Within the module for Leadership and Followership, the concept that I found the most important was the Flow of Communication. While reading through this model, I visualized my squadron and the lack of communication that exists. In the first module entry I wrote, I expressed my need to better illustrate my leaders mission plans to my subordinates and peers, and vice versa. In this module entry, I want to touch more on ways to improve my squadrons lack of effective channels of communication. “Organizations lacking effective channels of upward, downward, and lateral communication limit the quality of service they can provide to their customers” (Managerial Communication p.12). The lack of a great flow of communication, can lead to turmoil
Communication is one of the most important parts of any relationship. Business relationships are no different. Having effective business communication or not having effective business communication can positively or negatively impact the success of an entire organization. Unfortunately, there are many barriers that can obstruct effective business communication. Those barriers come in four different categories. Those categories are personal barriers, physical barriers, sematic barriers and process barriers. A manager must know how to work around the communication barriers and use his or her communication skills to keep business operations going smoothly and to make improvements to the
A leader must listen to its followers and vice versa. Both Gardner and Wooden in their books provide examples that both ineffective and effective communication can affect a group or organization—for better or worse. However, through positive open communication that is produced from the group can lead to positive and effective improvement (Wooden, 2005, p.198-201; Gardner,1990, p.86) for the work environment and respectability between leader and follower.
“Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit. Many of the problems that occur in an organization are: the direct result of people failing to communicate and processes that leads to confusion and can cause good plans to fail” (Clark, 2015).
A company’s communication strategies during a time of crises play a vital role in maintaining its reputation. Failing to communicate
The most relevant piece of Reicher , Platow & Haslan (2007 ) article in relation to my leadership role as it relates to followers is " one of the gang " . As the article indicates , group behaviour is possible due to individuals having a shared social identity (person's sense of self , defined by the group ) . This group identity binds the members together and allows for meaningful group behaviour . (Reicher , et al , 2007 ) In this respect to lead the group (1)in a meaningful way , one needs to represent the group or be seen as " one of the gang " . As I reflect on the leader-follower relationship (2)in a social identity context , I know I have put importance (3)on being one of the gang . I feel that it is (4)my (5)responsibility to represent
Growing up the saying, "Be a Leader, Not a Follower was something that was imbedded in my mind. So I did just that, being a follower was considered some sort of sin in my teenage mentality. Being a leader came with feeling superior along with having a great sense of pride. Encouragement for my children to be leaders verses followers is something I find myself reminding them of often. Even though I now consider myself more of a follower I've noticed as an adult I play the role of both leader and follower depending on the situation. At my place of employment I see myself as a follower but when I have my mommy hat on I see myself more as a leader. In both cases self-confidence plays a big role with how well each position is played out. My self-confidence as a leader/mother is much higher than that of a follower/employee. Either way I strive to
The more employees a business has, the more ways communications occur, not just in terms of what methods people use but also where and how they send messages. Lines of communication can include a chain-of-command that requires employees to communicate only with their direct superior rather than bringing comments or concerns directly to leaders higher on the chart. Other lines of communication might require
Communication is the process of sending and receiving symbols with meanings attached (Schermerhorn et al., 2014). The key elements in the communication process are illustrated in the Shannon-Weaver Mathematical Model, 1949 to the right (Mortensen, 2011). Communication is a vital managerial skill to ensure goods/services are of the best standard, staff generate new ideas and adapt to change, and staff understand the organisation’s objectives and work, individually and collectively, to achieve them (Fielding, 2006).
Quote from Jerry Rice “Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t”. Leadership is not a title; it is not a trade, or some sort of hierarchy. Positive leadership is really something more. For leadership to exist, the leader has to have influence to lead oneself, and to lead others. Leadership at its core is a process of influence, meaning the influence must be transactional. The leader must affect the follower by setting goals, and the follower must affect the leader by setting goals. As the leader and the follower come together in a common understanding, and with a common sense of purpose, only then can they begin to move together to accomplish a common goal.
This essay discusses the importance of corporate communication in business operations, and various areas where communication strategy has an impact, such as marketing, quality management, technical support, public relationships, investor relationship, employee relationship, and research. Communication is especially critical in crisis management, and research shows while crisis affects customer loyalty and future sales, prompt communication and appropriate recovery actions will help customer regain confidence in the company. A study recommended that leaders should only communicate after thoroughly understanding the needs and interest of the audience.
By definition, communication is a two-way affair. Yet for effective two-way organizational communication to occur, it must begin from the bottom.
Communication: Communication plays a crucial role within any organization, and can make it successful or break it completely apart. Communication can affect almost every aspect of the business from customer relations, employee engagement and management, to product development. Employees are the focus when communicating, they are the heart of the organization as they line to patrons. When the employees feel informed and engaged, the communication exchange between them and the patrons should be stronger. (Richards, 2017)
This paper will formulate a solution to the potential communication deficit. As Lois Edmund wrote in his studies that “conflict is not static; rather, it evolves over time” (Edmund, 2010) further recommendations will be suggested in this paper to address the marketing, finance, accounting, legal and ethical issues, possible global impact and the affected organizational polices over the next two-five year period.
No matter the industry, communication plays a role unlike any other facet. It is a web, essentially, that is responsible for holding every other facet together. Whether a publicly traded company, or a small local business, having a lack of effective communication can alter the path to success tremendously.
