In the beginning of the Poem, she is very uncomfortable with her new husband and was very unhappy with him. As their time together got longer she realized she was in love with him. While she was married to him she learned to be happier and laugh more. Once he left for his long journey through the Gorges of Ch'u-T'ang, she was heart broken. There are many similarities between the girl in the poem and more modern day girls. Their similarities start with how both of them will be angry and be uncomfortable with their husbands that they were forced to marry. Another similarity is how eventually they will learn to love their husbands and will miss them when they're gone. Some evidence that shows me that she is happier with him is when the poem says
First of all, this poem is written in a first person’s point of view. She begins by telling the reader the cause of her pain and suffering – her “beloved sweetheart bastard” which gravitates into a sense of bitterness and vengeance/retribution. In addition to that, the use of
What makes this text so important and remembered is that it provides the voice of a woman, which is extremely rare for this time. As said perfectly here,“Perhaps the major difference between The Wife’s Lament and the other two is that it offers us an early example of the female voice in poetry…”(Droxonian). The theme of relationships and their effects is explained in this line from The Wife’s Lament,“Full oft the lack of my lord seizes me cruelly here.”(32-33). The speaker of the poem, after being kicked out of her home and dumped in the woods, is crippled by the loss of her husband. The effect of relationships is also demonstrated after she stops referring to him with a loving tone in the last stanza. She switches her view from love to hate after realizing how much he must be hurting as well. The way relationships affect us can be pain in the heart and soul, or switching out feelings from love directly to
Xuan Huong Ho was born in 1772 and passed away in 1822, is one of Vietnam’s greatest classical poets and was dubbed “The Vietnamese Queen of Nom poetry” by a Vietnamese prominent modern poet Xuan Dieu; she also married as early as all feudal daughters twice, but both of her marriages were not perfect (“Hồ Xuân Hương”). Perhaps the poet wrote this poem inspired by her own life.
In the beginning, the boat this girl is in is being is tossed on the sea, and comparing this to her restless feelings of being forced to be with this man that she does not want to be with. In the next stanza, she described the she found that her brothers “were angry with [her]” (Book of Songs). This girl clearly feels that her brothers are not at her defense as she does not believe that she should be forced to marry a man of her choice. It also shows that she may potentially be doing something that is going against their family beliefs, as her entire family is angry at her. There is a clear sad mood in this first song because she expresses that she would rather be with someone much more desirable, and that she is not fond of this chosen person. The second song, called I Beg You, Zhong Zi, is about a girl who loves but her family does not appreciate her choice. In the first stanza, she clearly express that she loves this man, but she tells him not “break the windows [they] planted” or else her family will be angry. This means that her family is more important than her lover, as she prevents her lover from entering because she does not want to anger her family. The third song, called Splendid, shows a relationship between a man and a woman. The women in this song describes how splendid, strong and magnificent this man she met was. She clearly shows true fondness towards this man she meet “between the hills of Nao” (Book of Songs). The fourth song, called High
The women from the poem decided to stay in a hopeless relationship. She imagined it different, not that boring
This is a complete contrast within the poem. At the beginning she was travelling South, was pregnant and was relatively happy, now she is returning North, isn't pregnant and is depressed.
The lady in the poem described herself as a old lady who doesn’t look good anymore, and she is questioning the person she loves will he still love her when she is old and ugly. This poem makes me feel sad. Because the lady talk about all the problems she will go through after she's old. And she is scared that her lover will not love her anymore after she get old because she won’t be pretty .
These two works are both poems, the first (Poem A) having a regular rhyming pattern and the second (Poem B) with no apparent rhyme. In both cases there are deep cultural assumptions about the gender of the author. In Poem A the speaker seems to be a woman, since it is the daughter who goes back to her parents' house and takes care of them, whereas in Poem B the author is a man, because it is assumed that it is the man who goes away and then calls home.
