The current context of LGBTQ+ and women’s rights such as abortion with the recent election of President Trump was the inspiration for my research. I feel it is important for everyone to know when there has potentially been a violation of right’s, no matter the side one person and one vote can make a difference in so many lives. My mind has always been overcome with questions that relate to religion and the role it plays in politics. I have found through personal experience that religion plays in integral part in the political decision making of many individuals. These questions led me to formulate a formal question to give direction to my research. This question is, “How has Christianity impacted the passage of LGBTQ+ and women’s rights laws …show more content…
The historical basis similarity was used in many resources to provide context for the later information or the basis for argument mentioned later in the source. I feel that this specific similarity aided in the overall understanding for the reader without any prior knowledge being necessary. I plan to use some topical history as part of my persuasive essay, because it enhances the effectiveness of the writing and makes it more …show more content…
Comparing Competing Explanations of the Link Between White Evangelicals and Conservative Politics in the United States” and “Intimate Choice, Public Threats – LGBTQ Rights Under a Trump Administration” didn’t use any historical information as a precursor to the article and it did not enhance the understanding of the topic. When reading these articles, I found that I had harder time understanding the information and getting myself to the end of the article with knowledge that I had gained from reading. After reading the articles that included the history I realized that it was an integral section of the writing that made the information more logical and communicated more
In this article, “Kentucky Clerk Ordered to Jail for Refusing to Issue Gay Marriage License” the author James Higdon focuses on the recent topic of gay marriage. Higdon’s story relates to a Kentucky woman named Kim Davis. Davis was arrested September 3, 2015 because she refused to issue marriage license to a gay couple. “Under questioning from her attorney, Davis went on to express her opposition to same-sex marriage, which she said was ‘not of God’ and contrary to natural law and therefore not something that she could condone” (Higdon). This quote shows that Davis refused to issue marriage licenses because of her religious beliefs. Davis’s religious beliefs are so strong that she continued to fight with the law and the court judge
As Johnson writes, Stutzman and Freed and Ingersoll’s case “addressed sweeping questions about public accommodation, artistic expression and free speech.” The issues of free speech, freedom of religion, and protection from discrimination dominate the modern civil rights movement. With the election of President Donald Trump and the ascension of the Republican party in government, LGBT+ rights may be increasingly challenged, more-so than they have been in recent
On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court removed the ban on same-sex marriage nationwide. On July 15, 2015, Kenneth Jost published an article named “Will there be more gains after marriage ruling?” In this article, Jost discusses the viewpoints of the general public and argues that there may still be a struggle to gain full rights and respect for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. The article covers the reaction of the public on June 26, along with politicians stand-points on the subject, and the Caitlyn Jenner controversy. Jost’s main argument is that LGBT people are not being protected by the government, even though they have gained the right to marry.
Throughout this semester in class, we have discussed a variety of topics concerning religious tolerance and conflict. There were a couple of units that I connected mostly which were the topics of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community regarding religious convictions and the overall depiction of Jesus Christ. Media that highlighted these two subjects were Edward Blum’s and Paul Harvey’s “Color of Christ,” and Matthew Vine’s “The Gay Debate.” Both readings connect as they both present logical fallacies and current implications that are mainly based on historical beliefs alike. Even though both use history to support the points that were addressed, after reading both Color of Christ and The Gay Debate, they both
Sadly, until this problem is fixed, LGBTQ+ people will still discriminate against because of people standing up for Religious Freedom. 64% of LGBTQ+ kids feel unsafe in their school because of their sexual orientation, and 44% feel unsafe because of their gender identity. The LGBTQ+ community fair for them to be discriminated against, but this country was founded on Religious Freedom, so it isn’t fair for people of faith to go against their beliefs. Until this problem is solved, LGBTQ+ people, kids, and adults, will be bullied and discriminated against, and people of faith will feel their rights aren’t protected.
It’s not hard to say that America has come so far into society and our freedom. How can our country forget when slavery ended in 1865 and gave women more rights in 1920. However, over time America has ignored the basic rights of transgender people. Transgender people are not any different from African Americans, or women. Why should they be treated any different, they're humans just like everybody else. They deserve the same basic treatment as a human rather than being treated like they're not from this planet. There are transgender people today who are getting harassed and tormented for just going into the bathroom for what they identify as. They should be able to go into a bathroom for which gender they identify as. Rather than making special bathrooms for transgender people that make them stand out and feel like they’re labeling themselves for using.
