Did you know that the Samurai practiced self-discipline, self sacrifice, obedience, skill, honor, and bravery. The Samurai were Japanese that lived in Japan and the Knights were European warriors that lived in Europe. They both lived more than a thousand years ago. Critics would say that the Samurai and Knights have more similarities, however they had way more differences. The Samurai and Knights had many differences throughout their lives. Military training was a big difference between both groups of warriors. Another big difference was the warfare they both wore. First, military training caused many differences between Samurai and Knights. According to Document C, in “ Japan memoirs of a secret Empire” and “Warrior Challenge” it states, “At about age 14 the trainees officially became Samurai”... “ he would usually become a Knight at around age 21.” Based on this information the young Samurai and Knights both have different ages of completion. The Knights became official at age 21. Unlike the Knights, the Samurai …show more content…
Based on Document D, of “Armor Of Medieval Warriors” it states, “ Samurai did not wear armor on their right arm so that they could easily draw their bow.” The Samurai did not wear the same armor as the Knights because the Samurai only wore armor on one arm. The Knights wore the same armor as all the other fighters. The Samurai were smart because they made fighting more comfortable and easier for them. the Knights were still good fighters, it was just that when the Samurai drew their bow it was more easier. According to, “Dress like a Knight” it says, “ an oldie, but a goodie. Half spear, half axe, all dangerous.” This explains what the Knights armor looked and felt like. The description is about the pike pole, which is a weapon that the Knights used. the Samurai had techniques in there fighting. Although, the Knights just had good weapons to fight
Samurai and Knights are warriors fighting and serving for their lord. Samurai and knights are both trained, physically and mentally to fight for their lords, however while in a battle, strategies of both make it hard to distinguish who would win. While both warriors are very similar in many ways, Samurais differences such as their, training, weapons, and armor give them big advantages.
There are many similarities between the Samurai of medieval Japan and the Knights of medieval Europe, especially considering their training, armor, and codes. For example document A and B discuss the Training about the knights and armor. The first similarity is that they both started their training when they were young and also, they were spiritual. A couple of the Samurais differences is that they wrote poetry secretly and, “became Samurai in a ceremony called genpuku live according to Bushido.”The Knights differences in is that, “pages become squire at age 14 and, Squires become knights at age 21.” Another similarity in document C and D is their Armor Their armor was real heavy and they both wore helmets. Although, Samurai used iron and knights
"They started their training in their childhood." Girls also received some martial arts training."While knights don’t become knights until they are 21."… knight's training began at age 4 or 5." This reveals that although knights and samurai started their training at a young age, them becoming actual warriors were at different ages. Also, women seemed weak and useless in Europe, so only knights received training. Knights became squires at 14 and if they became approved they became real knights. Samurai went straight from training to samurai. To add on, Samurai and knights were distinct because of their armor. Document 3 shows that "Samurai did not wear armor on their right arm so they could easily draw their bow." While for knights the entire body was covered with the armor. This is important because the samurai used multiple weapons, unlike the knights. But the samurai had a disadvantage because they had less armor and protection. " As weapons grew… knights began to wear suits of plate armor." Furthermore, samurai and knights were diverse because they had different religious beliefs about death. Document 5 reveals that samurai believed in Zen Buddhism. Their belief
Samurais promotion at age 14 is becoming a true samurai. Knights promote to a squire. They must be promoted by their master to become a true knight around the age of 22. Knights and Samurais also have similar armor. Both were altered for the invention
Samurais and Knights are very similar, yet they can be very different along the lines of training, armor and weapons, and code/law. They both start training at a very young age in childhood. According to Document A, “training of samurai began in childhood,” and according to Document B, “knight’s training began at age four or five.” During training they learned certain skills with swords, but practiced with sticks. Later at age 14, both warriors promoted up a rank.