Death is the major speaker of this poem, its persona shows how cruel and violent it can be, however she also speaks of getting everything out of life you can before death. Starting with line twenty three of the poem she begins talking about living a full life before death, "When it 's over, I want to say all my life/I was a bride married to amazement/I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms." (23-25). Being a bride married to amazement is a comparison to commitment, being with the same person every day. However in this case with a lifestyle instead. Doing amazing and memorable things every possible day you can, not letting life pass you by. This also fits perfectly with the next few lines
Her tone throughout the poem makes it sound like she is going through a lot; she is not happy and she is very hurt. The way she uses the type of specific words in her writing that gives you that type of idea and imagination. A specific word that she uses throughout her poem is Dreary. Dreary is defined as dull, sad, boring and/or sorrowful. That key word now makes sense and relates a lot to the tone throughout the poem. That gives you a better imagination and better view especially knowing what that words means. One would use that word to explain a lot of sadness and anger they have inside. Later on, she also compares a frog to be a somebody. Frogs are usually known for their jumping abilities and their loud croaking sounds. Frogs are not afraid and they basically do what they want to do. So she compares the frog to that person because that person is basically trying to do what they want and jump up and be loud so people can hear them and know that they are somebody. She somehow and only rhymes ‘frog’ and ‘bog’. A bog is a muddy and wet ground and frogs usually live in those environments. But a bog cannot support a heavy body and it can get stuck so that also relates to the poem. In the poem one is stuck as a
From the very begging “The sun sets in molten gold. The evening clouds from a jade disk,” it is “natural” but wrong for us to speculate that this poem is really about “everlasting joy” filled in Linan (Southern Song’s capital). On the contrary, she then directly expresses her sadness by “This feast of Lanterns should be joyful. The weather is calm and lovely. But who can tell if it will be followed by wind and rain?”, with details like “A sad flute plays Falling Plum Blossoms” supporting the expression of her nostalgia that “I remember the happy days in the old capital.” Then she declined her friend’s invitation, preferred to stay beyond the curtains and listened to talk and laughter she could no longer share. Apparently, this poem vividly depicts the contradictory situation between the happiness in the city and the sadness on her mind and it creates an independent and stubborn female image in a period when women’s social and familial status was relatively menial. Qingzhao even aggressively criticized the rulers of escaping to the south instead of fighting against Jin. Not only her writing style became bold, audacious, and mighty, but also her personality became indomitable — she had a divorce with her second husband who abused her, which is hardly seen in Song times when women are suppressed to a state that it is illegal for women to sue their husbands. Basically, Li Qingzhao displays her strong female image not only in her writings
Li Qingzhao, born in 1084 in Zhangqiu, China, during the Song Dynasty, is regarded as China’s greatest woman poet. Born to a mother whose grandfather worked as a prime minister and a father who was a notable prose writer and professor, Li was fortunate enough to become an educated woman, and had the opportunity from a young age to experiment with and forge her poetic identity through her own drafting of ci (lyrical) and shi (traditional) poems. Li was also able to compare these poems with those written by friends of her father, which was considered very bold for a woman to do during a time in China when most women were uneducated and expected to be mere housekeepers. Naturally, Li also used her poetry as a means of expressing her emotions, through which she often reflected upon her feelings of her marriage to husband Zhao Mingcheng and her life as a whole. Through the poems included in Li Ch’ing-Chao Complete Poems by Kenneth Rexroth and Ling Chung, one can clearly see the changes in Li Qingzhao’s emotional state, namely throughout her youth, her time apart from her husband, and after her husband’s death.
The poem “The River-Merchant’s Wife: A Letter” author Li Po has shown this phenomenal story about a wife waiting for the return of her husband. It starts the livelihood of a wife being stubborn in the first year of marriage, however, regrets spending quality time with her husband. Eventually, time has gone by so fast resulting the husband to leave on a long journey. Throughout the absence of the husband, the wife is felt depressed or lonely without having him right by her side. Po has left the story open minded for readers to think what would happen next, hence inspiring many others who have felt the same as the wife did. As you may know by now, the theme that portrays this poem is a sense of depression and loneliness. Not only it illustrates the feeling of being unattached, but it also shows the importance of valuing time. The interpretation of being alone in my words means that only one person in your life is the only one to cure your lonesome. For this reason, the state of being isolated or depressed has done a lot to her, time is a cherishable moment, and the femininity of the poem was written by a guy.
However, in this poem the woman has been through way more than what she signed up for. Due to these detrimental experiences, it has caused her to have this lack of freedom from her family, feeling stuck in misery because of her unwanted significant other and feeling betrayed by the ones who she thought loved her the most. In conclusion, the moral of this poem to me is to speak up for what you believe in despite if you have an army standing behind you or you conquer the situation on your own. Either way, life is too short to not live your life the way you want
It seems that the parents had little appreciation for their daughter’s achievements and doings all this while. The mother only wish to see her being her mother’s pride and joy, while in his father’s dream, she is the one who will help the family, maybe even being the provider for the family. This is a burden being carried by the girl that made her worked very hard. Sadly, she had the urge to apologize through the writing of the poem, as she failed the tasks, getting disapprovals and disappointments that made an impact on her. She thought her hard works were not good enough, and she was not strong enough to overcome anymore failures, disapproval and
