There were no signs of the nine year old girl despite the search by police and many community volunteers until over 3 months later, where she was discovered dead over 50 kilometres from her home on December 31, 1984. She was killed by multiple stab wounds, and police investigators believed she was also raped, supported by the physical evidence that is the discovered semen stains on her underwear. She was able to hear and speak until she became sick at eighteen months. Her family were unaware of her deafness. They found out that Heather was deaf during Christmas of 1974. Her mother happened to drop several pots and pans in the kitchen that scared the family members who heard the loud crash. But, Heather who was playing by the Christmas tree did not react at all to the loud commotion. Her mother took a spoon and a pot and banged them directly behind Heather’s back who still did not show any reaction to the noise.

Laura S. Haviland risked her own life trying to make a difference for the lives of others. She was not very concerned about what would happen to her, she just wanted to make sure others were getting what she thought they deserved. She was an abolitionist and a writer. Ashley took a long time to open up to people. Some people may think, why is it so hard for her to open up to others? All you had to do is start up a conversation. Why does she shut herself out of the real world? The reason why Ashley had such a hard time opening up to others was because she was abused. Her foster parents put it into her mind that she shouldn’t speak about what she was going through or else she would be punished. One time the Moss’s had some inspectors come by the house. She told the kids to put on a show to make it look like a great foster home, “ Surely Mrs. Moss would punish me if she thought I was ruining her little show” (Rhodes-Courter 92). Mrs. Moss chose to have the children sing, You are my Sunshine after she heard Ashley sing it to one of the younger kids to cheer her up. By doing so, she struck a chord in Ashley because that song was Ashley’s mother and her song. That song was the song that tied happiness to her relationship with her mother. That moment symbolized the loss of hope Ashley had to be taken out of the foster home. Which means Laurel also means “baby Laurel plant.” Laura is not a common name. In the last decade it has gone down in popularity. Before I was Born my dad really wanted me to be named Laura because he liked that name. At first, my mom didn’t want to name me Laura because it was not a very common name, but then she saw how much it meant to my dad and decided to me Laura. My dad got the name from a movie called Laura. This movie inspired my dad to name me Laura.
