-4]. World wide epidemiological data shows similar increases over the past years, with a leveling off in other countries [5]. Some researchers attribute the increase in the incidence of melanoma to a more scrutinized detection program [6-7].
There are three main types of skin cancer; Basal cell carcinomas, Squamous cell carcinomas, and Melanomas. Basal cell carcinomas is important to know about because it is the most common type of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma is abnormal, uncontrolled growths that arise in the skin’s basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis (“Skin Cancer Foundation1”). This type of skin cancer rarely grows from the location of the tumor. There are some very rare cases where it may spread, but it is very unlikely. The second most common form of skin cancer is Squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the squamous cells, which compose most of the skin’s upper layers (“Skin Cancer Foundation Squamous Cell Carcinoma1”). Squamous cell carcinoma normally occurs where the sun is most exposed such as the head, neck, back of hand, and ear, but can occur anywhere on the body. It is not common that this type of cancer will spread or grow bigger, but it is more likely to spread or grow than basal cell carcinoma. The third and most aggressive type of skin cancer is Melanoma. The more aggressive the cancer is, the more dangerous and life-threatening it will be. Melanoma looks like a flat mole and can even make a new mole on your skin. Stage 0 of melanoma
Over the last several years, the total number of skin cancer (melanoma) cases in Australia has been rising dramatically. Evidence of this can be seen with statistics provided by the Cancer Council of Australia. They determined that melanoma is most common form of cancer for individuals between the ages of 15 and 44 years of age. To make matters worse over 1 million people are screened for this disease every single year. This is illustrating how some kind of increased protection is required to protect consumers against the sun's ultra violet rays. ("Skin Cancer Facts and Figures," 2012)
Skin cancer is the most common case and source of cancer in the United States. In fact, every year there are more skin cancer cases than cases of breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers combined (Skin Cancer Foundation [SCF], 2015). Skin cancer has the ability to impact many Americans. One in five Americans will develop at least one case of skin cancer in the course of a lifetime (SCF, 2015). About 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S each year. A more dangerous kind of skin cancer, melanoma, will account for more than 73,000 cases of skin cancer in 2015 (American Cancer
The color of a person’s skin is therefore an obvious indicator of the likelihood of getting sunburn and subsequently developing skin cancer. At present, a cancer is termed “common” if there is annual incidence of 30,000 cases or more. One out of every three newly diagnosed cancers is a skin cancer and approximately one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States every
Australians are more prone to skin cancer than any other form of cancer. Skin cancer occurs when the skin cells are damaged due to over exposure to ultraviolet radiations. There are three types of skin cancer melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Over the past few decades the number of skin cancer has risen in Australia. Anyone can be at risk as chances increases as you grow older .Melanoma a type of skin cancer showed increase in diagnosis by 60% from the year 1982 to 2010 (Fransen et al., 2012). According to the latest data provided by, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) 2,209 people died of skin cancer in 2013 (Fransen et al., 2012). When compared to transport accidents skin cancer causes more deaths every year ("Skin cancer incidence and mortality - Skin Cancer Statistics and Issues," 2015). The effect of disease places a great demand on healthcare industry. As general practitioners (GPs) has encountered 1 million patients of skin care every year. Dr Colin Mathers(AIHW 's Principal Research Fellow), said that skin cancer is most expensive cancer in australia nearly $232million invested in cancers treatment ("New report analyses costs of cancer in Australia (AIHW)," 2015). The economic losses are also affecting Australian society due to significant production losses.
Thesis: Many people do not use sun protection on a daily bases and are unaware of the health effects of sun exposure that can be easily preventive by using sun protection.
