Bees are kept for several reasons. Honey bees are mostly kept for commercial use or just a hobby. These bees are called Apis mellifera, or European honey bees. These bees have a presence all over the world. They produce honey as well as pollinate crops. The most popular subspecies are Italian bees, A. mellifera ligustica. These bees are usually orange or bright yellow and can amass a sizeable population in the spring. Their way of feeding is to rob other colonies of their honey. Another popular bee is named Apis mellifera scutellata, or the killer bee as most people know it, it is also known as the Africanized bees.

Establishing a beehive is not as easy as capturing a few bees buzzing around your flower garden and expecting them to take to your hive. From their tremendous hives to their venomous stings to their countless hours of vigorously pollinating, honeybees are amazing. There are seven types of radical honeybees around the world.1 Humans are responsible for most deaths of these humble creatures. Little do we know that our harmful actions against honeybees could change the world forever.    Honeybees currently reside on every continent in the world, except for Antarctica.1 Honeybees live in hives and are widely known around the world for their ingenious production of honey. What honeybees do for their hive is dependent on their gender; females are workers and males are drones.5 The queen bee is another type of bee along with the worker bees and the drones, the queen bee is a bit bigger than the others and their is one of them in each colony.5 The hives are usually created by the bees themselves. In these hives they also store the contents of honey as well as the honey itself.5 Many beekeepers keep special hives to collect honey.5

In the process of making honey, the bee must first gather nectar from a flower or any other blooming vegetation such as honeysuckles or rosemary. The scavenger bee leaves the hive and will travel within a five-mile radius from the hive in search of nectar. Once the bee finds nectar it likes, the bee uses its proboscis, which is a straw-like structure at the bees mouth, to suck up all the nectar it can. A bee has two stomachs. As the nectar is collected, the bee takes all of the nutrients from the honey for itself, and the rest of the nectar that is unneeded is sent to the bees second stomach.

The main reason for keeping bees is to gather the honey they make. Honeybees use nectar, the thick juice made by flowers, to make honey. Then, the bees put the honey in a cell, a kind of tiny box, in what is called a honeycomb. A beekeeper keeps the bees happy and healthy so they will make more honey.

All three caste members go through four stages of development; egg, larva, pupa and adult. The queen lays eggs in worker and drone cells; fertilized eggs in can develop into workers or queens and unfertilized eggs develop into drones. While in the larva stage a honeybee is fed royal jelly, after third day the larva is fed beebread a mixture of honey and pollen. Nine days after hatching the larva is fully grown and stops feeding, this is when a cocoon is spun around the larva. During this time the adult body structures are formed. Once it has transformed into an adult, it is ready to emerge. A queen can live up to 5 years sometimes longer and only mates once in her lifetime. She is created at the decision of worker bees by feeding the larva only royal honey. On the sixteenth day from the time the egg was laid the new virgin queen will tear back the cap from her cell and emerge with her tongue stuck out begging for food. Soon after she has been fed by workers she will crawl out of the cell to dry. When the virgin queen has completely dried and gathered her strength she will make a shrill noise and wait for a response from other potential queens who hasn’t emerged from their cells. Once the virgin queen has received response from the others she will then seek them out, tear back the cap from their cell and eliminate
