The Mayan culture was a very influential part of history, and work they did still impacts us today. How did they influence us you might ask? Mayans had many accomplishments in astronomy, engineering, math, and architecture. They even developed one of the world’s first written languages. The Mayan people began to settle in the Yucatan area which is now known as Mexico sometime between 2600 and 1800 BC. As time went on, their culture and religion began to settle. What we now call the Mayan Empire came into being between 250 and 900 AD. The Mayans were Polytheistic, meaning they believed in multiple gods. Their Religion played a major role in their culture because their social system, agriculture, calendar, recreational activities and ceremonial rituals were all linked to their religion. The Mayans worshipped a pantheon of gods, and their rulers were supposedly related to them and acted as intermediaries between the gods and humans. Their religion influenced the way other cultures thought, and inspired other religions and cultures as well. The Mayans weren’t the first to create the calendar, but there development of it is one of the only completely understood calendars of Mesoamerica. The Mayans also wrote the first fully written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, and it’s also known as one of the most sophisticated art of the ancient new world. The Mayans were also the first people to recognize the four primary compass directions. We use compass directions to this day, and if they didn’t find it first who knows how long it would’ve taken to find it.
