Martin Luther's 95 Thesis

Luther was zealous towards the gospel. He felt strongly about the gospel and felt it was unfair only the upperclassmen and well educated could read and interpret the bible themselves. People should be able to read and interpret God’s word themselves rather than trusting the pope’s interpretations. This was unpopular with the Catholic Church because they felt a loss of control over the masses and common people. What is more is the people of Wittenberg were too unintelligent to understand God’s word and this lead to the translating of the New Testament to German in 1529. It was not long before Luther took it upon himself to translate the Gospel in its entirety to German.

The Ninety-Five Theses were written by Martin Luther in 1517. At the time of writing, Luther had devoted his life to Jesus Christ, and had become a monk. In his Theses, he expressed the idea that someone must be completely willing to commit penance in order for it to be legitimate, and Luther gave several reasons why he was critical of the sale of indulgences. He challenged the authority of the pope and other powerful positions of the church multiple times throughout his writings. Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses writing was very important in igniting the Protestant Reformation.

            One possible explanation might focus on the recurring theme of patricide in Christian doctrine.  Luther, in order to establish Protestantism as an independent theology must destroy it's parents: Catholicism and Judaism. This question, however, should be dealt with in it's own right in another paper. The fact remains that Luther's essay "Concerning the Jews and their Lies" was written and its historical impact must be dealt with.

Luther’s fundamental religious problem was the idea that the church was making people feel that they had to buy or seek salvation through the church. The development started when Luther was younger he was struck by lightning and called out to the church and said that if his life was spared he would become a monk. Sure enough since his life was spared he did as he promised. He was still struggling to understand what he need to do to be blessed with “godliness” the church taught him that it was through good deeds for the church. He was then asked to teach at a University and even though he did not want to do it he did it anyway for his fear of not doing what the church said overwhelmed him. Three important changes that Luther made to his 'new reformed ' Church were: writing hymns in German so people could sing praises to the Lord, allowing the clergies to get married, and having Lutheranism taught in the vernacular, also known as the common language.

Luther wrote about his ideas because he saw several faults in how the church was run. He didn't do anything for personal gain, but rather for the good of Christians as he thought the churches had taken away the bases of Christianity. For example, they started selling letter of indulgences, which is something he disagreed on majorly as it is never mentioned in the bible. Luther didn't think it was right that the church could judge you and grant you forgiveness if you paid them, and he thought the only one who could judge anyone was God himself. According to Luther, God didn't care about any letter of indulgences, only your actions.

Martin Luther was “committed to the idea that salvation could by reached through faith and by divine grace only” (History). He wrote the 95 Theses, which talked about his belief that faith alone could lead to salvation and his criticisms about the selling of indulgences. Luther was among the first to start questioning the Church and its authority over the people. He became very influential in the Christian community as he became the leader of the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther had a different belief system that many times went against and questioned the Roman Catholic Church as well as the Pope.

The 95 theses were written in 1517 and it was a list of 95 things of wrongdoings that Martin Luther didn’t like and that he thought was wrong in the Catholic Church; Luther didn’t like the wealth of the church. He also dint like the pope. Luther nailed his 95 theses on Wittenberg castle church doors. Luther was inviting academics for the disputation the power and efficacy of indulgences.

Luther wanted to separate from the church because the church leaders got to greedy for money. The priests and leaders of the catholic church started to make up things such as selling indulgences which was basically pay the church to be forgiven for your sins and your families sins. Document 4 says, “They[pastors] fatten on the sins of the people,” this shows that pastors only cared for the ‘fleece’ or money of the people rather than actually caring for them. Another example that shows that the catholic church cares for nothing but money is the fact that they got upset when people spent money on things that did not necessarily matter. Document 8 is proof that people were spending lots money on non holy things, the texts says, “So much money is going into the coffer of the vendor that new coins must be minted on the spot,”. Document 6 shows that priests were getting upset on how people were spending their money. The text says “Where is our gratefulness toward God...For so many enslave all their senses to delights…”. This made Luther want to create Lutheranism because he felt that religion should not be about how much money one has but rather their soul.

The church wasn 't happy about this and would normally kill anyone who protested against the catholic church but Martin Luther had a lot of allies. Meanwhile people are dying in the hundreds of thousands, People were walking from town to town whipping themselves to try and prove themselves to god but instead spreading the plague, also people were finally getting treated as people and feeling worth and getting paid a fair amount of money for all the work they were doing. In the middle all of this Martin luther continued to protest against the catholic church for selling these indulgences and relics that people thought would save them from going to hell or purgatory, by paying all this money they thought they could get a free pass and martin luther knew that this wasn 't true and started a new form of catholicism called lutheranism that was based around the idea that you can go to heaven by being a good person and having strong faith, not by paying all this money. Some people joined and some people didn 't so of course there were protest and obviously the church wasn 't happy about this

Martin Luther's contribution to the Church could easily be dismissed because he is well known as anti-Semitic. In truth, he was, as most people are, more complicated than this. Luther is a wonderful example of the Grace of God using imperfect people. Luther is history's best proponent of justification by grace, yet some of his views did not always reflect God's love. God has not changed, He still chooses the average person to advance His kingdom. And why shouldn't He, we are all He's got!

Peter’s Basilica. Then on October 31, 1517 it is speculated that Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses on the front doors of a university door. The reason for the massive spreading of the 95 Theses is because of the printing press. The printing press quickly spread the document throughout Germany. This was the start of what is known as the German Reformation. Martin Luther was eventually excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. Luther would always refuse to take back what he has said in his documents against the Roman Catholic Church. At the Edict of Worms, Martin Luther was declared a heretic and made him a wanted man. Martin Luther is one of the most important figures of the medieval Europe. This may be another reason the 95 Theses and other doctrines spread so well throughout Europe. The Roman Catholic Church was ringing Martin Luther’s names all throughout the public’s ears. The old saying “any publicity is good publicity” applies in this situation. People could see that Martin Luther was onto something. The 95 Theses were put into vernacular so that anyone could read them for their selves. He gave a voice to many people that would never have a voice and spoke out against the corruptions of the Roman Catholic Church. He gave way to reform throughout the church. Martin Luther and the 95 Theses also gave way to his own form of religion called Lutheranism.
