Introduction Teenage girls are constantly looking for someone to be their role model. They look in various places to find the person that they think will be the best role model. There are several things that teenage girls will look at when they are looking for someone who is going to be a role model. They will look for a person who has a good sense of style, some who has a pleasing appearance, and someone who they can find out a lot about. One person who seems to fit these items is Kim Kardashian. Teenage girls look up to Kim Kardashian in the way that she dresses, the way that she applies makeup, and the way that she behaves. They think that she is stylish, is a makeup genius, and is a great behavioral role model. They are able to know a …show more content…
While is it true that teenage girls do need a role model to help them shape their lives, that statement must be expanded upon. Teenage girls must have multiple role models so that they will be shaped by different personalities, styles, and behaviors that will help them to be shaped into the women that they will become. When a teenage girl looks only to Kim Kardashian as a person who has a good sense of style, a good personality, and a good style of behavior as their role model they will become just like Kim Kardashian and in so doing they will never discover other styles or behaviors that they might like better than the ones that Kim Kardashian did not have. For example, throughout American society many teenage girls are infatuated with having “the perfect body”. So they pick one person that they exactly want to look like and try to develop their body by dieting, plastic surgery, and makeup to become exactly like that one person. Then all they have to say for themselves is that they look like that one person. If all we have are copies of that one person then we won’t have any diversity in American society. The reason that it is important to state that Kim Kardashian is not a good role model is because it is important for teenage girls to understand that without multiple role models they run the risk of being exactly like Kim Kardashian and not having anything different from
Victoria Kennedy was born into a well known political family. She grew up making very honorable A’s. Before college, she went to a private school, but later attended school at Tulane, University for law. After college, she moved to Chicago for her work as a clerk. Victoria marries Grier Raclin, they moved to Washington D.C. and had two children; but after 9 years of marriage they divorced. In July of 1992 she married Ted Kennedy. They were one of Washington D.C.’s best known couples. A year after her husband diagnosed with a brain tumor he died of brain cancer. She was later suggested to run for Ted Kennedy’s former seat in congress; but she was not interested.
Kim and her sisters are quoted talking about their “natural” bodies, which aren’t so natural, which in turn makes young girls feel as if their bodies should look like that of the Kardashian sisters. The reason the effect of the Kardashian body image is so detrimental is because with a large percentage of their viewers being teens, it makes them particularly vulnerable to being negatively affected by the images they see on TV. Teens frequently judge themselves by the body types that they see in the media. “Teens are also arguably the most susceptible group to body image disturbances and eating disorders in the U.S.” (Flynn 2). Studies have show that unrealistic body ideas, like those of the Kardashian family, have been proven to lead young girls and teens to develop major body dissatisfaction, low-self esteem and eating
Firstly, most girls desire beauty and the use of cosmetics. They constantly ask for an opinion on what looks best or if their make-up looks decent. This is because they watch actresses also asking for opinions instead of deciding on their own. It causes teens to be more dependent on other views and eventually, they won't be able to do their make-up or hair without someone telling them how to do it. Consequently, teenagers become so dependent on other stand points, they won't be able to make adequate decisions in adulthood.
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), is a condition characterized by pervasive worry. It takes the form of undue distress about a variety of everyday things beyond the scope of more specific anxieties and phobias (Goldberg, 2017). Anxious adult hoarder is someone who can live in an unhealthy and dangerous environment, collecting stuffs that aren’t valuable or important, and living with broken appliances instead of getting them fixed (Mayoclinic, 2017). General anxiety disorder in a pediatric patient and anxiety associated with an adult hoarder are different in many ways such as hoarding, adult hoarders would rather cope with malfunctioning systems instead of being in a safe environment like everyone else and continue to collect and keeping everything
Who a young preteen girl decides to be her role model will play a major part in the type of person she becomes. In today’s society, there is a wide variety of role models a young woman could look up to. There is someone like Miley Cyrus, who inspires people to be themselves, but also encourages provocative behavior, or there is someone like Taylor Swift, who gives millions away to charity and is always putting her fans first. A young girl will work hard to emulate the behavior and success of their role model and that can be a good or bad thing depending on who their role model has been. The perfect example of an ideal role model for young women to look up to is Nancy Drew. The first Nancy Drew book was published in 1930 and she was one of the
As the debate over gun control continues to spread throughout the nation like the plague, everyone is trying to choose a side. Some argue that their Second Amendment Rights are being infringed on, however, when looked at in detail that is not the case. Many others argue the decrease of guns is not beneficial because criminals are okay with doing illegal things, therefore they will obtain guns anyway. There is much, however, to disprove that. These weapons are the reason why the United States has such a high rate of violence even with such high wealth. The cost of gun violence has continued to rise over the years in medical bills. Criminals should not have the access they are currently have to such destructive weapons. Gun control must be put in place in order to decrease much of the violence and suicides the United States has.
