After watching the video on Mary's meals and the poverty of children all over the world it almost opened my eyes to problems i've never noticed before. First of all, I realized that my life is great and that everything that I have is amazing and I should cherish every minute because people have it much worse than me. Next I came to a realization that poverty is much worse than what I ever could expect. For example this one girl was only 12 years of age and both of her parents had died. This meant that she had to take care of her both her younger brothers with no job and no money. The only way that they could get food was through the power of Mary’s meals with supplies about ½ a million meals every to school children and orphans with no food.
Have you ever thought about what it is like to be constantly hungry as a result of not having access to adequate food? For some people in the world this is a reality. In my interview with Melinda Vonderhorst she recounts her personal observations from her five trips to Haiti, where she helped to build a school along with working in an orphanage and clinic, of countless children
Society has thrived against adversity with virtues of hope, fueled by the belief of a higher power. In The Book of Martha, by Octavia Butler, the protagonist, Martha, seeks a solution to end humanity’s greed, which will eventually lead to their inevitable demise. For centuries, religion has had an impact in the way societies view ethical and moral issues. Human kindness has always been at the core of each act behind religious beliefs. These acts of kindness have been made with the intention to progress ourselves as a society and as a community. An interview with Father Jesus de la Tapia, from The Parish of Santa Rosa, highlighted the social impact that these acts of kindness can bring to our community. Although Martha’s actions are those set in a fictional story, her belief in God and ability to bring humanity together, are actions which can be seen in our community, making it a better place.
The social adversity that plagues millions seems to be a far cry from the hospitality of late summertime Helena and not a day passes by when Edens doesn’t appreciate his blessings. “I don’t have to wake up in the morning and worry about getting food or if my drink of water with breakfast is going to kill me.” Unfortunately, for so many around the world, survival is a daily struggle. To so many, there is no assurance of tomorrow. There is no promise of food, clean water, shelter or basic medical care. Ryan Edens and the Carroll Outreach Team seek to change these problems one human being at a
I also decided also take a look at the Food Bank case study. “…Jesus said that I came that you might have life and life more abundantly” (John 10:10). Mount Zion’s congregation is not participating in the abundant life that Jesus intended for them. Embedded in this case study are issues of poverty and lack as well as some issues of conflict between members of the church.
Although I had sufficient meals in morning and evening, I was still hunger during day time. I played tennis on Wednesday. While running on the court, I felt extremely dehydrated and starving. When I hit the ball, I suddenly felt that I was going to fall down because I was shaky and exhausted. I ran to the bathroom and squatted down. I was overwhelmed by my weakness that a sense of insecurity surrounded me. “I am weak”, I told myself, “I can not do this”. I suddenly reflected on my experience in Yemen. I was sitting in the car while I witnessed refugee children knocking on my window and tirelessly begging for food. In their eyes, I saw no anger but fear. All they worried about were the basic need of living: food. Many people, nowadays, fast to lose weight. For them, fasting shows their courage and persistence. They lose the sympathy to the poor who starve to death. However, many poor people, including labors and refugees, have to do heavy manual work for livings. In addition to physical pain, the poor also suffer mentally. For instance, the refugee children are always worrying about their next meals with no sense of secure. They have no hope to their futures. With the experience of working in hunger, I am able to relate my feelings to poor people’s feelings and show empathy toward them.
There are 50 million people who live in poverty in the U.S, today. There are more than 30 million children growing up in bad conditions. Due to lack of money some people are unable to afford food and shelter which result in homelessness. On a night in January 2014, 578,424 people were experiencing homelessness. These people were sleeping outside or in an emergency shelter because they couldn’t afford to pay for a place to stay and had no family that would let them stay over. Included in the 578,424 homeless people were war veterans, people with mental health issues, people whose families have thrown them out, and more. During the winter, many homeless people freeze to death because they don’t have the appropriate clothing for the low temperature. Today there are about 795 million people out of the 7.3 billion people in the world, suffering from chronic malnourishment. Over a thousand people go through their day without eating including men, women, and children. These people are too poor to afford food for themselves or their families; although there are food stamps and other services to provide to help these families, some don’t want to accept this help because they believe it is their job to provide for their
More than a million children and families are living among us in poverty. Agenizing over when their next supper is, or if they can take a decent shower. It kills me to see the children of the future living in such poverty. Due to job loss and other things, people are worrying about money, and home structure. Children are left moving from shelter to shelter with no guidance and loss of hope for the future. A part of me thinks that living in poverty is a part the domino effect. A job loss leads to loss of money, then a loss of a home, then worrying about bills, food, and water.
