In the year 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the “Declaration of Independence,” a document that changed the course of American history. During the time that the document was written, the colonies in America were controlled by Great Britain and were being treated unfairly. The goal of the document was to explain and inform the readers why the colonies chose to break away from Great Britain’s government and form their own. The document was not only an attempt to justify and explain the founding father’s actions, but it was a formal declaration to the king of England. It states the purpose and reasons for the colonist desire to dissolve the political bands and separate themselves from Britain. Jefferson wrote a straightforward, informative document that clearly defines the desires of the colonist and appeals to ethics, feelings, and reason. If the document had been written by a different author, it would have changed the history and ultimately the entirety of the United States.
