Many things contribute to the functions of humanity. Literature, philosophy, religion, music, and art offer many ideas and theories that shape our existence. The following essay will be discussing topics of personal religious practices, personal art and literature preferences, and benefits that can be gained through humanities courses.
To begin, there is a wide amount of religions being practiced today. People come to practice religion or philosophies in different ways. Raised in a Christian home, traditionally the Bible was used as a guide on how one shall live their life to serve the one and only God. Becoming a Christian was influenced by family’s beliefs, however as an adult the decision to become a Christian, apart from relational influences, was easy. The Bible states 10 commandments to abide by which has guided my life on a daily basis. Some commandments largely recognized are “thou shalt not kill”, “thou shalt not commit adultery”, and “though shalt not steal” (Exodus 20:13-15). My morals and self-regulating rules are derived from the Bible. Christianity has influenced decision making personally by giving a greater reason to do good and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Proverbs 21:21 states “whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.” This Bible verse provides comfort and reason to be a good person. As a Christian, recognizing that not everyone shares the same belief is vital, yet it is preferred to have friends and family who share the same

The Western religions, Christianity and Judaism even had the same moral codes and that is the Ten Commandments (Thrall). These Commandments also known as the Decalogue include: You Shall have One God and no one else; You shall have no idols; You shall not use God’s Name in vain; You shall keep the Sabbath day holy; You shall honor your father and mother; You shall not kill; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not lie against your neighbor; You shall not covet anything of your neighbors. In these religions you will be permitted into heaven if you follow all the rules (Wikipedia). There is a very similar list of moral codes in the Eastern religions called the eightfold path. The laws of this path involve: You must have the right view, You must have the right resolve, You must have the right speech, You must have the right conduct, You must have the right livelihood, You must have the right effort, You must have the right mindfulness, You must have the right samadhi or you must know how to meditate right.
Throughout history, literature has served as a prominent tool in the examination of social values, ideas, and dreams. In addition, literature has provided a vital connection between historical, social, and political events. Through the incorporation of religious principles and philosophies, writers have discovered a way to portray different time periods, characters, feelings, and most importantly God.
Every decision that I make is absolutely guided by my Christian beliefs and are a rule and standard in how I derive at making decisions. Moreover, it’s through faith that I believe that the word of God reflects his character, nature and his will for mankind that guides decisions that are compatible with my Christian values (Summers, & Summers, 2012).
In “Starving for Wisdom” by Nicholas Kristof, the author explains the importance of humanities in enriching people and finances. The humanities are learning about human culture with “literature, history, art music and philosophy” (Oxford Dictionaries). Decisions based on the humanities can have negative effects on the population.
Being born in America where the majority of people 's faith is Christian , and my upbring in religion was based on those beliefs. I believe that there are many things in the Bible that are good , however the good is far outweighed by the unpalatable and contradictory parts of the Bible . Many people in faith have no evidence to justify claims, for example one time my Christian pastor went on about how the government should not be taking our guns. Yet Jesus was someone who valued things like love , compassion, acceptance , hope and giving. I don 't think Jesus would be advocating for gun rights. In my experience I have met some of the most judgemental , bigoted, hateful, and fake people in church. I do believe that most people are ,”good” but no one is perfect and any person can make bad choices. I think there are evil Christians, evil Muslims , evil Atheist, however there are good Christians , good Muslims, and good Atheists. I think most people would like to see the world as black and white, but morality is a gray area. Good and Evil are both subjective ideas , because someone 's opinion of how I live my life might be see as evil , whereas to my logical understanding it is morally good. I could rant all day and night about what is moral and why we should understand that almost no one on this earth believes that exact same as anyone else. Like most of my opinion as long as your faith and believes do not hurt anyone and do not legislate on things like science and the
But, what makes it beneficial to learn about in educational setting? This is exactly the topic that Witt brings to the reader’s attention when she asks the question, “What, it may well be asked, can the study of the humanities do for a student at the beginning of the twenty-first century?”. People started studying the humanities for hundreds of years. But, times have changed and along with that, what is important for young people to learn has changed. 30 years ago it was not important for elementary school children to learn to type, but know it is taught in almost every elementary school. Learning to analyze the humanities is important today because it helps the student to develop their own character as they discover what peaks their interest and it increases their own self knowledge. Before studying European cultures, they may not know that their Christmas tradition of parents hiding a pickle ornament on the tree for the children to find on christmas morning is because of their German heritage or that the reason their grandmother yells about taking your shoes off before entering the house is a showing of respect in Chinese culture. Also, Witt emphasizes the importance of the idea, “judge only after attempting to understand”. This is important in many situations of life with going throughout your adult life. It also may be helpful when meeting
Religion has endured a rocky road over the course of history, and so has art. Indeed it has evolved from the solemn themes of medieval art, to the romantic, whimsical mood of Renaissance art, to the shock value of contemporary art.
People are likely to react to situations and conceive their own morals based on the uniquely written scriptures of their own religion or confide in what they there raised to believe and understand. For instance in, early Christianity the Ten Commandments were formed, one of them is clearly stating ‘thou shall not murder’ resulting in the obedience of the religion’s followers, sometimes in fear of abandonment by God or community acceptance. A scripture someone reads in accordance with their religion, such as the bible, part of Catholicism, Christianity and Judaism usually have writings that refer to different aspects of everyday life, such as marriage or
These were handed down by God to govern the ways that people behave. But other religions that are not similar to Christianity have ethical codes as well. For example, many religions have elaborate sets of bans that govern their adherents behaviors. Although religion means something different to those of faith, it carries a immeasurable and persuasive movement of moral and ethical standards that guide the way for humans. While there may be such a wide range of belief systems, religion has a complex set of spiritual and cultural rules and rituals. There are several types of religions in the world today, most of which worships and practices differently. Most of the traditions, beliefs, and rituals these religions are consisted of our
Literature is an imitation of societal values and is thus a reflection of the human experience of a time period. Written works emphasize the elements of culture, by means of characters, particular events, setting and theme, specific to the time period in which it was composed. Furthermore, literature mirrors the troubles or hardships of society and projects the core values that define said society. Thus, as culture has changed over time, literature has remained a critical facet in representing time periods of the past. Essentially, the culture of a time period is manifested through writing in the projection of society’s values, symbolism of the center of community and literature itself.
Is it important to have art in our lives? Can something so simple make our minds travel to somewhere beyond where we are used to? I believe without art, in in any form, from dance, singing, to oil painting, life would be bland, because there wouldn’t be much to make us think, other than what we were already used to. For decades art has made us think, brought us together and opened our eyes to a deeper meaning, a deeper perspective.
