I chose the passage from Act I Scene III of Romeo and Juliet where Lady Capulet is trying to convince Juliet to consider marrying Paris. In the first couplet, Lady Capulet tells Juliet that while she is examining Paris’s face, she is to “find delight writ there with beauty’s pen.” I thought of “beauty’s pen” as a makeup brush. Makeup is used to bring out beautiful features on someone’s face, and a makeup brush is used to do so. In the fourth couplet, Lady Capulet compares Paris to a “precious book of love.” This line reminded me of one of my favorite books, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The Fault in Our Stars follows the beautiful love story of two cancer-stricken teenagers and is very important to me, so I chose it to symbolize
This quote demonstrates the book’s theme of perseverance because of its powerful motivation to overcome the pain and give it your all.
In The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, there is a main issue of whether Prospero or Caliban have the better claim to control the island. In act 1, scene 2, we learn that Prospero, Miranda (his daughter), and Caliban are all located on an island. Caliban states, “This island’s mine by Sycorax my mother, (1.2.331), which means that he has inherited this island from his mother. However, critic Stephen Orgel has argued that “Power, as Prospero presents it in the play, is not inherited but self-created. . . . it derives from heaven” (208). On the other hand, critic Peter Hulme argues that Prospero’s only response to Caliban’s claim to the island is to call him a liar. This brings us to question who actually has the better claim to the island.
Young lovers defy their families’ long-established vendetta and jeopardize all they have to continue their relationship. The violent commotion between the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet, finally bring peace to their feuding families, with their own death. Like with many suicide cases, there are challenges and decisions being made that lead up to this decision. Often times, we question who contributed to the suicide. Regardless, others argue that Romeo and Juliet should be held accountable for their ultimate decision. Then again, there is no definite reason to assign fault to Romeo and Juliet. Not only are their brains not fully developed, but pressures from outside forces caused such stress within the relationship.
Almost everyone will go through a breakup. Those who have been through a rough breakup may agree that heartache hurts. Individuals handle breakups in many different ways; some might become depressed, stop eating, or even overeat. In Aaliyah’s “I Don’t Wanna” and FeFe Dobson’s “Can’t Breath”, each artist expresses their emotional response to handling a breakup. Each are fighting to hold on to the relationship and not wanting to believe that the relationship is actually over.
True love is selfless. It is prepared to sacrifice. This is the dominant theme in Shakespeare 's The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet, a play is about two rival noble families from Verona, the Capulets and Montagues. Indeed, the two families have such an ongoing hatred for each other that they are constantly feuding violently without end. Having had enough, Prince Escalus, the Prince of Verona, one day decrees the penalty of death to be upon the person who disrupts the peace again. It is against this vicious backdrop that Shakespeare by contrast, accentuates love in Romeo and Juliet. Three different types of love are depicted: the infatuation of Romeo, the son and heir of Montague, with a woman named Rosaline; the arranged love between Juliet, the daughter of Capulet, and Paris, a kinsman of Prince Escalus, whom Juliet’s parents have chosen to be her suitor; and ultimately, the true love between Romeo and Juliet, whose families are each other’s worst and greatest enemies.
In Romeo and Juliet, love is depicted in several ways. Both Luhrman and Shakespeare represent love in different ways in different contexts to both the Elizabethan era and the contemporary audience. Both the original and later manifestations of the text are valued because they both communicate to the audience on the values of love and society by employing a variety of devices.