In a problem filled world that seems to be spiraling out of control, America cannot stand to be divided as black and white or liberal and conservative any longer if we want to succeed. The moderate ideology will provide the compromise this country needs. Three issues that are at the height of controversy include the LGBTQ community, abortion, and foreign aid. On June 6, 2015, same sex marriage was legalized by the federal government. This engendered the huge recognition of the LGBTQ community as it was thrust into the spotlight. 4% of the adult population identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual in addition to the 700,000 transgender individuals. Currently, the North Carolina law that restricts people to a public bathroom based off their gender at birth, is still in dispute. Liberals believe that it is the government's
All families face challenges in their everyday life. For some, the challenges are easier to handle while for others, surmounting those challenges can be more difficult. Over the years, the LGBT community in the US has faced many hurdles. Whether it’s the legalization of same-sex marriage to adoption rights to alimony, child support and child custody in case of divorce, legislation specific to gay and lesbian couples still has a long way to go.
The government has been trying to figure out what to do when it comes to bathroom laws and more importantly, insurance coverage. Transitioning from one gender to the other is very
The LGBT community in the United States has always had massive difficulty fitting into our society. For many years they put up with constant mistreatment and other forms of abuse coming from the those who do not agree with their lifestyle. They have for long advocated for the acceptance of their existence and punishment for crimes committed against them. One of the hardest battles the community has had to face was the right to marry in a society that still holds the values of a traditional relationship which is between a male and female. The struggle was quite harsh but it all paid off by 2015 when the supreme court granted gay couples the right to marry. This historical decision did not go without outcry and criticisms. Most of the dissatisfaction came from those who hold very religious values and beliefs that claims homosexuality is a sin. Religion has always been a part of the American way of life since the nation's founding and with that homosexuality has been demonized throughout our society. Now that gay couple possess the legal rights to have a marriage license, religious companies and/or stores are now denying service to LGBT couples as they believe it sinful on their behalf to even take part. Many people gay or straight who fought for gay rights believe these is pure discrimination and that stores should not have the right to deny service for any customer for any reason. However, this belief is unconstitutional and goes
When someone calls themself transgender, it means that they do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. For example, someone who was born as a man may later realize that they are in fact a woman; this person would be called a trans woman. There is much debate over transgenderism and, specifically, whether society should treat transgenders as their biological sex or their gender identity. For example, if a transgender man (biological sex being female) wants to use the men’s restroom, should he be able to? The laws that would allow this are known as transgender inclusion laws, and the debate over passing such laws has always been extremely heated. Transgender inclusion laws should be passed in all areas, as there has been no increase in crime rates as a result of transgender use of public facilities, transgenderism is absolutely real and should be recognized as such, and these laws only brings benefits for any trans-friendly environments.
Marriage could be a simply agreement between two consenting adults that are ready to commitment to one another. I’m sorry to say this but, marriage doesn't work in such a simple way like that. It is a civil institution authorized by the government that brings certain rights, privileges, and statuses. This is what makes marriage itself a political issue. The LGBT community just wants to be able to have the same status in society as every other married couple. Marriage overall is a political issue because it is endorsed by the government with certain privileges. Second, politics is all about freedom and equality after all. Gay marriage should be allowed because everyone should have the same right to marry the people that they love after all you can’t choose the people you fall in love with you can’t choose your sexuality and you can’t change that no matter what people say or want they do.
My intent with this essay is to question the means of the government and its influencing politicans who are against same-sex marriages. By providing factual knowledge on this subject, I hope that one can come to see how the United States has come to contradict itself on a state and federal level by ignoring the very truths the nation was founded on (e.g. separation of church and state).
The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. Yet, same-sex marriage continues to be a highly debated issue that leaves our society searching for answers. This has been very apparent during elections when politicians, in order to distract or sway conservative voters, all took a side and had an opinion on the issue of same-sex marriage. The debate has been presented on the left as a civil rights debate, equal rights. And on the right, as a morals debate, a referendum on homosexuality (Rauch, J. 2004). Everyone has an opinion on whether two men or two women should be allowed to get married, and in doing so, have all the same rights granted by the federal government to them as
Ellen DeGeneres, who is a famous TV host, once said, “Do we have to know who’s gay and who’s straight? Can’t we just love everybody...” marriage is not about if your straight or gay it really about who you fall in love with and how that person is going to help you expand your life. As the year's pass, America became divided between being for or against gay marriage. The fact that in 1986 was when the court first considered the matter in gay marriage with the case of Bowers V Hardwick, a challenge to Georgia law authorizing criminal penalties for a person guilty of Sodom which prove that gay right law was questioned all the way back in the 19centuries. however, they are two supreme court decisions involving gay marriage, one decade apart, have left a lot of people wondering just where the law now stands with respect to the right to engage in homosexual conduct. However, we as the people, need to come together and help them give that right back to homosexual couples so they could be able to marry and live freely with their spouse. In addition, gay marriage should be legal in every state because denying some people the option to marry is discrimination and create second-class citizens; however, marriage is human rights and same-sex couples can make a better couple.
