It is true that people with Attention Deficit Disorder struggle in school or with everyday situations but they can adapt and learn ways to use this disability to their advantage. There are many people that are and can become very successful despite having Attention Deficit Disorder. Explaining attention deficit disorder is not easy, there are a lot of myths and controversy about this disorder. I know first-hand the struggles and the controversy surrounded by Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) because I was diagnosed when I was an adult. Some people might not believe that it is a true disorder or that it only affects children, it is real and does actually exist. It is not only just a childhood disorder it does not discriminate against age, race or gender. In order to have a better understanding of this complex disorder, it is important to become aware of its characteristics, causes, and treatments. A detailed analysis will include information and the struggles of living, coping, and managing A.D.D. It can be difficult and very frustrating not being able to comprehend or understand things that seem so simple to most other people. Following simple directions, trouble understanding a story, hard time staying organized, constantly late, forgetting things, can’t sit still through a lecture, daydreaming, unable to focus completely on a certain subject or task, not able to finish tasks in school or everyday situations pretty much sums up a person that may be struggling with ADD.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder otherwise known as ADHD is a common condition that affects kids and can continue into adulthood. Some of the effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are problems paying attention, unable to follow directions, and easily bored or frustrated with any tasks. These types of behaviors are generally common in children, but they occur more often than usual and are more severe in children with ADHD. The behaviors that are common with ADHD interfere with a child's ability to function at school and at home when they need to be paying attention. Adults with ADHD have a difficult time with organizational skills, goal setting, time management, and employment. They may also have problems with relationships, self-esteem, and addictions.

Living with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) can be complex and no two individuals are exactly alike. Symptoms and problems are often unique and may vary in type, number and intensity from person to person. (Akron General) Some indicators suggestive of ADD are: Being easily distracted, forgetting things, procrastination, difficulties making decisions, verbal impulsiveness, expressing thoughts in speech or in writing, having periods of depression or low self esteem, frequently late or rushed, reading comprehension or retention, emotionally sensitive, easily upset, low frustration tolerance, easily bored, impulsive spending, personal or family history of substance abuse, depression or anxiety, strong need to have things their way and a intense need for excitement.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is an anxiety disorder that affects the behavior of many people. ADHD symptoms such as impulsiveness and inattentiveness may begin in childhood and continue into adulthood. Almost 60% of children who are diagnosed with ADHD remain with this symptom through adulthood. Interpreted into simpler terms, about eight million adults in the U.S. have this life-affecting indication throughout their lives (http://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/guide/adhd-adults). In order for someone to be considered ADHD, abnormal behaviors including lack of focus must last for at least six months in two environments or more. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not just another condition that can be looked down upon, but
I have lived with ADHD my entire life and have had many people tell me it’s a fake condition. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that starts debates from every angle and point of view. Sometimes the arguments can get very heated. Debates involve issues such as, its causes, and how to deal with it. This research talks about these debates to try and bring an easier and more simplified view towards the condition itself.
When most people sit down in class they seldom think about the amount of effort that is subconsciously exerted just to focus on what is being said. Those who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, better known as ADHD, are constantly reminded of the daunting task that is focusing. Living with ADHD is a fatiguing task, that has adverse psychological effects on those who suffer from the disorder. The inability to focus accompanies ADHD, which opens the pathway for other complications that carry a heavy burden. These complications lower self-esteem and can generate complications amongst friends and family.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be described as a disorder that affects the central nervous system (CNS). At the current time, the cause of ADHD is still unknown (Mohammadi & Akhondzadeh, 2007). It is considered one of the greatest prevalent chronic health disorders that affect children (ages less than or equal to 17) and rates continue to rise (Mohammadi & Akhondzadeh, 2007). Presently, ADHD has been medically managed by two categories of medications which can be classified as stimulants or nonstimulants. According to the Texas Children’s Medication Algorithm Project (CMAP) (2007) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2015), stimulants continue to be first line choice in treating ADHD and show a
Along with many other psychiatric disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one among several recognized by both the psychiatric and medical communities. The main treatment for this disorder is medication that can be used with or without behavioral therapy. A study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health came to the conclusion that
“ADHD: we think more things before breakfast than most people think all day” (“We Think…, 2012). “Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of disorders in which the development of the central nervous system is disturbed. These disruptions can include developmental brain dysfunction, which can manifest as impaired motor function, impaired learning, impaired language or non-verbal communication” (“Neurodevelopmental disorders,” 2015). Throughout my life, I have struggled with paying attention in class. In middle school, my parents thought it was my fault for not trying hard in school. They never got on to me about my grades because they assumed I was going to mature. But what they did not understand is that I have a common case of Attention Deficit Disorder. I remember my freshman year so vividly. I think it was because I had to face my first rude awakening in school. My US history teacher, Mr. Brown was a man that I looked up to and admired. He portrayed his lectures with much passion and enthusiasm. I was able to absorb the material because of his teaching style. I remember being eager to tackle my first test because I truly knew the information. But during the test, I
Face to face, I sat in front of a person whose words terrified me. His blackened eyes intimidated me. That well rounded man in a white coat spoke so diligently about my “issues”. He soon diagnosed me with an attention deficit disorder. My brain froze with fear and at that moment all my dreams and hopes were shattered into a million pieces. The feeling of being worthless and hollow overwhelmed me. In my head, everything was over. In reality, every door to success had just been opened. Painful events had to occur in my life in order for me to realize how strong of an individual I was. Yet with time, tears, effort, and most of all the support of my AVID teacher, I overcame the anxiety I had due to bullying.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has made a negative impact a strong among the younger population. Those who classify as having ADHD are often seen as being disruptive, distracting during class and unable to pay attention. This behavior will not only impact the child, but as well as the family of the child, their peers and along with other factors too. For those in various settings, those don’t often realize the main causes of what indicates certain behaviors in the classroom and other locations. As a helping professional, this would have an awareness for everyone to effectively address the needs of the person. By seeing what the root of this behavior is caused by, we can then determine what else can be done to limit those symptoms
