The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World can be found in the middle of the New York Harbor in Manhattan, New York City, commonly known as Ellis Island. The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World is known by several different names such as “Lady Liberty”, “The Lady”, or simply “the statue.” The Statue of Liberty stands at approximately 151 feet 1 inch tall, that is measuring from the torch to the base. Lady Liberty was given to the United States as a gift from the French. She proudly stands as an icon to all visitors symbolizing American history, American opportunity, and American democracy. As the American Civil War came to a close in 1865, Edouard de Laboulaye made a proposal to create a statue to give the United States as a gift. The statue was created by a sculptor known for large scale sculptors, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Since this was a combined effort between the Americans and the French, the Americans began work on fundraising for the pedestal. The pedestal was created by the American architect Richard Morris Hunt. The statue was finally completed in 1885, but in order to transport it to New York from France the statue had to be broken down in to several pieces and put …show more content…

In 1892 the immigrant processing station opened on Ellis Island. Immigrants were passed through lines of medical and legal inspections to determine if they were fit for entry. In 1965 Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Hart-Cellar Act, this act allowed more people from third world countries to enter the U.S. and establish a separate quota for refugees. “ A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightening, and her name Mother of Exiles.”, this is the poem written by Emma Lazarus that is found on the base of the Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island was 'the door to America' which was opened on January 1st, 1892. Immigrants came here from their countries to stay in ours. It was a major immigration station for the United States from 1892 to 1943. It has been part of the Statue of Liberty since 1965. Between 1880 and 1900 9 million immigrants arrived in America, which was the largest number of arrivals in a 20 year period. The immigrants mostly stayed in the New England areas, such as New York and Massachusetts. This alarmed older Americans, because they feared that the country and system would fail because of the new 'impurities' in the land. In other words the shift in nationalities. The first immigrants to come to Ellis Island were from Ireland, Germany,

A woman stands tall in the New York Harbor. She is a beautiful copper statue. Many call her the Statue of Liberty. Others call her Lady Liberty.
In 1883, a committee came together to raise money for the largest statue in the world named Liberty Enlightening the People. The statue today is most commonly known as Lady Liberty, which stands high and mighty on an island in the New York Harbor still today. Many poets entered their poems about this magnificent statue into a contest to help donate money for the pedestal in which the Liberty would stand on. Emma Lazarus was one of the many who contributed to these funds, and was later honored to have her poem read when the statue was unveiled (Barnet et al.). In "The New Colossus" written by Lazarus, it describes the firm foundation of the statue that opens its arms wide to those around the world who are tired, poor, homeless souls that have
The idea behind it representing a new life for immigrants is the most commonly known yet there has been pivotal moments in history in which it's representation is taken into different ways to fit ones argument. At first the French gave the Statue to the US a symbol of a strong relationship between two democratic nations. Then when slaves were free the Statue of Liberty's broken shackles at the bottom represented their new opportunities when it actually was supposed to be freedom from monarchical governments. When immigrants began arriving through Ellis island it soon became a symbol of new beginnings and Liberty. When immigrants hit a new nerve with Americans, anti-immigration believers began using the Statue of Liberty as a way to restrict more migrants as they thought that these new immigrants would "tear down" the Statue of Liberty.
Many don’t know the history behind the Liberty Enlightening the World or Lady Liberty which nowadays we recognize it as the Statue of Liberty. Selective immigration is necessary for a healthy balance in the United States. On October 28, 1886, the people of France gave a gift to the United States to commemorate the lasting friendship between the two countries. The Statue of Liberty, also known as Lady Liberty, is a 151-foot statue of a woman holding a book and torch. Lady Liberty symbolizes democracy and freedom from tyranny and oppression. Standing at the entrance of the harbor, Lady Liberty welcomes arriving immigrants before reaching the United States.
The statue of liberty is a symbolic monument to all Americans, but to foreigners, she means something different. As portrayed in “The New Colossus”, the Lady Liberty gives immigrants from Europe a welcoming gesture. In the excerpt, the Statue of Liberty seems to be talking to the European countries, urging them to keep their wealthy natives, and for the people who are tired and poor to come to America. “ ”Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she/ With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,...” The Mother of Exiles, as the author, Emma Lazarus describes, paints the picture of the American dream as a place that offers endless opportunity to those willing to work hard.
I have carefully read and analyzed the experiment regarding how the regular consumption of chocolate affects the total distance covered during an all-out sprint and whether the type of chocolate consumed matters. Since the study uses a crossover design, each subject receives two different treatments (white and dark chocolate) and serves as his or her own control, which reduces the confounding variables. Dark Chocolate over Baseline: In this experiment, the null hypothesis is that the population mean differences in total distance covered (dark chocolate over baseline) is equal to 0; the alternative hypothesis is that the population mean differences in total distance covered is not equal to 0. Given the null hypothesis, a result has statistical significance when it is very unlikely to have occurred given the null hypothesis.

The New Colossus changed Americans view of the Statue of Liberty forever. Lady Liberty was a gift from France to celebrate the friendship the two countries endured during the Revolutionary War. It was not supposed to be a symbol of immigrating, but became one due to the poem, The New Colossus, by Emma Lazarus, written in 1887. The New Colossus welcomes immigrants to the U.S.A. on the base of the State of Liberty. The poem references the statue and connects it to the immigrants in America.
A stanza from “The Statue of Liberty,” represents a meaning that many people overlook. In the last stanza, the poem says, “She was built on Liberty Island, and she stands there still to this day. She represents friendship, freedom, and the American way”(Perro 8). This stanza from the poem is basically stating the whole meaning of the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty was called "Liberty Enlightening the World" and was designed to be an international symbol of liberty, justice, and democracy. It was the idea of Edouard de Laboulaye, a French liberal. He hoped that by honoring the achievements of the Americans, he would inspire the French people to create their own democracy (Borkhataria 5). In today’s society, we have many ways to
America, and Liberty have always been represented as women; The Statue of Liberty is also named “Lady Liberty.” Why America uses female figures is beyond my knowledge especially considering the views our society had/has on women. Before, women were weak, easily manipulated, and expected to tend to man’s needs. So why is one of our greatest national figures represented as a women, even before women began to fight for their freedom? It was ironic that women weren’t necessarily free but were used to represent a free nation.
There are few objects that can be compared to the significance of the figure known as the Statue of Liberty. It is one of the greatest works of its time and still stands today as a meaningful entity of independence to the world. The statue is a great tribute to the concept of global freedom that had its roots in America. It was created to display the worldwide objective of peace and tranquility. The fact that another model of this icon stands today in a world capital shows the effect that this figure has inscribed upon the world. In addition, it represents the ideas that the United States was built upon and those that the people have lived by to this very day. Its most paramount features in its role through American history are its
