March of Dimes Foundation is an organization that assists with financial support for premature babies. In the state of Alabama alone, there are 6,926 babies born preterm, 1,800 born with birth defects, and 500 babies die annually before reaching their first birthday. Your donation will make a huge difference in the lives of these families.

Then, the organization was comprised of volunteers and researchers in a partnership, and today the same holds true. The March of Dimes website states that their main mission for the organization is that “March of Dimes researches, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threat to their health (March of Dimes website).” The inevitable goal of course is to fight until prematurity and birth defects no longer exist.

St. Jude is known for being at the forefront of battling pediatric cancers. It was also the first hospital in Memphis where patients were integrated in the same room. St Jude had a large impact on nutrition in the United States. Physicians from the hospital created a volunteer health clinic to treat some of the poorer areas of Memphis. They made a major discovery. They found that a majority of the members in the community were malnourished. The director of the hospital decided that this was a major catastrophic disease and took action to create a research study. A news station decided to do a report on the program that happened to catch the attention of a senator. The senator then helped to create the Child Nutrition Act with the help of St Jude which led to the creation of the WIC program. Due to the cultural belief at that time, the relevant authorities closed the clinic. However, Sanger's vision led her to open another clinic in 1923 in Manhattan. As Sanger was giving contraceptives to women, she was also collecting data about the effectiveness and safety of every contraceptive. For week seven assignment, I chose the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes does incredible work with babies who are premature and they also focus on keeping mother’s healthy during pregnancy to prevent infant mortality. The March of Dimes was created in 1938 by Franklin D. Roosevelt to combat polio which was on the raise at that time.

The first issue that the Children’s Bureau focused on was infant and maternal death. This was a problem because there were not any standards for how a baby was supposed to be delivered. Prenatal and postnatal care were also not well-known; therefore, many mothers did not receive the care that they needed to make sure they were doing well before and after birthing a child. There are not many statistics that show how many infants and mothers died each year due to the little to no standards that were in place at the time, but about one in ten infants died within the first year of their life (“The story of..”). Julia Lathrop was the director of the Children’s Bureau. She was the person who brought the infant and maternal deaths issue to light.

It is our aim to improve overall patient outcomes and improve the quality of care across the lifespan. Numerous support services are available in the community to address preterm infants and their families. One support organization is the March of Dimes program. This organization is involved in research and development for improving the health of infants and children by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Through the years, the organization continue to "focus efforts on addressing disparities and improving equity in their communities with programs focused on specific populations, including African-American, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific Islander and Native American" (March of Dimes, 2017 ).

The Prevention and Public Health Fund was formed to improve health care quality and improve the investment in public health by the Affordable Care Act. Funding is distributed to many great Agencies to support research and programs to improve health care in our communities. A few agencies receiving funding that caught my eye were the Alzheimer’s disease Prevention Education and Outreach, Fall Prevention, and Hospitals Promoting Breastfeeding. Taking a deeper look at these programs we will learn how much money they are allocated and how they are impacting our healthcare. In years to come these programs can continue to grow with the appropriate amount of funding and may have a big impact on the future of health care.
