We, as Americans, could do so much more, not only as individuals, but as a nation, to make sure that we have better health, but specifically, psychological health. We must start in the mind before we can do anything for our physical health, because the brain controls our bodies, and without strong mental health, you are in danger of becoming sick. There are also many political things that we can do as well to make sure we don't go crazy when it comes to debating and spewing thoughts out at other people. First of, I'd like to talk about obesity, its troubles, and how we can hopefully fix this problem. Nearly all prejudicial attitudes are now taboo in America. Sixty years ago, it might have been acceptable to deny someone a job or service …show more content…
A very large study has found a surprisingly strong link between the amount of shut-eye people get and their risk of becoming obese. Those who got less than four hours of sleep a night were 73 percent more likely to be obese than those who got the recommended seven to nine hours of rest, scientists discovered. Those who averaged five hours of sleep had 50 percent greater risk, and those who got six hours had 23 percent more. There you have it. Just by getting more sleep, you can change your health and life drastically. If Americans could just try to get some more sleep every night, they could lose weight, and even get out of depression. Sleep is a very vital part of your psychological health, and many people do not get enough. If people could make a point to set aside at least 8 hours of sleep, then they would feel so much better. Another thing Americans can do is talk out their problems. Many people keep their feelings bottled up inside of them and don?t let them out because they think that it would show weakness. But that isn?t true. There is always someone to talk to that will listen to your thoughts and help you with whatever you are feeling. Maybe it isn?t your family or friends, but you could talk to a therapist or counselor who will listen to you. Letting out feelings is like popping a hole in a beach ball. The air comes out slowly, but it will come out. Letting out your feelings makes you feel less tense and stressed out by the energy inside
Sometimes I think that sleeping isn’t important because I thought that sleep wouldn’t help your body. Well I was wrong to say that because it does help your body. The amount of sleep you get each day impacts over the course of your life. I was asked if sleep had a huge impact on your health. Well my answer is yes it does have a huge impact. Some people don’t have enough hours of sleep, some have too much, and some don’t know how much their suppose to sleep. Despite the fact that some people think that sleep isn’t important, I’m going to prove that sleep is important
During and prior to the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, the American political system saw the formation of political parties as the republic began to mature. Nevertheless, most Americans did not participate in the elections due to property restrictions to voting. Up until 1828, the states chose the presidential candidates through popular votes. Originally, measures such as the Electoral College and state representatives, put in place in the 1700s, functioned to limit participation in the democratic process in order to prevent excessive influence by ordinary people. This changed, however, with advent of the Jacksonian era of democracy. The son of Scottish-Irish immigrant farmers, Andrew Jackson’s ascension to power marked a change in American
Furthermore, these individuals subside the average person due to their obesity; a disease that affects 70% of American adults. Consequently, this disease causes an increasing amount of heart diseases, strokes, high blood pressure, and diabetes in our current community. It is agreed upon our society that these individuals who suffer of obesity have been looked down upon and are put at risk of discrimination regardless of how hard we try to end it. To make the problem worse than it already
Every four years, Americans go to the polls and vote. Experts say approximately 23% of America have unregistered voters. Voting is vital. Every single vote counts on election day. The Presidential Election brings out the most Americans. Democratic and Republican parties go head to head in the race to become the nation’s president. In 2008, the presidential hopeful will be Barack Obama. He will provide citizens with affordable healthcare insurance. Obama will give tax breaks to the working class and improve the education systems.

The idea that sleeping for less than five hours or more than nine hours proves to have a negative effect on the human body. Sleep deprivation has a closely related link to memory retention and can cause a person to have trouble with daily task. “Everything is just starting for you. Your life hasn’t even begun yet.” – Adisa Trebinčević (221) When citizens in war-torn homelands aspire for better lives, they commonly have to look outward and travel across the world to follow their dream. For Kenan Trebinčević and Amal Abulheja, their dream wasn’t necessarily to depart their country, but with recurring violence and trauma, once opportunities arose, both fled to the United States. Respectively, you can say their lives hadn’t started until they arrived in America. Coming to the United States remarkably changed their lives forever. For the purpose of this essay, I will be sharing the similarities and differences of the initial experience of Kenan and Amal becoming “American.”
After mid-1990s (Swerdlow, 5), people from all around the world, including legal and illegal, searched for American dream and landed in the same location – United States. According to Changing America, “more than 60 percent of immigrants have come from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Latin America” (Swerdlow, 5), showing America’s high schools - such as J. E. B. Stuart (Swerdlow, 5) - are made up by difference races and ethnics. By looking at the picture on page eight, it demonstrates America’s distinctiveness of population.
Obesity is one of America’s problems that we struggle with every day. Even other countries see America for obesity and how much junk food and pop we consume. Our first lady is even trying to help fix this problem. Schools are gaining healthy lunches and changing up a few things in how make what school’s eat. That’s a great step, but you can always avoid school lunches. I know that people can’t force people to eat healthy. But I realize that how we are is really not anyone’s fault, except ours. Obesity is how much self control people have and how we handle our food options.
Obesity is a big topic in American society, it has grown over the years and it has become very well known. It has become an American concern and the food industry has been an easy target to blame for this “epidemic”. The truth to this is that it can be easy to blame the fast food industry, but the real truth it is, that obesity has become what it is now because our society has let that happened; the government, the citizens, the food industry's. They have all played an important role to what it is now obese.
“Obesity affects nearly 1 in 3 American adults” according to The National institute of Health. Obesity clearly is a common problem the U.S. and will permanently alter our family dynamic. It had changed our social behavior and our culture as a country. These changes stem from are weight discrimination, negatively influencing other family member’s lifestyles, and an over-eating culture.
The United States of America has been dubbed “the land of the free”. The migrants that migrated to America came for a better lifestyle. Because of this, America is a melting pot of cultures. Living in America means one has the ability to freely go about doing something, and each American has a set of laws that will protect and help them. An American is one who has freedom.
Many of Americans today do not take the time to realize that our nation is little by little falling apart. Our leaders are corrupt, our environment is being destroyed, and there are thousands of children being born each day. The three major social problems facing the American citizens in the 21st century are births to unmarried woman, being able to trust or government and or leaders, and lastly destroying the environment.
1. Many never pay attention and really don’t see how important it is to get enough sleep and the proper hours. Although exercise and nutrition are essential for having health and happiness, sleep is also very important. Not getting the correct amount of sleep directly affects mental sharpness, productivity, emotional balance, creativity, physical vitality, and managing weight.
The TED Talk video that I watched was Why do we sleep by Russel Foster. This TED talk was about why we need sleep and how getting less than the suggested amount affects the brain. There are three main reasons why we need sleep; restoration, energy conservation, and brain function. Only certain genes are turned on when you sleep so you need to sleep in order for those genes to turn on and allow you other genes to be restored, while sleeping you save about 110 calories, sleep helps enhance creativity, and your brain is less likely to retain information if you’re sleep deprived and trying to cram information. On average a teen needs 9 hours of sleep, in the 1950s the average teen was getting 8 hours of sleep, today on average teens are getting 5 hours of sleep, which is half the amount that we need. If you’re not receiving the amount of sleep that you need your body will uncountable got into micro-sleeping which will happen to at least 31% of drivers in their lifetime.
In between 1980 and 2002, adults have doubled their obesity, and children have tripled. This has caused discriminations. Discrimination on obesity has spread throughout the countries. The opponents think it is not okay to say negative things towards obese people, while others think it is not right. Because there are so many discriminations, and opinions it is proving that many people are affected. Women have a lot of discrimination too. There is research to show these sides of the issue.
