Since the 1960’s, Lake Erie has been recovering from its unhealthy state and it’s public status. Lake Erie was terribly polluted that lead to fires and algae which was something locals were not happy about. Lake Erie’s water even got to the point of restriction. Pollutants were being dumped and phosphorus, fertilizers and pesticides were leaking into rivers that would later lead into Lake Erie. “As a result of these pollutants, Lake Erie contained increased levels of phosphorus and nitrogen, which contributed to eutrophication - a process that encourages the development of algal blooms.” (Rotman). Lake Erie was even known as the “burning river” or even the “dead lake”.
This was serious. Tons of locals could not use the water for hydration, bathing, water sports, washing clothes and pets, etc. So the Clean water Act was established. Too many pollutants including waste from sewers, phosphorus, fertilizers and pesticides were leaking into river. The Clean Water Act controls the amount of industrial dumping. Soon after that, the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement was in motion to decrease the amount of accessing pollutants. The agreement was between Canada and the United States to protect the Great Lakes. This process was a million dollar clean-up to improve monitoring water quality and the sewer system.

Which is why it was a challenge to recover. But with a great amount of clean-up effort, Lake Erie was named a hub for fishing and recreation. This was a major achievement for Lake Erie because its restoration allowed a larger amount of fish to consume. Lake Erie is that kind of back-and-forth-situation. One minute it’s healthy but then it’s not, then it’s healthy again. It started out as an environmental disaster story. But because of it’s major efforts from local and state businesses and natural policymakers, it has come back to its healthy
The Battle of Lake Champlain was an important victory because it created a dent in the British plan to invade from the North and it ultimately convinced the British to surrender the War of 1812, which caused the US to gain worldwide respect. To begin, the British had been trying to invade America from the south, but they had very little success. They then decided to try and invade from the North, using Plattsburg, a city on the shores of Lake Champlain, as their headquarters for the invasion. This is why it was so vital that the US won the Battle of Lake Champlain because it hurt the British plan to invade by destroying a major part of their plan. This also convinced them that it would be too difficult and expensive for the benefit they would

While Lake Okeechobee flushed billions of gallons of water each day to the Everglades, in order to protect parts of southern Florida from flooding. It resulted in mass quantities of dirty and polluted water being released causing harm to other parts of the state. This polluted coastal fishing grounds, scared away tourists, and threatened to wipe out coastal and Everglade animals. We can only hope that the damages that were done are not long term and we have learned to protect and preserve what is important to our economy and our ways of

The Great Lakes have been under threat for the last two centuries, but the situation is the far worse today. It use to be believed that dumping sewage or chemicals into rivers and lakes was a great way to dilute and disperse it. As it turns out, it's not a good idea since those are the very rivers and lakes that we get our drinking water from. In recent decades, a lot has been done to stop that practice, but the sources and amount of pollution keeps skyrocketing each year. This pollution in the lakes must be stop at once or else bad consequences will be appond us because of it

What if Long Lake had no fish? Would it still be the same lake? Pretty soon they won't be. Water pollution is rampant in the entire country and humans are the cause. The major contributor to water pollution in Minnesota is contaminants in runoff that make its way to pollute watersheds. Everyday water drainage or runoff that is not redirected causes pollution. Many household products with water usage such as soaps and detergents include phosphorus and also contribute to water pollution.
The most damaging occurred in 1952, a fire which caused over a million dollars in damage to boats and riverfront buildings (Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). By the 1960s, the portion of the river in Cleveland was used for industrial waste disposal, following the declaration that the lake was dead. The pollution from this waste disposal caused the surface of the river to become flammable. The most recent and most recognizable river fire occurred in the summer of 1969, capturing significant media attention at the time. The 1969 fire helped spark pollution control policy not only for the lake, in the form of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, but also nationwide as it helped lead to the Clean Water Act of 1972. Currently, the Cuyahoga River is defined as having ten beneficial use impairments, of the fourteen possible that are included in the Great Lakes Water Quality
During the 1970s the Great Lakes were polluted by many things. For example, oils, factory’s waste, mercury, and fertilizer. The Pollution in Lake Manawa is something I have came face to face with when I went Into the water. As I was swimming I felt plants in the water. I then felt my foot scoop up a plastic bottle. This is an environmental issue because this water and can kill our fish. My dad said he remembered the first time he went there he could see the fish in the water and see all the plants. Now it's foggy and polluted. If you look at the numbers of fish lake manawa has most of the fish’s information will say “population low”. This is due to the fish dying from pollution or eating something that is not supposed to be eaten. There is also not many fish species in the water which needs to be improved. I believe we also need to work on our weed control in lake
