The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is a drama about two lovers named Romeo and Juliet, who love each other but are not allowed to be together due to their families’ feud between Juliet’s parents, Lady Capulet and Lord Capulet, and Romeo’s parents, Lord Montague and Lady Montague. In the end, Romeo and Juliet end up killing themselves out of devotion and everlasting love for each other. Lady Capulet, Lord Capulet, Lady Montague, and Lord Montague are responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because the Capulets arranged Juliet’s marriage to Paris against her will and contributed to the feud between the families by fostering an environment of violence, and because the Montagues were negligent in addressing the family feud, allowing the feud to escalate. For example, Juliet drinking a vile given by Friar Lawrence so that she could pretend to die, and sneak away with Romeo once she woke up. If Lady Capulet and Lord Capulet didn’t escalate and continue this feud, then Romeo and Juliet would have been able to feel together, and would have never killed themselves. But it was not only Lady Capulet and Lord Capulet who were responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, as Romeo’s parents, Lord Montague and Lady Montague, were also responsible. Lord Montague and Lady Montague were negligent in addressing the family feud, allowing the feud to escalate. Despite their awareness of the feud, Lord Montague and Lady Montague fail to take any meaningful action to address or mitigate it. Throughout the play, the Montagues are passive observers of the ongoing conflict.
