When I first began to read the novel, One Wish by Leigh Brescia, I did not think I would be able to cope with how superficial and obsessive the protagonist was, nevertheless, read the whole book with a character like that. I also did not know what to expect because I have never read any books from the author Leigh Brescia, nor have I ever even heard of her, quite frankly. However, on a deadline, I forced myself to immerse myself in this book and watch the transformation of the protagonist unravel as I turned every page. I am pleased to say, I loved the transformation, albeit, it was a very arduous and lengthy one. Wrenn, designated after the songbird, is a very insecure, superficial, and misguided sixteen-year-old. Right from the start of the novel, Wrenn describes how unattractive and fat she is. She was a nobody in a sea of somebodies. I quickly became irritated to great heights with Wrenn. Not only was she very critical of herself, but she was especially, and unnecessarily critical of others. That is if they weren’t skinny, attractive, or popular. Holding true to its name, the novel clarifies Wrenn’s “one wish”; to be beautiful, thin, and popular. However, she changed her image for all the wrong reasons, and in all the wrong ways. Everything happens for a reason, and although Wrenn’s insecurity drove her to make extremely grave mistakes, it all turned around for her. And by the end of the book, Wrenn improved not only her image, in a healthy way, but she also improved her disposition. The Wrenn she became was a self-loving and happy Wrenn. I think this book is a great book because there are so many teenagers who need help learning to love themselves. And this book teaches the reader that loving yourself can be the best thing you can do for
