Maya Angelou Still I Rise

The poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou sharply contrasts to the description of black people in Macomb country in To Kill a Mockingbird. The poem and the novel are about the same theme discrimination but it has different aspects. In the poem, Maya Angelou says “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies, you may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust, I’ll rise”(Stanza 1). In this poem Maya Angelou is discriminated and treated badly by the whites’ but she is still strong and confident about what she is doing. In To Kill a Mockingbird the black man, Tom Robinson is accused of raping white women (p.223). In this situation Tom Robinson feels guilty and fears about his life. Maya Angelou’s poem is very joyful and it teaches us a lesson about how to overcome the problem. The overall mood of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is dreadful. In “Sill I Rise” poem Maya Angelou expresses courage and confident. She says that she will not let anyone to knock her down. In “Still I rise” poem Maya Angelou says “Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard ‘cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines diggin’in my own back yard” (Stanza 5). In the quote she explains that no matter what happens to her, she will rise back and get over with it. In Harper Lee’s novel the mood is about sad and gloomy. The story also has unfair ending where Tom Robinson tries to escape from the jail and gets shot by the police (p.315).Even though Maya Angelou gets hurt by the white’s she is still rising back but in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robison is worries a lot and lack of
