The skills needed to be successful in today's workforce have changed somewhat for the better and somewhat for the worse, depending on the job. At some places that people are hired it seems like they hardly have to have any skills in order to get the job. Other places require a lot of skills before someone can even be hired and certain degrees must be obtained and tests must be taken. Fast food restaurants, grocery stores, and other restaurants should be a lot more strict about the types of people that they hire. According to O*NET OnLine, the skills I need to be successful in my career path include critical thinking, reading written and oral comprehension, active listening, complex problem solving, writing, speaking, time management and social perspectives among others. All of these are skills that I have enhanced in colloquium. This book puts into words the experiences and struggles that many of my fellow peers, and myself go through in order to pursue success and happiness in an ever changing, downright confusing time in history. I think that this book although outdated, touches on this evolving idea of pursuing a career that will allow for a greater impact on the world. Chapter 3 “Job-Hopping or Job-Shopping in a Do-it-Yourself Economy” discusses this generation's desire to pursue a career that gives back to the community and strives to leave a positive impact on the world. I found this chapter to be most interesting.

In the brand-new era, myriad problems concerning work are worth contemplating cautious due to improving working productivity, and the issue of whether employers should pay the most attention to enhance their employees' skills has recently come into focus. An exceedingly great number of people deem the skill is the most essential for workers, whereas others hold an opinion that the increase of one's skill cannot reach the goal on the whole of bringing benefits to the company. The latter one, from my perspective, should be wiser.

This skill has developed through my years at school, but more so in college when I had to learn to how to meet deadlines, arrive on time for lessons and in general, driving myself to achieve specific grades in order to enter university. In addition, my exceptional communication skills make it possible for me to express my ideas to others in a clear and concise manner, enabling me to work effectively in social environments. I do believe that skills in today’s work environment have changed. Getting a job used to be based solely on your Interpersonal skills. Being social and knowing the right people or being in the right place at the right time would give you endless opportunities for employment. While I still believe this is true, employees are looking for more skills. One question during interviews includes your knowledge of the job/position and what the employee can bring to the company. Having basic computer, math, reading and writing skills are also important. With technology improving, these basic skills are necessary. Other skills needed to be successful in jobs include; communication, work ethics, ability to adapt, taking responsibility, being organized, critical thinking and being a good role model.
