NERVE is a New York Times Best Selling novel by Jeanne Ryan that has recently been converted into a major motion film. The story follows Vee, a senior in high school, notorious for being a shy behind-the-scenes-type-a-girl who becomes sick of being outshined by her friends. On a whim, Vee and enters NERVE; A GAME LIKE TRUTH OR DARE MINUS THE TRUTH. WATCHERS PAY TO WATCH, PLAYERS PLAY TO WIN CASH AND GLORY. Everything was harmless at first. But one challenge leads to another, and the prizes are simply too enticing to resist. Determined to stay in the game and win the grand prize, Vee and her partner Ian continue the competition -- until things turn sinister, deadly, and suddenly every resource for help is involved with the “game”.

By the end, the players turn money crazy, turn against each-other, split into teams, lose their minds and basically try and to kill each-other off. Similar to William Golding (Author of Lord of the Flies) Jeanne Ryan wanted to convey how broken society is, how quickly people will abandon their morals, and the lengths people will go to for money. This is why NERVE features an allusion to Lord of the Flies. In Contrast to Golding, she emphasized on how non-life threatening situations turn you into a savage. An example of this is when Vee was pleading for her life. “Don’t do it Ty. This is totally Lord of the Flies. NERVE wants to turn us into savages. Show them that you’re your own man” (Jeanne Ryan, 224)
I truly believe that everyone will grow/benefit in one shape or form by reading this story. Although it is just a common teen-fiction novel, it features real life situations that leave you with important questions about the world and makes you rethink the actions you take in your personal