A couple years ago, I noticed something while my mother was taking me to the mall. It was an indigent man with a sign stating “Help me”. Often as a child, I wanted to assist needy individuals around me. This seemed like a substantial opportunity to make that into a reality, I opened my car window and held out change. He came running and took the money while uttering the words “God Bless You”. This hit me hard. I thought about this for a while and it occurred to me that we take our lives for granted, but don’t realize that millions and millions of people cannot enjoy life because money is an immense need. In third world countries, there are not enough money and facilities available. Being born and growing up in Canada, I didn't realize that
Hunger in America happens every year to homeless people, kids, and adults,as sad as it is even new born babies. This could happen to anyone why? There is several reasons maybe some people don’t have the money. What if you were that person how would you live knowing that your child isn’t getting proper nutrition? Many people don’t seem to realize how much this really happens. one in 7 people in the United States face trying and struggling to get food to eat, and more than 12 million American family’s face hunger. Food insecurity is harmful to all people, but it is especially devastating to children. Proper nutrition is what a child’s needs to help with their development or you can say growing. Did you know that while hunger is nonstop - African
The act of interest about this specific world issue has helped me pursue in contributing to those who are in financial crisis. With the help of my First Religious Confirmation program, I was able to help multiple of low income families by providing them with donated essential clothes and foods at the Santa Ana Civic Center. My program and I advertised our special cause to the community and have obtained numerous of food cans and clothes that can provide about ten families. Making a difference in people's lives have brought me joy in making a positive influence to them. Nobody should not be alone in facing their struggle but to to open to others in helping them. Because businesses are limited with hiring employees, many people in poverty does
Forty-six million people living in poverty in America today. America is the most wealthiest country in the world. America is called the “Land of Opportunity”, yet we have families who go to bed hungry each night. Poverty is defined as the state of being extremely poor. Lacking the most basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. Their is a young girl living in a one room shack scooping the remaining beans from the stove onto a plate for herself. She is walking towards her corner of the room, while her mother does without anything to eat yet again for a second night. This is not in a third world country where this girl lives, but it is right here in America. Although people who live in poverty
Words were not needed to convey their message of hopelessness. I first served a boy and girl who seemed to be in their tweens. A parent was not in sight, they had just come by themselves for the food. Their clothes were tattered and breaking at the seams, held up by bodies of thin frames, that suggested years of malnourishment. Over the years of my life, the news has shown me countless stories of the horrors of poverty and starvation, but seeing it in real life was a whole different story. I grabbed my spatula and gave them each the biggest pieces of lasagna I could find. They held out their styrofoam plates in awe, and their faces changed from a gloomy shade to a bright smile. It was evident how important this was to them and it was me, my own actions, that had healed their despair. I was filled with meaning and accomplishment, but when they stepped out the door something occurred to me. The good feelings were only temporary. They were back in the real world, where human beings were left without homes, struggling with addiction, and without the slightest clue if they were ever going to be full
“A Family Supper” by Kazuo Ishiguro has an interesting twist on love and family, albeit grotesque to some, the literature is meaningful. The characters played a major role in how the family dynamics played against one another. The family home sets the reader up to understand the isolation the father felt. The conflicts the characters experience have shaped them into the people they are presently. The lack of an ending also plays a major role in the way love and family is portrayed by the author and will conclude how love and family relate to this piece of literature.
Often times I find myself thinking, “Oh we have no food” or “I don’t feel like any of that [food].” I have become aware that many people do not have choices or even enough food around to keep them from starving. Their lifestyle in a house with a dirt floor also made me aware of the blessings that I have been given by God in my daily life. With a roof over my head and a bed, I have so much more than those in developing countries such as Guatemala. Analysis---What are some
When I was little, I heard stories of Third World countries where people lived in complete poverty. I would hear of how they had dilapidated domiciles, contaminated water, deadly diseases, and shortages of food. I was always told how blessed I was to live in a country where I was free of these situations, but I always took this truth for granted. I would go along every day, not worrying about where I was going to sleep or what I was going to eat, when people all over the world were facing these situations as problems. It wasn't until I was sixteen that I realized how blessed I was, when I was given the opportunity to visit San Jose, Costa Rica.
