As child practitioners we must work on our skills in communicating with children because the way we communicate with them is important not only for their communication and language development, but also the development of our relationship with them. Young children often aren't able to express their thoughts and feelings in words, or express them poorly. Because of this, it's important that child practitioners can listen carefully and help children to learn how to express themselves and also provide what they need.

This might be through a mix of open and closed questions. For example, a closed question such as “are you enjoying this?” is quite safe as it allows the child to simply answer yes or no and they can add to it if they wish. Open questions such as “why do you like this one?” are good at encouraging children to talk a little more as they require a fuller answer. Using questions can show your interest and help you explore some issues.
Non verbal communication
By observing us children learn how to interact with others, accomplish goals, and get along in the world. We are the examples, and what many do not realize is that our non-verbal messages and actions are stronger than our verbal ones. Non-verbal communication consists of expressions, tone of voice, eye contact, and actions. The way you listen, look, move, and react tells the other person whether or not you care, if you’re being truthful, and how well you’re listening. When your nonverbal signals match up with the words you’re saying, they increase trust, clarity, and rapport. When they don’t, they generate tension, mistrust, and confusion. There are many different types of nonverbal communication. Together, the following nonverbal signals and cues communicate your interest and investment in others.
Facial expressions -The human face is extremely expressive, able to express countless emotions without saying a word. And unlike some forms of nonverbal communication, facial expressions are
Nonverbal messages are an essential component of communication in the teaching process. It is not only what you say to your student that is important but also how you say it. An awareness of nonverbal behaviour will allow you to become a better receiver of students’ messages and a better sender of signals that reinforce learning.
Nonverbal communication or body language makes up 55% of effective communication. This plays the biggest part in communication, and it shows the client or colleague more information than words alone ever could. Nonverbal communication includes facial expressions, body movement and gestures, head movements, eye contact, posture, and the use of distances and space. Understanding and using nonverbal communication can enhance the connection between you and others, navigate challenging situations and well as expressing interest in the conversation. this can also established effective rapport between you and the client or colleague.
Facial expressions through non-verbal communication are a sufficient way in listening, expressing emotion and giving feedback. Non-verbal communication is a vital element of interpersonal communication as it helps express emotion and personality through the process of exchanging information (Eunson 2012). Non-verbal signals such as facial expressions can be defined as
Non-verbal communication is very important and is often more important than verbal communication. This consists of eye contact, hand and body language and facial expressions.
I have learned that being able to utilise good communication skills is fundamental when working with children. It is so important to building and supporting ongoing relationships, which, along with listening,
Non-verbal communication | 1. Posture. This is the way in which someone holds their self, the way the stand etc. 2. Facial expression. This is the way someone’s face responds to an action or words. For e.g.…if someone was told something they like they would generally be wide eyed and smiling. |
In my setting I ensure that I am actively listening at all times by smiling when appropriate. We also have an open door policy where parents are allowed to visit the setting at any time that is convenient for them, for example to talk to their child or the child’s key worker. This approach
Facial Expression: The facial expression such as happiness, sadness, anger and fear helps a lot in conveying a message. These facial expressions are similar all over the world but non- verbal communication and behaviour varies hugely between the cultures in the world.Since the look on a person’s face is noticed , before we hear ,facial expression contributes a lot in a successfully non-verbal communication .
The vital thing is to be aware of their abilities and, as I have said above, be clear when communicating, keep in mind what the child is capable of. Speak at their level and with eye contact. Always encourage them to respond and answer questions, this will help with confidence. When they get something right, praise them and make them feel good, this will also give them confidence. Also if they get something wrong, or misbehave, explain what they have done wrong in a positive way and explain what they could do to make it right. Repeat things if necessary and ensure that the child has understood. Ask questions in a way that encourages children and young adults to answer in full sentences which shows that they have understood what is being asked.
Facial expressions are probably the most observed part of the human body when we communicate mentioned in the natural bridges book.
There are eight key forms of nonverbal communications used on a daily basis. These forms can affect the way people view another person; however, without understanding the forms of nonverbal communication there is certain to be a lot of misinterpretations. Cultural and language differences are a common reason for miscommunication. When communicating with people in different cultures, a person should be extremely aware of the hand gestures and nonverbal communication tools they are using. Many of the hand gestures used in the United States that mean good things, mean offensive and profane things to other cultures. Nonverbal communication is described as body language, hand gestures, and facial expressions. It is known that people reveal more information through nonverbal communication, than words alone to get a point across. There will always be some interaction between two or more people that everyone’s
The quality of relationships that we as practitioners have with children and young people has a huge effect on the way in which we can work with them and help them. When children feel comfortable with us they can separate more easily from their parents, they are more likely to participate in the play and learning activities if they are secure emotionally. When children have a strong relationship they are less likely to show unwanted behaviour as we can recognise and meet their needs, children’s language may develop more quickly as they feel confident talking to us. Practitioners can plan more accurately as they understand children’s developmental needs and know their interests and what
The one that people tend to rely on the most to see how others truly feel about something are facial expressions. There are also five types of emotions that can be read on a human face throughout multiple cultures: disgust, sadness, happiness, fear, and anger (Izard, 1991; Rozin, Lowery, & Ebert, 1994). What makes this complicated is that multiple expressions can be mixed together and also at times, individual can mask how they are really feeling by using other expressions and emotions to cover them up for numerous
Non – verbal messages are conveyed through your hand gestures, body, face, eyes, touch, environment which helps us improving as a communicator as well as improve your relationships with other people and helps you to improve your self-esteem. Non-verbal communication is more dependable because it exactly tells you message when our mouth fails to do. Non-verbal communication is more reliable because it shows true intention and attitude of a person. In non-verbal communication, the tone of a message is more clearly understood due to the involvement of gestures and facial expressions. The person can understand weather the other person is being professional, polite or rude. In business nonverbal communication can benefit in leading the employees and team members of an organization. Non – verbal communication can help you to even improve your ability to deceive people. Non-verbal communication is used by us in our everyday life. Basically non-verbal communication includes all communication which is not achieved purely through the use of words or other symbols which perform same task as words. Nonverbal communication is a collection of body movements and expressions, such as hand gestures, spacing, facial expressions, eye behavior, and posture as a way of transmitting messages either with or without vocalization. An individual uses these expressions both consciously and unconsciously. (Heider, 2007, p 106).
