“Dictionary.com” defines survival as an aspect of “remaining alive, especially under adverse or unusual circumstances” . This quote specifies that when one’s under significant circumstances, survival will become a priority. This is a theme that is very important in both novels studied this year, “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, and “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding. This means that staying alive will become a task. People can depend on survival and become desperate to do anything for life. In the novelLife of Pi” by Yann Martel and in the novel “The Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, the characters all deal with the theme of survival. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English; and the English are best at everything.”( chapter 2, page 42 ), is a quote that is said by Jack. It is ironic that he says that he agrees with Ralph and that he thinks that they all must obey the rules because he is the first character to break the rules. Jack also says that he does not care about the rules and that they are useless, in the later chapters. This is important because of the growth and evolution of the boys. They were young boys that were later on transformed into savages to survive on the island. Unlike in the first novel, “Life of Pi” introduced the reader to Pi Molitor Patel, an Indian boy who has always lived with his family and his brother Ravi. They all lived in Pondicherry, and Pi’s father owned a zoo. His family decided to move to Canada with some animals from the zoo, but the ship got in the middle of a storm. Pi was the only member of his family who survived the shipwreck. He was left on a lifeboat in the ocean with a hyena, a monkey, a zebra and a Bengal tiger. Pi was isolated from all civilization for a long time so he had to figure a way to survive on his own; he had to be independent. He also had to figure out a way to survive on the small lifeboat with a carnivorous mammal on board. In the quote: “I had to tame him. It was in that moment that I realized this necessity.
