There are many different ways to attracting a person to a book, and one may ask what those different ways might be. Although an author can attract a reader based on the title of a book, or the opening sentence, but a good book uses literary devices such as figurative language, diction, syntax and much more which is all based off of style. In the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, style is used throughout the whole book and contains on a lot of details which makes the novel both compelling and pleasurable to read. Symbolism is very important in a novel because it can be based of an object, person or situation that have a deeper meaning in context. There are many clues in the 12 stories of The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes that are symbols. In pg.50, Julia Stoner’s dying words are, “It was the band! The speckled band!” One would believe that there is some hidden meaning that could symbolize family or trust since they …show more content…

A word's denotation is the dictionary example of that word and refers to the idea it characterizes. However, connotation is the emotional meaning of the word, comparing “cheap” to “inexpensive” as an example. In “A case of Identity,” Holmes explains details to show that a jacket isn’t just a jacket and a shoe isn’t just a shoe while describing a woman to watson. Overall using literary devices in helps an author with what they’re writing sound better, help the readers understand what’s happening in the book and what the character does based on their actions using figurative language, or diction. Without it, the story would be plain and the author would have difficult time making the book enjoyable for his/her audience. If Author, Arthur Conan Doyle did not use any literary devices in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes the novel would most likely not have the best ratings or reviews and that would lead to people not buying or enjoying the