"...Go pronounce his present death,/ And with his former title greet Macbeth." (Act 1, Scene 2, 64-65) Though the word "death" in this sentence refers to the former thane of Cawdor's demise, Shakespeare uses the clever trick of foreshadowing Macbeth's downfall by coupling the word "death" with the word "Macbeth" so early in the tragedy. The quote has another importance it introduces the ideas of treachery and personal gain from less-than-legitimate means, two characteristics Macbeth picks up on as the story advances. We are introduced to Macbeth as a hero, a slayer of the Norweyans, even "Bellona's bridegroom, lapped in proof" (Act 1, Scene 2, 54), but by the end of the play
The nurse and Juliet have a very closely bonded relationship. The nurse lost her only child Susan and replaces her feelings of loss for the passing of her only child with love for Juliet. ‘I bade her some. What, lamb! What ladybird! God forbid, where’s this girl? What, Juliet!’ the use of terms of affection show the nurses enthusiasm and eagerness towards Juliet. The nurse uses frequent anecdotes of her and Juliet, ‘tis since the earthquake now aleven years, and she was weaned – I shall never forget it’ she shows her love through a specific memory. ‘For then she could stand high-lone; nay, by th’rood, she could have run and waddled all about’ this is showing that the nurse remembers Juliet’s first steps, a milestone in Juliet’s childhood.
To aide in this paper, I have chosen the song “We didn’t start the Fire,” by Billy Joel to help provide modern events that William Shakespeare’s works can relate to. Shakespeare’s plethora of works provide information about his thoughts on society during his life. Many events and topics that are seen in modern culture are relatable to events that occurred during Shakespeare’s life, such as government, assassinations, and controversies. Shakespeare’s characters from his many plays reflect his thoughts and provide an instant ability to connect modern culture back through Shakespeare’s writing.
Kinetics of reactions, otherwise known as chemical kinetics, is the study of how particles and bonds between particles change in a chemical reaction over time. These changes can be viewed at a molecular level through the use of reaction rates. Reactions rates tell us how fast or how slow the change is happening at this level, or how the reaction depends on the time.
A play is a form of literature that is created by a playwright which is usually intended for theatrical performances rather than just reading. Plays are amazing pieces of literature that have language riddles that make the reader think. Shakespeare’s plays are more than just artistic literature, they consist of these constant riddles. His plays make his readers constantly guess and think; making them decipher the deeper meaning behind his elaborate use of words. Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest consists of a deeper meaning throughout the play to which he incorporates a deep-seated lesson at the end of the story. His use of words grab the reader’s attention and makes them reenact the play in their own imagination with incredible force. Shakespeare’s immense impact in literature allow for his plays to still be venerated and recreated around the world today. Director Julie Taymor recreated Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest and showed her own interpretation of the play by making it into a movie. Her interpretation was definitely interesting, but was not the most accurate portrayal of the play with the choosing of actors and the use of modern technology.

The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, which represents love and sacrifice, is one of the most famous plays ever written by Shakespeare. The play was written in 1595 and published in 1597. Romeo and Juliet is a sad love story with feuding families, the Capulets and the Montagues. The play takes place in Verona, Italy. It contains the heart-breaking story of the stars-crossed lovers as they fall in love instantly. Friar Lawrence is the priest who married the couple. He marries them in hopes that the two families will reconcile. Friar Lawrence develops the plan to give Juliet a potion which will make her seem dead, since Juliet did not want to marry Paris, who was the person that Juliet 's father wanted her to marry. Friar Lawrence would then send a letter to Romeo about Juliet 's fake death. Friar Lawrence is a notable character because he marries Romeo and Juliet, gives Juliet the potion, and does not get the letter to Romeo himself. Romeo and Juliet would still have been alive if he hadn’t done these actions.
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is widely considered the best tragedy ever written. The love story is the epitome of a tragedy under Aristotle’s definition. Aristotle defines a tragedy as a story using poetic elements to tell of a noble hero and his downfall. This essay will explore how each element of tragedy is utilized in Romeo and Juliet and how Shakespeare wrote the perfect tragedy.
A tragic flaw is a deficiency in a person that brings them sorrow and misery. A high percentage of individuals have some type of tragic flaw that earns them misery, wether it be a relatively small issue like being a tad lazy, or something bigger like showing open contempt for others. Both these flaws are a detriment to individuals and will hinder them in their lives. In the play, Hamlet there are a number of characters that have tragic flaws, including Gertrude and her inability to be loyal and Polonius and his meddling in affairs of others. The character with a tragic flaw that is portrayed most vividly by William Shakespeare is Hamlet. Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his tendency to overthink scenarios and decisions, while procrastinating any real action, which leads in part to his eventual murder.