Regardless of their slight difference of appearance in time, the samurai and knights had similar composure. Beginning training during early childhood, both the samurai and knight reached full potential fairly quick(Doc. C). As education, both received training in religion(Doc C). Gradually with age, both
The similarities between samurais and knights were greater than the differences due to the similarity in the hierarchy and the armor they used to protect themselves. The Samurai were “warriors who owed loyalty and military service to daimyos for land or regular payment.” They made up about 10% of Japan’s population. Similarly, knights were “warriors who owed loyalty and military service to the lord for land.” (Document A) There were about 12,000 knights in England and Normandy, France in the 12th century. Even though Japan and Europe had no communication or access to each other, both areas placed the warrior classes in the middle of the hierarchy and owed loyalty/military services. This shows that the social order of both Feudal Japan and Feudal
Did you know that samurais and knights are almost the same? The warriors of Japan are called samurais, and the fighters from Europe are called knights. Samurais and knights were more similar because of their honor, armor and training, and social position. Firstly, Samurai and Knights were more similar because they both had honor.
Two similarities between the samurai and knights are that their training both began at a young age and were experienced in poetry. As stated in the Document C PBS Excerpt Boxes, “The rigorous training (of samurai)… began in childhood… [A] prospective knight’s training [began at age four or five] with learning to ride a pony.” While young children in contemporary times learn how to ride bikes and how to say please and thank you, in the feudal epoch, children were educated on combat. Considering the dangers of living in such a time, it’s justified why the way of the warrior was taught as soon as possible.
This was shown in document D, written by Terry Bennett that tells the reader,”Samurai did not wear armor on their right arm so they could easily draw their bow.” This means if a samurai had armor on their aim would be horrible and would effect their actions on the battle field. It also says in document D written by Terry Bennett stating, “In samurai armor, small iron scales were tied together, lacquered, and then bound into armor.” This means that the armor of a samurai was strong and well thought
You are a child at the age of 17 being trained by your master. He has taught you many things. Soon you will become a samurai. How do you feel about becoming part of the Japanese army? The time of the knights and the samurai took place at the same time. These people served for their country to help provide protection from enemy armies. They both developed feudalism to keep the land in order. The three ways that the knights and the samurai are more different than the same are: Their code of honor, their type of armor, and their training.
The first reason why the differences are greater than the similarities is because of the social order in feudal Japan and Europe. ”Historians and other scholars use social pyramids to show how societies were structured” (Document A). The samurai owned loyalty and military service to daimyo 's for land or regular payment while on the other hand knights owned loyalty and military service to the lords. Another difference about samurais and knights was the population. Samurai with families took about 10% of Japan 's population and in Europe, there was estimated 12,000 knights in England and Normany France in the 12th century. One more difference is that there are four people above the knight in the social order but only three for samurai.
From researching about knights and samurai, I believe that in a battle between a knight and samurai, the knight would have a greater chance in winning. This is because knights focused more on fighting techniques and how to improve them, rather than focusing on spiritual beliefs and traditions as well, which is what the samurai did. The knights also had very strong and good armour which helped a lot in battles, while the samurai’s armour changed a lot but wasn’t ever as effective as the knight’s armour. The knight’s weapons were also more advanced and better then the samurai weapons.
Samurai and knights are not identical, they do have a good amount of differences. For instance, after going through training, samurai were awarded their title and responsibilities at the age of fourteen while knights took on their full responsibilities at twenty-one. Document B points out that although loyalty was important to both Japanese and European warriors, “loyalty towards the feudal lord in Japan was hereditary” but it was not in Europe. This means that in Japan “service of a feudal lord went from father to son” so the relationship between the lord and his warrior lasted for generations. Along with that, although both groups wore full body armor, Document D states that “a knight’s armor could weigh forty
In school, they learned of the Kendo, which is fencing with bamboo sticks, the moral code of the samurai, and their religion, Zen Buddhism. Their code of conduct, the Bushido, demanded that a samurai must hold his loyalty, courage, honesty, compassion, and honor. According to The Way of the Samurai by Yamaga Soko, “Within his [samurai] heart he keeps to the ways of peace, but without he keeps his weapons ready for use.” As stated before, samurais have a much lighter armor. This is mainly due to They have an opening on their right arm in order for them to draw their bows faster and
