Introduction Today I will be talking about what the Colosseum. The Colosseum is very interesting. So, I will be talking about what the Colosseum is used for, what the Colosseum was made out of, when the Colosseum was built and also about the gladiator fights that happened in the Colosseum. And in my opinion the Colosseum holds a lot of history. So I will be teaching a lot about the Colosseum. The meaning of the Colosseum A lot of people ask “what is the meaning of the Colosseum”? Well one, reason the Colosseum was used for is Gladiator fights. This was the main reason the Colosseum was used for. Another reason why the Colosseum was used for is entertainment for people since there would be
It was Rome's most popular building. The Colosseum was a large outdoor stadium that could seat thousands and thousands of people. The people were entrained by battles, plays, and games. The Colosseum was a free standing building as shown in Document E, it had many different levels and floors in which people could sit and enjoy the entertainment. Many natural disasters occrued in The Colosseum
The Roman Colosseum was built throughout 70-80 A.D. It was a large, circular stone arena and was a very popular attraction in Rome. The Colosseum was used as a place of entertainment for the Romans (Doc 5). The Colosseum was the entertainment center of Rome and it was used as an amphitheater, arena, held gladiatorial events and people socialized there. The Colosseum influenced the U.S because in the U.S we have entertainment centers including movie theaters, wrestling matches, and sports games where people socialize and are entertained.
Arguably, this one catches the eye, more significantly than all other stadiums in the world. Basically, there is no way to compare the Colosseum to Madison Square Garden Stadium or Emirates Stadium. The Colosseum is notorious as a prominently marvelous symbol of ancient Rome. This stadium has been and is a revolutionary likeness of vicissitude in manufacturing and composition, having been intact for almost 2000 years. By being most utile, the hugest, and to a greater extent, the most methodologically progressive architecture of its time, this massive Gargantuan essentially paved the way for thousands of postliminary stadiums. Not until the early 20th centuries, nothing could even come close to matching the Colosseum’s luxuriousness.
Being in a gladiator fight was like being a mine detector in an army, if you make a mistake, you or your friend dies. It took a tremendous amount of skill and patience to strike just at the right time. Gladiators were a very crucial part to the roman economy and the safety of the Emperor. The most famous gladiator was Spartacus because of his revolt with other slaves against the Romans. There are many different types of gladiators, for example, a thracian and a Secutor. The Roman Empire also became very intimidating so other countries would not even attempt to fight. The Colosseum was the most popular arena for gladiators, but there were many other arenas. The gladiators were important during the Roman Empire because they celebrated the dead
Romans who made it famous. A surviving feature of the Roman games was when a
Throughout this report, the uses and the importance that the arena had on Roman society will be discussed as well as the various factors in which it was allowed to do so. Using historical documents and sources the goal is to inform the reader in why the arena was so important to Roman society. The Colosseum, known as the Flavian Amphitheater and located just east of the Roman forum, is a massive stone arena that was commissioned around A. D. 70-72 by Emperor Vespasian. The iconic arena would not have been as popular as it is today if it wasn’t for the gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights which took place. The arena had a very important role in Roman society having a huge influence on the political side of Rome; the social ranking system and it gave the people a source of entertainment.
For as long as humans have existed, they have always found some way to entertain themselves. Even the earliest societies have left evidence of some sort of activity or hobby that they used as a form of entertainment. Perhaps the most famous building that was used as a form of entertainment is the Roman Colosseum, also known as the Flavian amphitheater. In ancient Rome, the most popular form of entertainment was the gladiator fights. These fights, usually among animals and trained public fighters, were staged in open arenas in a city's forum. There is evidence
As Mark Cartwright states in his article “Colosseum,” the word ‘Colosseum’ or ‘Flavian Amphitheatre’ is a large arena that was built in Rome under the emperors Flavian Dynasty, Vespasian, Titus, and Domition. During the opening festival of the Colosseum, hundreds of people and wild animals were killed. However, the purpose of this building was to make people happy; it was used for public entertainments. In fact, all the shows and games were presented in this building. The Colosseum was a place where the Gladiators used to fight.
The gladiators were a popular sport in Ancient Rome. Starting as a ritual performed at funerals that were for the purpose of giving the deceased attendants for the afterlife. Though as time went on, fights became larger and more for entertainment then for funerals. Many gladiators that were used were unfree criminals, slaves, war prisoners, and sometimes even free men and rarely, women until they were later banned from participating. These games were often very large ceremonies that happened only a couple of times a year that would last days on end. Many people would set up shops outside the colosseum with food, drinks, and other goods. They would usually start with a procession of the combatants and the sponsors of the games during the morning
The Colosseum reflect in their society because this is who the Romans were. The seats were arrange where the wealthy would seat in the front, and the further back you got the lower class you were. This was also an opportunity for the gladiator to showcase what they were all about. The Romans liked to be entertained and what better way to do it than to watch a show in the Colosseum. The structure of it was amazing even today the Colosseum is a must see if you are touring Rome. I personally like how it was built for an event. Just like today that people gather around the television, or some make there way to a stadium. The Roman capture what we like to consider today an event like Football or any sport. Just like today the structure matters just like it did back then. The Colosseum was massive a spectacle. I love the work because it it hard to imagine something like that can be created in the 80 CE. What I especially like and wish that I could of seen are the battles that took place inside the
Rome had many great things, especially within their love of brutality. Many of the Roman people enjoyed to take a break from their hard, ancient, lives and watch some grown men battle people, lions, tigers, and bears to the death (oh my!).
It was a form of entertainment for the people to go to coliseums to watch the gladiators fight and kill each other. They would pay to watch slaves fight and see the death of a lot of them... Gladiators would be seen as club rites today. It was a part of the Romans daily life to go watch people die... In these days, that type of stuff would be unacceptable and very, very cruel. A lot of the Romans enjoyed too go watch the gladiators fight each other to death, but other thought it as supposed to be

Keegan (2005) elaborates on the brutal events held within this structure, also questioning the morality of these civilized people who enjoyed viewing murderous games. He explains that these actions are a complex representation of their culture’s architectural achievement and human barbarism seen through gladiator combats. There was a large amount of effort and preparation put into organizing and maintenance, worth it as the Colosseum continued to be rigorously used for the next four centuries. Eventually, these activities were phased out and the site later turned into a ruin, to be scavenged for its materials. Natural phenomena such as lightning and earthquakes contributed also contributed to this. It’s impressive how although the Colosseum’s function drastically changed over time, it continues to provide benefit to people.
The Roman Colosseum, a colossal amphitheater, was built in the first century under Flavian's rule. Many events such as gladiator games, beast fights, naval battles, and much more took place inside the huge elliptical arena. People of all ages and classes attended these well-known spectacles. The Colosseum is a huge Roman architectural achievement and the fact that it is still standing today only amplifies the importance of this structure. Hundred of thousands of people attended the ancient games, and even more continue to visit the arena today.
