When I first began to read the novel, One Wish by Leigh Brescia, I did not think I would be able to cope with how superficial and obsessive the protagonist was, nevertheless, read the whole book with a character like that. I also did not know what to expect because I have never read any books from the author Leigh Brescia, nor have I ever even heard of her, quite frankly. However, on a deadline, I forced myself to immerse myself in this book and watch the transformation of the protagonist unravel as I turned every page. I am pleased to say, I loved the transformation, albeit, it was a very arduous and lengthy one. Wrenn, designated after the songbird, is a very insecure, superficial, and misguided sixteen-year-old. Right from the start of the novel, Wrenn describes how unattractive and fat she is. She was a nobody in a sea of somebodies. I quickly became irritated to great heights with Wrenn. Not only was she very critical of herself, but she was especially, and unnecessarily critical of others. That is if they weren’t skinny, attractive, or popular. Holding true to its name, the novel clarifies Wrenn’s “one wish”; to be beautiful, thin, and popular. However, she changed her image for all the wrong reasons, and in all the wrong ways. Driven by her best friend, Zoe, Wrenn auditions for the musical, Grease. And to her surprise, …show more content…
Everything happens for a reason, and although Wrenn’s insecurity drove her to make extremely grave mistakes, it all turned around for her. And by the end of the book, Wrenn improved not only her image, in a healthy way, but she also improved her disposition. The Wrenn she became was a self-loving and happy Wrenn. I think this book is a great book because there are so many teenagers who need help learning to love themselves. And this book teaches the reader that loving yourself can be the best thing you can do for
1) When evaluating the opportunity for Heather Evans it is important to analyze the situation from a few perspectives. From an industry perspective there is ample opportunity for her to succeed. The barriers to entry are quite low with no clear market leader and even the largest companies do not have high relative market share. Her concept appears to provide her with some differentiation and that will help to position her products to a target segment of the market. The industry growth rate is a strong 10%; however customer retention will be a challenge. Evans does not seem to have the requisite experience or network in the industry to embark on a solo venture. In all, there is an opportunity for a designer with a strong business plan to be
Overall, the memoir shows us a few important lessons. The biggest reason the author wanted us to realize was that your childhood will end and when that happens, the world will be very different. The main character says on page 97 that “Only how come I felt angry inside. Like something wasn’t right.”
I feel that, this novel is a good read for teenagers, because by reading it they can learn to accept there differences and themselfs . In our world today, nobody likes to be different, in fact most people try to change themselves. In the novel, it talks about how Calvin became secofenic. At first when Calvin found out the news , he imedily says that his mental illness was is a death of being normal. In the end Calvin learns to accept himself, and I think that teenagers need to do the same because, in world full of normal people, we need people who stand can out and make a change.
Furthermore, I also like how he added the theme and message about how a child needs a good role model or someone to look up to for good advice and decisions. For example, the other Wes Moore looks up to Tony but copies him towards stealing and killing. I like how the book states that if you have someone you can look up to, you will create a better life and a better future for yourself. However, I think the transition from first person point of view and third person point of view threw me off a little. Sometimes when I finish reading the book in the morning and continue reading later in the day, I pick up the book and start reading again. I usually get confused on which Wes Moore the author is talking about. I always have to read one or two pages previously to see whom they are talking about like he or I. To conclude with, I enjoyed reading this book and I think this book could help kids follow a right role model to have a better
This book was a very good read. It was very eye opening. More than what I expected. It was a very well written book about the hidden lives of young
There were a few points in this book that taught me about life and how crazy it can be sometimes. The photographer named Fulgencio was very afraid of hitch hiking to Mexico City with a stranger, especially with all of us expensive equipment. On the ride, Fulgencio is so paranoid that the guy is going to kill him, he grabs a machete out of the back of the truck. In doing so he gets kicked out of the car and loses all of his photography equipment anyways. This taught me that we need to trust each other more, Just because there are a few crazy people in the world, we shouldn't let them give us all a bad name. I mean, the guy picked Fulgencio up when he was in desperate need of a car, and gives him a ride. He should have been thankful, not picked up a machete and threaten the guy. Another thing this book taught me was that just because your sister doesn't want your kid anymore because she
This book doesn't just make you think about your life in a different way, it makes you think about writing in a different way. There's so many little things in the book that were symbolically important, Art on the first day of school and how she would be working on making a tree different, not just a tree. You began to realize the more Melinda learned and the more Melinda went through, the more she began to understand the tree, the roots, and the dying leaves. There's many things in this book that are symbolically that you might not notice unless you analyze it in your own way.
My reflections on the orginization of the novel ended with me loving how the book came together. Alex started off as a normal teenager that does normal teenage activities , but then in a blink of a eye his
Characters change in good ways and the book itself shows the readers how something terrible changes people, even real life. Parents will always say to their little children “little things matter so help”, Mrs.Reffel, also they would told them in desperate measures help anyone that needs it. In The Killing Sea, Sarah was a little brat, she thought that she was the center of attention and didn’t care about anyone, only herself. When the disaster hit Indonesia, where she went for vacation, something in her says, “We need to change to survive”. Sometimes the world needs to lose something valuable to know they have a lot things that they do not say “Thank you” for. Sarah lost her mom, after she saw her mom dead, she changed. She helped Peter and a whole lot of strangers, and when they were going to a conference to know her story, she decided to wear a scarf, because where she is that is their tradition. Remember that you don’t need to lose something that is important in your life to change and help other

The classmate in this poem is a metaphor for society and how through puberty both sexes go through changes and become more aware of one another as well as pass judgment between both sexes, particularly more in women. The girl realizes that standards have been set for her and she needs to look a certain way to be beautiful. However, according to society she is just a girl with “ a great big nose and fat legs” and thus affecting her emotionally which has negative effects on her self-esteem and putting pressure on her emotionally ( Piercy 791).
This book was a storyline about, the betrayal of a new wife with her new husband. This was something that when I was reading I didn’t expect at all. When I started reading the first chapter I was completely sure that he had done something wrong, for the first chapter to start off “ON THE DAY THEY WERE GOING TO KILL HIM” (Chpt.1 pg.1). Angela Vicario was on of the main characters of the book, she was the new wife and Bayardo San Roman was her new husband. The book starts with suspense and it just makes readers want to keep finishing until the end.
I would recommend this book because it shows all the aspects of life and never makes you bored like other books that waste so much time describing something little and doesn’t get on with anything. This book is appropriate for teenagers and young adults as it has some inappropriate things and ideas like the rape case. This book links to my life by showing how racism is a concerning case like what’s happening now in many countries in the world not just about race but about religion and opinions. It also links to my life when I do things early and I get in trouble for that even though I’ve done something right not
She had a healthy body, she was intelligent. She had an “abundant sexual drive and possessed strong arms and back,” (2, 8-9). She was herself blind to her own positive qualities as she was too busy trying to please others with her looks, “she went to and fro apologizing,” (2, 10). She apologized to everyone for her imperfections. The imagery of, “Everyone saw a fat nose on thick legs” (2, 11), portrays the indifference society felt towards her. She wanted to be appreciated, but she was only seen her for her looks and not her inner self. She had learned from the time she was a child her imperfections made her not good enough or socially
“I’ve come to take you home –home, remember the veld? the lush green grass beneath the big oak trees the air is cool there and the sun does not burn. I have made your bed at the foot of the hill, your blankets are covered in buchu and mint, the proteas stand in yellow and white and the water in the stream chuckle sing-songs as it hobbles along over little stones.” – Diana Farrus
