The Mayans of Mesoamerica
The ancient Mayans were a very well developed society with a very accurate calendar, skilled architects, artisans, extensive traders and hunters. They are known to have developed medicine and astronomy as well. All of this was developed while the Europeans were still in the Dark Ages.
Their empire covered an area of roughly 400,000 to 500,000 square kilometers. This area included the present day countries of Belize, Guatemala, western Honduras and El Salvador, and also southern portions of Mexico. These lands have a very diverse terrain, from the mountainous highlands to the tropical lowlands. The wide range of geographical features meant that the

The Maya civilization can be divided into three main periods: Pre-Classic, Classic, and Post-Classic. Their greatest accomplishments most likely took place in the Classic period. This period occurred between 250 and 910AD. An extensive trade network was in place during this period that allowed the civilization to grow as large as sixty separate kingdoms. Other technological advances also took place during this time.
They developed their writing system, mathematics, astronomy, and calendars. Their study of astronomy allowed them to predict when there would be a solar or lunar eclipse. They also developed their calendar that is called the Long Count Calendar. The Long Count Calendar was not completely a Mayan creation because they inherited the basic form from the Toltec.
The mathematics developed by the Maya was a base 20 numbering system. This is similar to the base 10 system we use today. The Maya were able to do this using only three symbols, the dot, the bar, and a symbol for zero.
The numbering system was written vertically instead of horizontally like the one we use today. The base level can be represented by 20^0, and each additional level increases the exponent by one. This is shown in the graphic below.
The Mayan calendar has a starting date of 3113BC that is given the year 0. It used their base 20 numbering system to represent periods of time. There
They used a positional system based on the number 20 rather than 10. As Document C shows us, they even had symbols for the numbers 1, 5, and 0 which helped differentiate. They made use of this system by incorporating it into the calendars i talked about earlier. The Mayans were one of the first cultures in the world to develop the idea of the zero. This evidence proves that this achievement was remarkable because it was genius.
The Mayans numbering system was by 20, rather than 10 and they were one of the first cultures in the world to develop the idea of the zero. The numbering system cannot work without a symbol for zero when the position is empty.
Based on Document C, "The Maya used a positional system based on the number 20, rather than the number 10, and they were one of the first cultures in the world to develop the idea of the zero". This is an amazing thing for the Mayans to use since they also do a lot of trade. They now have this whole system of numbers (that include some numbers other civilizations didn't have) that they can use during trade. It helps keep track of goods that come and go. The number zero comes in handy here because it shows when no goods come
The Mayan number system used only three symbols, the dot, the bar, and the shell. This written number system was based on twenties just as our number system is based on tens. The Mayan number system even had a symbol for zero. What makes this number system so remarkable is the fact that the Mayans “were one of the first cultures to develop the ideas of the zero”(Whitlock). The use of the zero allows for the Maya to count to higher numbers without having to write out hundreds of little characters.
In my opinion I think that the mayan number system was their most remarkable achievement. I think this because of mainly three reasons that stand out the most. First I think that the number system was their greatest achievement because they were able to use symbols instead of numbers. Second, this is remarkable because it lead to greater things like building pyramids, houses, and other types of structures. Third the counting system was the most remarkable because it was used for their amazing calendars. This took their civilisation to an whole new level. But over all I think that the number system was their most remarkable achievement.
The most remarkable achievement of the Maya is their number system. However from all of their achievements I feel the less but still important ones was the cities and buildings they built, their trade network, and their calendar.
The Egyptians also had a calendar system. Today, the calendar is still used today by multiple groups in areas of Guatemala. The Mayans writing system was extremely similar to those of the Egyptians, as both used a system of hieroglyphics, pictures that represented something. Their writing systems were both used to record calendar information, administrative data and
The Maya were a people from Middle America, which includes modern Guatemala, Southern Mexico, and Northern Belize (Editors). The Maya civilization was considered to be “one of the most dominant indigenous societies of Mesoamerica,” (Maya). “The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar-making, and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork,” (Maya). They also gave mankind the modern calendar (Jarus, Maya). The Mayans were a very advanced people, but one of the most important things in the Mayan culture was their religion/god worshipping rituals.
The Mayans were also were technologically advanced. They used their own math system. One dot stood for one, a bar symbolized five, and a shell figure was zero. The numbers were expressed vertically with the highest on top. The also created a very precise calendars. Two different calendars were calculated 260-day and a 365-day. They were able to calculate the dates because at noon time there was no shadow. This was important for them to use in predicting eclipses, scheduling religious ceremonies, and when to plant and harvest.
The Mayans most remarkable feats was the creation of their Calendar. The Mayan calendar was considered to be one of the most accurate records of time created by an early civilization. This
Facts about the Mayan Civilization There are a lot of interesting facts about the Mayan Civilization. First of all, the Mayans made three calendars that worked in periods. The calendar Haab has 365 day period like, the Gregorian calendar. The calendar Long Count period is roughly every 2,880,000 days and it was said to reset in 2012, which led to the doomsday prophecies. Secondly, The Mayans perhaps were the first Civilization outside of the Babylonian systems to explicitly use the number zero as a place holder, which later the Indian mathematicians became the first to use it as a mathematical value in computers.
The Mayan civilization had many achievements including remarkable technology and astronomy. Surprisingly, the Ancient Mayans managed to build extravagant temples and great cities without what we today would consider indispensable tools. Nevertheless, they did use a number of modern innovations and tools like decorative art. For example, they built complex looms for weaving cloth and devised a rainbow of glittery paints made from mica, a mineral that we still use today as a modern
The Maya also had the number zero. This may not sound great but if we did not have zero we could not have numbers like ten, one hundred and one thousand. Also since the Mayans did not use their numbers like ours, used a stacking
When most people think of the Mayans, they think end of the world prediction in 2012. Everyone knows the movie 2012 which portrayed the end of the world predicted by the Mayan calendar. What many do not know is that the Mayans developed three separate calendars; the Long Count, the Tzolk’in, and the Haab, which were represented by glyphs or pictures that were used in their daily lives in many different ways. The Mayans kept time in a very different way than we do today. The Mayans may not have invented the calendar, but they certainly developed it further, and still use their version today.
The Mayan civilization lasted more than 2,000 years which gave them plenty of time to make big advancements in all the aspects. One of them was developing their own complex understanding of astronomy. The Mayans were great believers of the cosmos being a part of their lives. Because of these beliefs the were able to predict how solar eclipses and this was helpful for them because they were able to create two very useful calendars, which are now available for us that have precise planting and harvesting development. The first, is the calendar round was on two overlapping annual cycles a 260-day sacred year and 365- day secular year. The sacred year was, called the Tzolk’in, matching nine cycles of the moon and the gestational period of humans.
