In the novel Uprising, by Margaret Peterson Haddix one of the main characters, Bella, chants “‘We will not be stupid girls. We will not be powerless girls. We will not be useless girls’” (330).Throughout the novel, the three girls: Bella, Jane, and Yetta, discover that being a woman in America during the 1900’s was not all what it was made out to be. All three girls face many challenges, yet Bella was very good at building herself back up after the hard times. When Bella receives the letter that reveals her family's death, she has to find Yetta, who is able to translate the letter for her. After finding Yetta and receiving the bad news, Jane took Bella home because she was hysterical. By leaving her comfort zone Bella changes because it causes her to find two girls that she trusted to read her family's death letter to her. Leaving her comfort zone and meeting Jane and Yetta also changed Bella because it led to her having people that she knew she could trust and count on through hard times. This changed Bella because if she would not have found these girls Bella would not have seen the brighter sides of things; for example Bella says to Yetta “spring” after Yetta makes the statement “what’s there to hope for now?” (Haddix 263). This quote explains that instead of giving up on everything Bella is going to keep thinking positive and not give in just yet. After Bella left her comfort zone she became emotionally stronger. Bella became emotionally stronger due to these girls because when she first came to America she always thought she could count on Pietro; however, when she found out that was false it was important that she found some trustworthy people she could count on. After escaping her comfort zone finding trustworthy people became much
Then she ran away. It took them two hours to pin her down and tag her (Russell 228).” This shows her wild/wolf side of her. This also shows how she was raised to know when to run and when to give up, and she never gave up. Secondly, here the author Russell gives us another example from the text where the pack worries about their sister because she will not change, "The pack was worried about Mirabella.
Another main point is that Bella relies only on men, the only people that are really active in Bella’s life is Edward, Jacob and Bella’s father. They protect her in everything that she does and she is always looking for a man’s approval. Also, Edwards is a pedophile and he is also abusive, Edward is a grown man falling for Bella when she was only 16. When it comes to the abuse, Edward makes it clear multiple times that he has to pay very close attention or he could crush her skull. The night of their wedding, they make love and Bella wakes with many bruises on her body not to mention how Edward dictates who she can hang
Women haven’t always had the freedom that they have today. Women were supposed to live a certain life even though sometimes they didn’t want to. They had to tend to their husbands at all time, stay home and do housework while still taking care of their children or being pregnant. Women were abused physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Although women were perceived to act and present themselves in a certain way, some young women went against the cult of the true woman hood not only to be different, but to escape he physical, emotional, and psychological abuse that they will or have encountered. In novels, The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Path and Lucy, by Jamaica Kincaid both young women have the similarity to rebel against the cult of true
This can be seen, specifically, once Edward rescues her from a truck. While everyone else around her blatantly disregarded the occurrence, and some even tried to talk her out of thinking about it, she continues to research the possibilities until she comes to the conclusion Edward is a vampire prior to him revealing that fact. Her friend’s compliance with the ‘social norm’ to ignore anything seemingly different makes Bella’s choices to interrogate the scenario seem increasingly significant. Bella’s nonconformity and self reliance would be supported by many transcendentalist thinkers, including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Thoreau. Thoreau states, "If a man does not keep pace with his companions perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.

The essentials of a vampire story are an older man representing corrupt values and a young innocent female that get destructed in order to continue the life force of the male. This can be applied to the Twilight series, as Edward uses Bella. Edward and Bella fall in love; stripping away her innocence, and is brought into the lifestyle of vampires. In the course of the movie Bella gets hunted and runs away; using all of her energy. She runs away from home, stripping her from her youth. Within the next few movies, Bella gets pregnant, destructing her body, and gives birth to Edwards baby in order to continue the life force of the male.
Bella was fighting for better treatment in her career. Then a fight happened. Yetta, being Bella’s friend, tried to help her, but failed. The author writes “Tell him that Yetta was really trying to help me, she didn’t do anything wrong, she shouldn’t be in that police wagon-”(Haddix 100). This quote from Uprising, shows how Bella took this situation.
In Jamaica Kincaid’s story, Girl, a mother is talking to her daughter about all the proper things she must do to be considered a good girl to her family and to the public, and when she grows up, a proper lady. She must follow the rules that are given to her by her own mother and by society. The mother also teaches the daughter how to act when things don’t go her way. She is told that along with being a proper lady, she must also be able to get what she wants and be independent. This story was written in the late 1970’s and gender roles, for women, back then were not being “followed” because women wanted equal opportunities (Women In the Workforce). “Gender stereotypes are beliefs regarding the traits and behavioral characteristics given to individuals on the basis of their gender” (Deuhr). This essay will discuss the gender roles that were given to women in the story, during the late 70’s, and in today’s society.
“Girl” is a short story in which the author, Jamaica Kincaid, unofficially presents the stereotypes of girls in the mid 1900s. Kincaid includes two major characters in the story “Girl”, they are the mother and the girl. Although the daughter only asks two questions in this story, she is the major character. The mother feels like her daughter is going in the wrong direction and not making the best decisions in her life. The whole story is basically the mother telling her daughter what affects her decisions will have in the future. The mother believes that because her daughter isn’t sitting, talking, cleaning, walking or singing correctly it will lead her to a path of destruction. “Girl” is a reflection of female sexuality, the power of family, and how family can help overcome future dangers.
Eventually, Bella and Edward had fallen in love with each other. Edward told her that he is a vampire. At this part of the movie the viewer already know he is and Bella has an idea that he is as well. But, it is an important part to the movie because it shows the viewer how Edward tells her how he really does not want to hurt her but it is hard for him because he can 't read her thoughts, Bella is not scared at all. But when the viewer watches the film they want to see Bella’s reaction and how Edward responds to it. This is a very meaningful part of the movie and was a great way to show how Bella wasn’t frightened that Edward was a vampire and how she trusted him greatly. Bella also knew that Edward would not harm her in any way. Even though Edward was not sure of himself that he had what it takes to be strong and not change Bella’s life forever, by turning her into his kind, a vampire.
“Little Girls with dreams become women with vision” (unknown). This quote expresses Jane’s entire life in the novel Jane Eyre written by the author Charlotte Brontë. The main character that is discussed in this book is Jane Eyre and she is trying to find herself despite being recognized as less than everyone else solely based on her gender and her poor place in nineteenth-century’s social class. Gender inequality is world wide problem with no end, dating back to the civil rights period to the present day. Mrs. Reed, John Reed, Mr Brocklehurst and Ms. Blanche Ingram, as well as many others are a prime example for this issue. For the reason being that they allow others’ mainly her son to not only treat her with disrespect but also torment Jane as well.
