There was a group of people wanting to organize a preservation group. The headline in the local paper read, “Meeting Planned Friday to Organize Historical Society.” “Its purpose to be the preservation of historical data and historical spots.”9 Clarence Jones was one of the first members of the Licking County Historical Society. Their organization started in 1867. They must have made a great effort for preservation. However, with the aforementioned events, I find it difficult for them to carry out their purpose.
Quoted by Handler and Gable, critic Ada Louise Huxtable declares the newly constructed reproduction of Colonial Williamsburg as “too clean,” arguing that it “does not include the filth and stench that would have been commonplace.” (Source E) This sanitation of the truth completely misrepresents history, and the educational value greatly suffers. Conversely, the National Museum of the American Indian hopes to avoid this lack of judgment by dedicating itself to the “preservation, study, and exhibition of the life, languages, literature, history, and Arts of Native Americans.” (Source C) The main goal of the museum is to “span all major cultural areas” (C) and educate the public about and preserve the rich history of such a vast culture. The authenticity and significance of artifacts are important to representing culture and history, and the ability of these artifacts to educate should be a key factor of the selection process.
On August 25, 1980, members of the Rearden Family were summoned to the home of the late Oacy Rearden’s in Edgefield, South Carolina, to formulate plans for a Rearden Family Reunion. Descendants in attendance
The Shippensburg and the Civil War Book Club will enhance the lives of the individuals participating through engagement in a variety of subjects relating to the Civil War on a local and national level. In order to bring the past of Shippensburg to life, we will be involving the members of our book club in numerous activities. Included in these activities are field trips to local areas of interest that involve past members of the community, as well as areas that were vital to the role Shippensburg played in the Civil War, guest speakers such as William Burkhart himself, author of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania in the Civil War, and participating in the annual March to Destiny Reenactment. Through meaningful discussion, these activities will
In a dystopian timeline the UT Vols have had two consecutive no win seasons and the town of Knoxville, TN is completely abandoned. Over time the city begins to feel the effect of weather, decay, and bioturbation. It isn’t until 500 years after evacuation that archaeologists return to the city to study the lives of the people who once lived there. During an excavation these professionals find two plastic bins filled with artifacts. Their goal now is to understand what the purpose and function of these artifacts are and what they can tell about the people who owned them. However, due to the nature of time passing, changes have occured in these items and others have been completely removed from the archaeological record. These occurrences will
Walker has entrusted Boatwright Memorial Library with the care of this amazing collection,” said Lynda Kachurek, head of rare books and special collections. “We expect civil rights and other historians from all over the country and world to be interested in this scholarship, as well as our faculty, staff, students and the general public.”
Today historian Lisa Minardi, an alumni of Ursinus, visited the Bears Make History Class for lunch. Now, it should be no secret that I'm an undeclared history major, and that I hope to go far in my application of history in the future. I say this so that you can better understand just what it meant for me to get to listen to and interact with an actual historian, someone who's living the life I one day aspire to have. I mean what Ms. Minardi has managed to do since leaving Ursinus is simply astonishing, and quickly won over my adoration. I was especially impressed by her role in saving the Speaker House, the home of Frederick Muhlenberg, in Collegeville from ruin, and her efforts to see to the building's restoration. In addition, her collaboration with the people in charge of Henry Muhlenberg's historic house was quite noteworthy, in that she somehow managed to increase the building's yearly visitor attendance from 100 people to around 1,600. One could easily credit Ms. Minardi with saving not just one but two historic buildings, and, by doing
As time has progressed on, in a little town in eastern West Virginia, it is as though time has taken a halt. In Elkins West Virginia nestled in the mountain tops a small community on a hill does its best to preserve history the best way it possibly could by holding one of oldest buildings in town on its foundation. It is a showing of a time long before, it truly is something to be celebrated. History, a true design of focus on the Campus of Davis and Elkins
The topic of this research is about a man who has been mostly forgotten by most people in America today, but helped shaped the outcome of the American revolution and holds his own compared to those who are remembered. Even with a few such as James Graham to say that “After examining all the sources of information within my reach, I became convinced that few, if any, of the heroes of that day furnished larger contributions than he did to the glory of our arms, or surpassed him in the amount and value of their services.” This man he highly speaks of is Daniel Morgan, or know by his nickname of “Old Wagoneer” for his past work as a Teamster, which was a person who drove a wagon filled with goods and products from town to town, their version of truck drivers for that
It must have been 13 years or so since I have been to the art museum, back in elementary school, on a one of a kind field trip. 13 years is way too long to have been away from the art museum, as my experience this year reminded me that. It was a beautiful, sunny October day, although it felt like July, and it was an even better day to talk a walk through the vast, mesmerizing pieces of art that the museum has to offer. The North Carolina Museum of Art provides an abundance of artwork from various time periods, cultures, and one can find art anywhere from Egyptian, to classical, to modern and contemporary art. The artwork that the museum provides not only displays an abundance of artwork, but
Rockefeller and Dr. Goodwin saw an opportunity to ensure that the courageous ideals of the patriots who helped create the American democratic system live on for future generations.” Currently, the history of the Williamsburg settlement is America’s largest and most famous living-history
The Executive Director of the Museum begins to restore this organization with clear point of view, that the
Despite living in indiana most of my life, I can’t say I ever paid much attention to Wayne County before coming to Earlham, politically or otherwise. From the rest of the state, Wayne County appears fairly unremarkable, just as from the rest of the country, indiana being one of the more forgettable states. However, since coming here, and completing this seminar, I’ve seen far more of the interesting parts of the place than I had expected or ever noticed before. Between being something of a testing ground for vote centers, and the complex ways allegiance can go here during election, it just goes to show, that anywhere can be interesting if you’re willing to dig a little.
Prior to the outset of the book club, volunteers will prepare advertisements such as posters, newspaper ads, as well as developing a website. This literature will function as an enticement for prospective members to attend our first meeting. Moreover, the website will serve numerous functions in correlation with advertisements. It will provide the infrastructure for communication, in addition to administering a location for online discussions, which will occur apart from meetings. This online dialogue will be moderated by the volunteer staff. In addition, the website will link to a blog created by the volunteers, showcasing research conducted using resources located at the Shippensburg Historical Society.
This case focuses on the development of the Cuyahoga River Valley Organization (CRVO) which is charged with caring out the Cuyahoga Valley Initiative (CVI). The initiation of this organization began with an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2000. The article discussed the history, natural beauty, and industry in the Cuyahoga Valley located in northeastern Ohio. The valley is rich in natural resources and allows for access to land and water transportation networks that helped it to be positioned as a center for many of America’s early industries
“A journal without a beginning would certainly not be very interesting,” the self-aware Emily Beeler Fletcher noted as she began her first journal on May 11th, 1863. Mrs. Beeler Fletcher would continue to be self-aware as she wrote three other journals that spanned from May 1863 to February 1870. She chastises herself throughout the journals for not writing consistently or in beautiful phrasing. She notes that she started these journals to both improve her writing and to help her remember events that happen in her life. This goal, stated from the beginning, reflects her determination to do everything to the best of her ability for she had a reputation to uphold. This ideology will also inform her philanthropic work during and after the Civil War as a typical higher class woman in Indianapolis.
