Early life of Saint Maximilian Kolbe
Maria Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894 in the kingdom of Poland, part of the Russian Empire. Saint Maximilian was baptized in the parish church called ''The Assumption Of The Virgin Mary'' in the Wloclawek diocese. His family was very poor, but he always kept a happy heart, even during the hardest times. His father, Juliusz Kolbe, was German and his mother, Maria Dabrowska, was Polish. His parents were always hardworking and religious, and they made sure to teach the children to follow God's will at all times. In 1914 his father was captured by the Russians and hanged for participating in a battle to free Poland. At the age of 12, Maximilian's life changed when he had a vision of the Blessed Virgen Mary. During his vision, he asked Our Lady what was to become of him. The Blessed Virgen Mary showed him two crowns, one white and the other one red. The white crown meant he was going to keep his purity, and the red crown meant he was going to become a martyr. He told Our Lady he would accept both. When he was 13 years old, he and his older brother entered the Franciscan Fathers Seminary in the polish city of Lvov, which was at that time occupied by Austria. Maximilian Kolbe attended Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He completed his studies in 1918 and was ordained a priest. Three years later, during the Second War, he was captured along with other friars and sent to concentration camps in Germany and Poland.
