“Dictionary.com” defines survival as an aspect of “remaining alive, especially under adverse or unusual circumstances” . This quote specifies that when one’s under significant circumstances, survival will become a priority. This is a theme that is very important in both novels studied this year, “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, and “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding. This means that staying alive will become a task. People can depend on survival and become desperate to do anything for life. In the novel “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel and in the novel “The Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, the characters all deal with the theme of survival. This topic is worth exploring because it has been a very outspoken subject in many movies …show more content…
We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English; and the English are best at everything.”( chapter 2, page 42 ), is a quote that is said by Jack. It is ironic that he says that he agrees with Ralph and that he thinks that they all must obey the rules because he is the first character to break the rules. Jack also says that he does not care about the rules and that they are useless, in the later chapters. This is important because of the growth and evolution of the boys. They were young boys that were later on transformed into savages to survive on the island. Unlike in the first novel, “Life of Pi” introduced the reader to Pi Molitor Patel, an Indian boy who has always lived with his family and his brother Ravi. They all lived in Pondicherry, and Pi’s father owned a zoo. His family decided to move to Canada with some animals from the zoo, but the ship got in the middle of a storm. Pi was the only member of his family who survived the shipwreck. He was left on a lifeboat in the ocean with a hyena, a monkey, a zebra and a Bengal tiger. Pi was isolated from all civilization for a long time so he had to figure a way to survive on his own; he had to be independent. He also had to figure out a way to survive on the small lifeboat with a carnivorous mammal on board. In the quote: “I had to tame him. It was in that moment that I realized this necessity. It was not a question of him or me, but of him and me. We were, literally and figuratively
To survive is to continue to live despite enduring life threatening situations. It’s obtaining a motive to keep on living during a hostile situation. Survival is demonstrated in William Golding‘s Lord of the Flies and the movie Alive produced by Frank Marshal, when the characters take extreme measures in order to remain living. In Alive a plane from Uruguay gets stranded on a snow swept mountain with limited supplies. The novel Lord of the Flies consists of a group of young English boys stranded on a tropical island during the war. In both texts surviving is an obstacle that had to be faced and they overcome it in a different way. Because Alive characters worked together, they kept their propriety unlike the boys in William Golding’s novel who turned against each other. In both Lord of the Flies and Alive the groups lose their innocence in different ways however; the boys in Alive are able to maintain their civility due to the difference in maturity, setting, and relationships.
In contrast to the background of Lord of the Flies, Pi, the main character in Life of Pi, has a relatively peaceful childhood. He grows up in the 1970s in Pondicherry, South India, during a time of peace and prosperity. Except for school bullies, he is largely ignorant of violence, bar the time his father exposed him and his brother to the dangerous tendencies of the zoo animals. Furthermore, Pi explores religion for himself, and while he does have values impressed upon him by his parents, such as not eating meat, he is largely responsible for creating his own unique set of values that revolve around three major religions.
Ever since the beginning of time, there has always been a need to survive no matter the cost. We all have that survival instinct within us. Some however embrace it more than others. They take risks that ensure their life with them. Many stories have been passed down from generation to generation retelling the experiences of people who have gone to extreme lengths in order to survive, some of which, I have read and found quite interesting.
Many people have experienced situations that challenges their survival. Sometime people may experience a situation, like a friend betrayal or violence, in life that changes him/her short-term or have a long-term effect on the person you hurt or even yourself too. Everyone experiences, their own definition of survival, like taking five tests in a day or simply making it through the day, that can lead and help them find the insights of life that will guide them. Survival plays a role throughout two completely different stories which is what makes it different, but also displays resemblance that makes their stories similar. Amir, The Kite Runner, and the leader Ralph, Lord of the Flies, have both faced dramatic situations, betrayal of their friends, and violence making their each experience unique.
In a short story named “The Story of Keesh” and a novel excerpt named “The Life of Pi” both authors, Jack London and Yann Martel, develop certain qualities in characters who find the strength in themselves to want to survive when in extreme situations. Both Keesh and Pi obtain three traits that help them survive in these extreme environments such as bravery, intelligence and strategic plans.
A survival is very brave because a person who try to live is brave, but that is not what I was talking about. What i am talking about is how they have to keep on living even though they are all alone. One example
Some people wonder what the most important characteristic of survival is. But with a little thought, it should appear obvious: courage. Yes, courage is the most important trait of survival. While knowledge and strength are also important components of survival, without enough courage, you cannot even use strength or knowledge when trying to survive. Two pieces of writing, The Hunger Games and The Man in the Water, show how courage is the most important trait of survival. Whether helping yourself survive, or helping other people survive, courage is the key to survival.
While some may question Gonzales position on survival, I agree with his ideas because he uses relevant examples to show survival. The stories I will be discussing are the plane crash with Juliane and the World Trade Center disaster. “Plan the flight and fly the plan. But don’t fall in love with the plan.”(Gonzales 332).
“Survival is triumph enough” (Harry Crews) In the excerpt “Life of Pi” Pi had to survive in the sea with a Keesh and Pi had to undergo extreme conditions and had to survive in life threatening situations.
After going through and reading “The story of Keesh” and “Life of Pi”, The essential question is “What inspires the will to survive in extreme enviroments”. To survive in an extreme enviroment you need food rashins, and fresh water, So the main character would need to use the rescources that are available. Main characters of the text must try to look for help like ships or anything that can guide you to safety. You also need to stay in high spirits and believe that you will be rescued. A few reason are you only have a limited amount of food and water. You need to have shelter to survive in warmth. We also need people to communicate with if your alone. They are both in a type of extreme enviroment. Pi is going through heavy rain storms. Then
What does survival mean to you? Webster's dictionary defines survival as the ability to remain the ;ife to continue to exist, to continue function, and prospers. The lost boys of ‘Sudan’ and your unimaginable physical and emotional obstacles to be able to survive and live without there parents.
As the will to survive becomes a necessity everyone starts to yearn for their lifes before their able to actually gain what they need to gain. In times of trouble everyone brings out their best and full strength to overcome a challenge in their pathway, where someone must overcome losing limbs in order to survive, or when a pair has to walk through hoards of the undead to reach safety; that’s when life has you on your toes making life a survival game.
“Survival is the ability to swim in strange water” (Frank Herbert). Pi demonstrated life on the Pacific as a test of all aspects. Life on the Pacific tested his physical endurance, he was lost for two-hundred and seventy seven days. In that time, Pi demonstrates his faith towards God, himself, and Richard Parker. Pi develops a robust bond with Richard Parker, then connecting spiritually. Survival in the novel Life of Pi is etched in the deepest parts of the story. These aspects of the novel are depicted through personal and self-reflection within himself. Pi survives because of his strength, faith and a close relationship with Richard Parker.
Survival is important to know in life. It is good to learn about survival . For example, if you were going camping, you need to know survival skills. What I think is important to know for survival is positive attitude, toughness, and motivation.
The saying “desperate times call for desperate measures” holds truth to an extent. In the award winning novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, drastic measures are taken by characters in order to survive while stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean. Through his journey, main character, Pi Patel, endures many hardships and witnesses several deaths. Significantly, the death of the zebra accompanying Pi and the other animals establishes a generalization of human nature being sophisticated yet inherently vicious according to methods of survival.