It seems that younger females are more apt to believe that most everything they see in the media is realistic and attainable, and they try to mimic what they see on TV or read in magazines. They also tend to watch TV shows like One Tree Hill, Laguna Beach, and Gilmore Girls. Why do our young females look to these fictional characters for real life answers? Do they see these characters as role models? One has to wonder if they believe that if they mimic how these characters look and act they will belong and then they, too, can have the same outcome the characters do. How many times have you walked down the street and seen an 8- or 9-year-old girl wearing something that might be more appropriate if worn by an adult? Females between the ages of 9-12 read fashion and beauty magazines, and their exposure to these "ideal" images coincides with a period in their lives where self-regard and self-efficacy is in decline. This is the same time period where body image is tied to self-esteem and it becomes quite fragile due to physical changes of puberty. This is also the same time frame where the tendency for social comparison is at its peak. Girls thus find themselves in a subculture of dieting, due to the messages given by the media.
One may say that a neat person cleans every second of the day while a sloppy person doesn't clean up after themselves but in the article we will differentiate between the two. In the essay Neat People vs. Sloppy People, by Dave Barry he has his own opinion on the two. In the essay he says “ Neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people”, I agree with that because I am a very neat person but I am not lazy. I like my room to be cleaned a certain way and the bathroom, cleaned the certain way because if it isn't cleaned the way I clean it will make me feel like it wasn't cleaned to its full potential.
These people make their posts and pages appealing to today's youth to catch their attention. Photos of Victoria secret models with their perfect bodies help promote their new lines of clothing and bathing suits and those models have perfect clear skin and skinny bodies. Millionaire women post their Louis Vuitton bags and freshly manicured nails. These photos become the normal for teens to see on their feed. These photos of desirable lives and desirable appearances flood social media for teens to compare themselves to. Even though women like Kylie Jenner don't mean to make others look down upon themselves or compare their lives to hers. It's impossible to not compare your life to
Most people would say that in order to be considered a good role model, you first need to be considered a good person. A good person is typically a person who has empathy for others, tries their best to make good decisions, and follows the law. After reading this description, of what a good person is, celebrities would not typically be the first group of people that would pop into your head because of their bad reputations, but that doesn't mean that all public figures are known for their bad choices. Celebrities should be famous for their talents and skills in some sort of field, or they could just have a great life story and have done great things in their life which inspired people to do the same. After all, everyday people run red lights all the time and no one would ever know, but the moment a celebrity gets one traffic ticket, it will be instantly posted all over every single magazine and news station. Public figures should be considered role models because, many public figures can serve as inspiration to do great things and a great example of what can happen if you make bad decisions.
Do celebrities make bad role models? I believe they do. Kids see celebrities in the news everyday and mimic what they do, thinking that they should be like them. But that is wrong. Most celebrities don’t know what they are doing in their life because they have a hard time telling reality from fantasy. They are like you and me, but people think that they are more than that. Most magazines and movies have pictures/videos of airbrushed celebrities and when teenager look at these they start believing that looking like how celebrities do is the only way to be popular and loved.
If you don't know who Kylie Jenner is, then you're probably spending so much time in the university library that you got disconnected to the outside world or you're potentially a television hater and never bothered knowing what's going on. Kylie Jenner is literally everywhere, from television advertisements to your must-watch reality shows, to fashion posters plastered on your dreamt boutique to that humongous billboard greeting you on the subway. She is one of the most loved models of this generation, and she sets fashion trends that we never disregard, or put forth some fashion inspirations that we mimic so avidly that we thought it should give us the creeps. Kylie Jenner is a true-blue testament that if one influences other to feel good about themselves, then it's easier for success to be reached.
One of the most popular teenage entertainers ever is warping the minds of our youth. Appearing on television commercials, MTV videos, many magazine covers, and the radio, Britney Spears is taking control of raising today’s children. Her perfect looks and sexual appeal have mesmerized young viewers. Children and teens strive to be just like her. Although some people allow their children to idolize Britney Spears, I now see that she is an inappropriate role model for her targeted audience of five to thirteen-year-olds.
Role models in the media are also essential for young people. These are idols, actors, athletes, authors, politicians, revolutionaries or any other person who is known because of their fame. Media role models have a high influence over young people because they are often placed on a pedestal, and worshipped like gods. It is important for youth to be wary of negative media role models because they may glamorize truly wrong values. An example of this is seen if we look at Paris Hilton. She lives a fascinating and alluring lifestyle, yet was convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol. Because of her, many other young girls may believe that drinking and driving is okay, or even cool. Role models in the media are important because of the widespread effect they have on youth all over the world.
Nasra Bishumba interviewed singer Miley Cyrus and this is what Miley had to say, “My job isn’t to tell your kids how to act or how not to act because I’m still figuring that out for myself. To take that away from me is a bit selfish.” I agree with her because most of the celebrities our kids look up to are still kids their self, growing up and learning from their own mistakes. So how are we going to let our kids look up to other kids? Then of course there are others who see celebrities as good role models like Kristine Tucker. She stated, ‘’Celebrities who complete college coursework, have an interest in politics, write books, study literature, travel abroad or engage in debates showcase their intellectual skills.’’ Majority of the stars today’s youth look up to didn’t even finish school. They have their mangers write out statements to say in an interview to sound well educated or have others talk for them. This is not how we want our kids to learn. We don’t want them to speak the minds of others to sound well educated. We want for our kids to have a mind of their own, be-able
