1. I am picking up when Mai Thi Hiep (Heidi) is visiting her biological family in Vietnam and her siblings are talking telling her she needs to send money to help support her mother. At this point I feel Heidi is experiencing the dissonance stage, stage 2 of the (R/CID) model. She is attempting to find herself by returning to her homeland she has forgotten so much about. Since Heidi has been raised in the United States since the age of 7 and raised as a white child and told to never tell anyone she was Vietnamese she holds these values. Therefore I feel she is also experiencing Helms Disintegration stage by experiencing anxiety, guilt and anger (Erford, Hays, Crockett and Miller 2011). The anxiety Heidi is experiencing while her siblings are

Hi Tatum, I found your post intriguing because you mentioned how you would not criticize him and explain to the resident why he could not smoke in the facility. I think that was a good idea. I also like how you said that you would speak in his “reality”. For the second scenario, we had similar ideas however, I did not think about explain to the resident why it would be best to take a bath. In my post, I mentioned that I would let him decide if he wanted to or not which could possibly back fire. Overall, we had some similarities and differences but I enjoyed your post.
I am pretty impressed by Jose’s grandmother, M’ Ma Tine, who raised Jose and took care of him alone. She spent her entire life working hard to earn an opportunity for Jose to change his life.

Ha's mother is also being affected negatively towards the war because as said on page 47 "You deserve to grow up where you don't have to worry about half a bite of sweet potato." Another way Ha’s mother is worried about her children future in America is how Ha's mother has a job dropping off clothes on the weekends and she claims that "Hardly anybody buys anymore, They can hardly afford food.” Another way that Ha's mother is being affected negatively towards the wars is how she misses her husband. Ha misses her father because she wants the Permanent Frowns removed from her mother. Ha and her family have to make a decision, whether to stay in Vietnam where there is a war or go to America where it’s safe.
Thi saw how her own life had been affected by her parent’s past and saw that they were never fully happy with each other but she sees that there were many external factors that put them in their situations. Thi recognizes that it was never her parent’s fault, when she emphasizes, “I understand enough of Vietnam’s history to know that the ground beneath my parents’ feet had always been shifting…so that by the time I was born, Vietnam was not my country at all, I was only a small part of it. What worried me…was whether I would pass along some gene for sorrow or unintentionally inflict damage I could never undo” (Bui 326-327). Now that Thi has her own family and a life separate from her parents, she has a greater understanding of why her family was the way that is was.
The betrayals led to many issues both culturally and relationally that would later affect the Lee’s and the care of their daughter. For instance, as a culture group, the Hmong’s are very persistent and “do not like to take orders; that they do not like to lose; that they

“keep her where she belongs” or “So, the harder the wife works the cuter she looks!” the truth is that ads like these were very common in the mid-20th century. Many companies used the existing gender roles to appeal to consumers, sex sells and so does gender. The 20th century was the rise of gender advertisement. Since the 20th century was the era of consumerism, it’s natural to think advertisement played a huge role in the popular culture and had a huge influence on how people viewed the world. The belief that women are domestic creatures who always must be obedient to the male figures of their lives was never a new concept in the 20th century. What was new in this era of mass consumption was utilizing gender roles as a marketing technique to make a certain product more desirable for the American Society. During the 20th century, American popular culture, specifically advertising, reinforced the existing gender roles for women as the homemaker, furthermore, creating a constraint on the socially acceptable roles for women which stayed prevalent for many years.
