Laura Hillenbrand, the author of the biography Unbroken, tells the story of Louie Zamperini, an Italian immigrant, Olympic runner, and war hero. Throughout Hillenbrand’s work, we see Louie’s best and worst moments eloquently illustrated through her writing. Readers become immersed in her varying syntax to develop the major theme of survival in the biography. Throughout part one, Hillenbrand uses the sandwich effect to introduce the topic in the simple sentence and then thoroughly describes and explains it in the “meat” of the sentence and then concludes it with another simple sentence. Hillenbrand effectively uses this tactic on page 6 “if it was edible, Louie stole it...Then he ordered his friends to rob Meinzer’s again.” (Unbroken). The
Slaughterhouse-Five: The Novel and the Movie In 1972 director George Roy Hill released his screen adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five (or The Children's Crusade; A Duty Dance With Death). The film made over 4 million dollars and was touted as an "artistic success" by Vonnegut (Film Comment, 41). In fact, in an interview with Film Comment in 1985, Vonnegut called the film a "flawless translation" of his novel, which can be considered an honest assessment in light of his reviews of other adaptations of his works: Happy Birthday, Wanda June (1971) "turned out so abominably" that he asked to have his name removed from it; and he found Slapstick of Another Kind (1984) to be
My opinion of Fences varied throughout each scene in Act 1. My initial thought of the book was that it would be a standard book about a black family struggling in post World War 2 America as there has not been much successes in ending segregation during this time period. In my opinion, all the characters introduced in Act 1 were very likable including Troy despite his crude and direct personality, he seemed logical and understandable even without going into much debt into his past. After reading scene 1 Troy seemed like a parent who although it did not seem obvious, had his best intentions for his Lyons. Upon reading scene 2 and 3 Troy seemed quite strict and almost uncaring for his children but still seemed like he had the best in mind for
Private peaceful is a story which mainly follows the life of a boy named Thomas Peaceful (or Tommo as he is called by his friends and family) in the build up towards WW1. It talks of his family in their ups and downs including his Father’s death. We follow Tommo in the past tense as he reflects upon his time up to the trenches. In the extract of pages between page 153 and 155 (which is in the present tense), we see Tommo attacked by a gas cloud whilst writing to his mother. He is saved of his life by a German attacker (or “Fritz”). He is then given a bill of clear health upon inspection of how seriously he was hurt. He then goes to see all of his comrade’s bodies who were not so lucky and died in the attack.
Baruch Spinoza once said “Experience teaches us no less clearly than reason, that men believe themselves free, simply because they are conscious of their actions and unconscious of the causes whereby those actions are determined.” He compared free-will with destiny and ended up that what we live and what we think are all results of our destiny; and the concept of the free-will as humanity know is just the awareness of the situation. Similarly, Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five explores this struggle between free-will and destiny, and illustrates the idea of time in order to demonstrate that there is no free-will in war; it is just destiny. Vonnegut conveys this through irony, symbolism and satire.

The Conformist Textual Analysis (1:28:30) to (1:33:30) The Conformist, a 1970 Italian Drama set in 1930’s fascist italy, is a story of a man who conforms to his society and caves to peer pressure. It was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, and filmed in locations across Italy and France, with a runtime of 1 hour 53 minutes. In this analysis I will be discussing the use of mise en scene, shot types, and color in relation to fascist Italy and the cultures that developed along with it, as well as the influence on Marcello throughout the film. In The Conformist, Marcello, a cowardly man who wishes to be normal, is hired to assassinate his former professor, an anti-fascist. Marcello agrees to the orders in order to make up for his mistakes he has
This paper will argue that the blending of ancient and modern literary ideas is significant to Milton's goal of being considered one of the great poets, as his writing style emulates that of older texts, he repeated references stories written by those great authors, and the fact that his book is about the creation of everything. First, I will talk about the way Milton writes Paradise Lost. This is significant, as his writing style is similar to Virgil, an ancient Roman Poet. Next, I will discuss Milton's idea of the gods of old in the Christian world, and how this idea links the ancient texts to what he is writing. Finally, I will discuss Milton's choice of topic, his choice of plot points, and how it relates to his goal of being among the greatest poets.
Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry found the perfect, fragmented form to simulate memories in the non-linear storyline of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). The thematic elements of the film helps this simplistic story of love found, lost, and found again develop into a complex pattern, much like the workings of the brain. Each character is everything you would expect them to be in real life – down to earth, imperfect, and hopelessly searching for the love someone can only dream of. We can relate to them because we all long for more than we are, and want the best of us to be shown to someone else. Memories make up who we are, they define us. Life teaches us lessons which shape our memories, and in turn, we learn from them. What if those memories were gone? Are we still destined to be the same person? The protagonist of the movie is Joel, and the story surrounds his relationship with Clementine. The antagonist can be seen as Patrick, who tries to destroy their relationship, or Lacuna Inc., whose purpose is to make them forget their relationship. Charlie Kaufman has created a beautiful story that incorporates so many valuable forms in cinema, and leaves viewers on the edge of their seat until the very end. My goal is the show the class concepts of this narrative, as well as demonstrate how the way the film’s story is told

“The top bun is your introduction. The juicy steak, cheese, and other vegetables will be your juicy evidence. And the bottom bun will be your conclusion.”
As the economy weakens, Americans begin to find ways to save money. One of the latest trends in saving money is considered “the paperless office”. This new paperless office method is a concept that is now considered “Green”, also known as environmentally friendly. These “Green” approaches are engineered to help save money and save the environment. A paperless office does not completely eliminate paper in a work environment, but rather uses a minimal use of paper taking on a smarter approach by converting all documentation into a technological form. Reducing the use of paper in a work place improves efficiency, saves money, time and space.
