The Knights Templar Although the Knights Templar eventually became one of the most powerful organizations in Medieval Europe, it came from humble beginnings where its first Grand Master had to share a horse with another founder. The Knights Templar, a military order devoted to protecting the Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land, was one shrouded by power and mystery. Originally known as the Poor Knights of the Temple of King Solomon, it was initially a group dedicated to the protection of Christians traveling into the Holy Lands after Jerusalem was captured by the Christians. A French knight named Hugues de Payens was the founder of the Knights Templar order in 1118 A.D, but it was not until the order received the endorsement of the Pope …show more content…
At the height of their power, the Templars had established substantial financial networks and acquired large amounts of land across all of Europe and the Middle East, built a plethora of stone cathedrals and castles, had their own personal fleet of ships, and even managed to own the entire island of Cyprus, which served as the Templar headquarters. A case can be made that the power the Templars acquired actually led to their downfall. As the tide began to turn in the Crusades, so did the tide begin to turn on the Templar Order. On Friday October 13th, 1307, King Philip IV ordered the arrest of Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay, in addition to many other French Templars. The reasons behind the arrest were that Templars were participating in sacrilegious acts in addition to financial corruption, fraud, and secrecy. These prisoners were then tortured until they confessed under duress leading to a scandal that rippled throughout Paris. Soon after in November of 1307, Pope Clement instructed all Christian Monarchs to arrest and seize all Templar assets. The Templar Order was soon after disbanded and its leader, de Molay, burned at the

This just in! Christian pilgrims were attacked by Seljuk Turks on their way to the holy land. This was the first of many attacks on the pilgrims because of the recent change of control of the Holy land. They also have attacked some Byzantines and closed off the pilgrimage routes.
The journal article written by William Urban provided a different perspective in role played by the Teutonic Knights during the crusades. Within historical analysis, the Teutonic Knights are often reputed as being brutal during their participation in the holy wars. However, Urban’s article does not dwell on the brutality of the Knights.
The Knights Templar was a religious and military order established during the times of the crusades. Their original mission was to protect pilgrims on their trips to holy lands and to take back the lands for Christianity. But during the 12th century the order received a greater military responsibility. Along with more military power they also became much wealthier than before which provoked other orders and so they became jealous.

One example would be Philip IV (Philip IV), who owed them money and could very well have owed them his life because of the knights protection during the Paris riots. The knights had lost some of their luster and public support due to battles lost during the Holy Wars. People were beginning to think that the knights held too much power and sought to control the group or even disband them. Philip IV was one such person as jealousy seemed to be his motive, along with not having to pay back a great financial debt owed that he owned to the Templar’s. He wanted to control the knights and had dreams of becoming the Grand Master. A dream that never came to fruition. Philip would use his power as king of France to issue an order that on Friday the 13th of October 1307 the knights were to be arrested. This is the reason that Friday the 13th is seen as day of bad luck and ill fortune even to this day. He would do this as a way to control the knights and take their influence from them by sullying their reputation, and also to gain access to their wealth with the added intent to make sure they were never a
The Templars’ reputation as a military order does not seem to be at the same level as its reputation as bankers. The network that had been built originally for the safe passage of pilgrims was being used to line their pockets by using it to transfer money for clients as powerful as kings and as small as merchants. They did things like arrange and pay ransoms, collected and stored taxes, and even offered a safe-deposit service. They already had ways of making money, but they still kept all the warp spoils they could get their hands on and now are getting into banking which will earn them even more money and increase their power and reputation; in fact the banking, according to Dr. Evelyn Lord, “increased their international reputation for book-keeping
To be a knight means that you have been assigned by a king or any other political, or religious leader, in our case the most high king, our lord Jesus Christ, to do a service. Our king, Jesus Christ, has called us, the knights of the Kingdom, to, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19).” This is our mission as Christians, no matter what denomination you are, you have been called by God to spread the gospel.
The Crusades consisted of pilgrimages and Holy Wars which, were two very important movements. The Crusades lasted from 1096 until the 20th Century and were a very important part of European history. The pilgrimages which started before the first crusade, were a tradition of trips to the Holy Land. The people on the pilgrimages would travel long distances to go here in order to visit sacred shrines, where they would find assistance or a cure for something. The other part of the crusades was the Holy Wars.
As their membership and wealth continued to increase, so did their greed and tyranny. The days of protecting pilgrims had long since ended along with the ties to the Catholic Church's teachings and practices. They denied God and committed acts such as urinating on the symbol of the holy cross. The Templars were in touch with mystics and sorcerers belonging to various religions as well as the belief that Satan was the lord of our world. The pope at the time, Pope Clement V, had grown tired of the Templars and at the Council of Vienne in 1312, gave the orders to destroy the organization. The Templars were imprisoned, tortured and killed. By the early 14th century, the organization was for the most part eradicated (The Dark History of the Templars). However, in the late 1700's, stories of Templars doing heroic deeds in Scotland began to emerge. It is believed that these stories were from Scottish Freemasons who tried to make their society’s history more diverse (HowStuffWorks, Stephanie
The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici), also known as the Order of Solomon's Temple (French: Ordre du Temple or Templiers), the Knights Templar or simply as Templars, was a Catholic military order recognised in 1139 by papal bull Omne Datum Optimum of the Holy See.[4] The order was founded in 1119 and active from about 1129 to 1312.[5]
The renaissance was period of rebirth in Europe in the 14th to 17th century that began to change the views of philosophy, politics, and arts. This was a significant change that was spread throughout Europe and shaped everyone’s views. The Renaissance was a movement of cultural revival which sought to rediscover and redeploy the languages, learning and artistic achievements of the classical world. It used to be claimed as the 'dawn of modernity '. The idea of the Renaissance as an age of gold after an age of darkness was actually a tale spun by the humanists themselves, and makes the important point that this was a very self-conscious movement, which shaped its own reputation. So they set off in 1096 to the holy land, unfortunately for them this would not be the first or the last Crusade. This first Crusade was pointless because the Arab Muslims were not against letting Christians visit the site of Jesus’ burial or make other trips within the holy city of Jerusalem. As mentioned before, all kinds of people from nobles to peasants wanted to go fight in Jerusalem, so much so that the church offered to look after people's property while they were off fighting and they would be pardoned from any sins that they committed once they had gone the distance. Before the main line of Christians got to Jerusalem a group of farmers and peasants had assembled a “People’s Crusade” led by a 60 year old man that went by the name Peter the Hermit. Their little experience of the Middle East had them believing that the Turks would turn tail at the sight of their massive numbers.
As a new era called The Middle Ages emerged from the fall of the Roman Empire, the Catholic Church rose to a dominant religious and political power. The Roman Empire became a religious empire in the early Middle Ages, then later developed into the Holy Roman Empire when Charlemagne was crowned by Pope Leo III and became the first emperor to serve under papal authority.
