2000-2010 Well, new century, new millennium, new type of music. The 2000’s gave us the strengthening of Latin rhythms and the return of the rap as commercial music. Genres like reggaeton, bachata or cumbia began to gain a lot of followers in Latin America. At first it seemed that it would be a passing fad, nevertheless, the fact that it became popular throughout the continent meant that more and more bands of such rhythms emerged, causing a boom in the Latin music industry. On the other hand, in the anglo-saxon world the resurgence of the rap was increasingly noticeable, also the trap music began to be heard not only by the slums, but by the population in general. Unlike the music of the 60’s, the 2000’s lyrics began to have sexual and

Like Mariachi, Ranchera is another traditional genre of music admired by the Mexican people but different in its own ways. Ranchera music is a well-known type of music from Mexico, with the name deriving from ranch lands on which the style was initially performed. Ranchera songs are categorized by intense sentiment and subjects of love dominate poetic lyrics. Sentimental ranchera singers, their voices charged with a contagious emotion, are often capable of moving to tears even their most hardened listeners. Waltz, polka and bolero inspired rhythms accompany the singer along with sudden cries of emotion that highlight the singer’s sorrowful mood. Ranchera is in fact a general label for different types of music. The genre has absorbed many specific
The Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic is little known by most Americans, but America is ever present in the Dominican consciousness. Until Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire went head to head in the legendary homerun battle of 1998, few Americans were aware of any American-Dominican rivalry in western hemispheric culture. Nothing gave Dominicans more pride than to see Sosa hold Major League Baseball's homerun record, albeit for less than 24 hours before McGuire reclaimed U.S. dominance in "America's favorite pastime." Only merengue, a tropical music and dance form, exceeds baseball in its ability to raise Dominican nationalist sentiment vis-à-vis the United States. For years, Dominican musicians and
Set on Tenerife’s southwest coast, Playa de las Americas is a lively resort area with an active nightlife. The year-round sunny weather and beautiful sandy beaches bring a predominantly British crowd looking to escape the often cold and dreary weather of home. Duty-free shops, great restaurants and the largest water park in Europe are just some of what Playa de las Americas has to offer. Thousands of revelers come from all over Europe to live it up in rowdy Verónicas, a 1km stretch of nightclubs, cabaret bars, live music venues, shops and restaurants. The party keeps going 24 hours a day with neon lights, loud music pumping from doorways and people dancing in the streets, making Verónicas a hot destination for young hedonists. Those seeking
Carlos Santana was born on July 20, 1947, in Autlan de Navarro, Mexico. Santana was born into a family of professional musicians. Santana had a solid relationship with his father Jose Santana, who was a professional violinist. Jose taught his son Carlos how to play the violin at the age of five. Jose learned lessons from his father Antonio, that he later passed on to his son Carlos Santana. According to Norman Weinstein, Contributor of “Carlos Santana/A biography” states that those lessons consist of:
What is Puerto Rican music like? Where did it develop, and around when did it develop? What makes it up? These are very valid questions for someone who does not know anything about Puerto Rican music or Latin music in general. To understand Puerto Rican music and what it means to Puerto Rican people in general, you must look at the beginning.
In 1999, rap became the top-selling music genre in the United States and in the early 2000’s brought about more white and female artists into hip-hop and rap music.
Chilean musical roots come from the mixture of indigenous traditions and Spanish influences. African customs carried by slaves brought by colonizers to the Southern Cone during the colony have also played a role in folk music, but not as much as in other Latin American countries, such as Brazil or Colombia. Some of the more well-known folk music comes from the northern region and represents the Andean traditions the Chilean, Bolivian, and Peruvian border region, the area that was part of the Incan Empire. Some of the most popular religious celebrations, such as La Tirana, are demonstrations of the complex and rich mixtures between indigenous and ancestral music, dances, and performances inherited from the Catholic tradition.
The thing I would be able to give back to the Latino community and La Unidad Latina is my support. Support can go a long way if its shower right. I will support every event or occasion occurring in the community or with that fraternity. Any type of help that I can provide that’s what will be given. When you see people that truly support what you do you tend to feel better about it. What is better then a really big outcome on an event that you planned? That’s a great feeling, you feel very successful after that. Another thing that I have to offer is my skill to market things. I feel as though I am really good with getting the word out because I know tons of people willing to come. I am also very good at making flyers with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign,

Mexican Workers’ Folk Songs from the American Southwest Over the last hundred years, Mexicans immigrating from Mexico to the United States has been a major concern for Americans. Many Mexicans came to America for employment opportunities and a chance to start a new life. By the 1920s, Mexicans made up a vast majority of workers in the agriculture, mining, and railroads in the American southwest. In the 1930’s, the Great Depression hurt Mexicans extremely.
Culture: I was interested in the definition of “Latin.” I find it interesting because of all the confusion that comes about when this subject is discussed. Many groups of individuals claim to be “Latin”, making it difficult for some culture to take sole possession of “Latin” music.
To begin addressing this assignment first I must define what art is throughout the weeks I have been enrolled in “Art and Architecture of Latin America.” To me what I have come to interpret is that art doesn’t necessarily have to involve paper, pencil or paint. Art is something that receives public reaction or that it can relate to someone. For example, take the drawings of Diego Rivera. One of his most famous works named “History of Mexico from the Conquest to the Future” can be found in Fresco, National Palace, Mexico City relates to his people's lives. Why you may ask? Well if you look closely to his drawings it shows the history of Mexico since the conquest of the Spaniards to the revolutions that emerged throughout Spaniard rule up until
I have grown up listening to Hip-Hop just as I did listening to my mother’s blaring Bachata and Merengue every Sunday morning and from what I can recall, the artists I primarily listened to were black, or Eminem. The only Spanish rappers I did listen to were Reggaeton artists, meaning I did not listen to many predominately English speaking Latino rappers. This revelation of my early musical tastes begs the question as to why I was not exposed to more Latino rappers during the late nineties and early millennium. In learning about how Latino’s have participated within the realm of Hip-Hop, one learns that allow Latino’s have played a major role in its foundations, the call for a strong identity has emerged due to various group’s
