To The Ladies: Poem Summary and Analysis

For our poetry presentation, I’ve chosen the poem To The Ladies by Lady Mary Chudleigh.
In the poem, she dictates the role which women are given when they become married. By comparing a wife to a servant, the woman is seen as a submissive creature, who is to do no more than obey to the demands of her husband. However, she is ultimately treated more as a slave, than a servant. Once she is married, she is no longer to do anything of her own volition.

The author writes this poem, as a warning to all unmarried women, that marriage may not be what it seems. A woman should not have to fall into the rut of an unhappy marriage, as many before have. Chudleigh encourages women to know their worth, with or
